He holds a degree in Biological Sciences from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1977), a master's degree in Geography from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1982), and a doctorate in Geography from the Fluminense Federal University (2005). He is a Full Professor in the Department of Geography at the Fluminense Federal University, where he has been working since 1978. He has experience in the areas of General Ecology and Geography, mainly focusing on the following subjects: conservation units, public use in conservation units, environmental impacts, socio-environmental conflicts, and environmental education.
