  • Machine learning-based detection and classification of leaf diseases in rooftop gardens

Journal of Integrated Science and Technology, 2026
Plants are essential to life on Earth, and the diversity of plant species continues to expand. Accurate plant species identification is critical for a wide range of individuals, including foresters, farmers, environmentalists, educators, and urban gardeners. This is especially important in rooftop gardening where the choice of species and space utilization is the most important. Non-expert identification may however be difficult and time-consuming in traditional plant identification because it may need a thorough knowledge of botanical features. This is of particular concern to the urban gardeners who lack formal training in botany. The recent developments in machine learning and computer vision provide promising solutions to the automation of plant species identification to improve the availability of urban agriculture and improve decision-making. Even with these advances, it is problematic to create an all-encompassing system that will be able to detect a sufficiently wide range of plant species. In this research, we suggest a plant species recognition system based on deep learning technology. The framework comprises of four steps; image acquisition, preprocessing, feature extraction and classification. The model was trained on a dataset of 80,000 images of 14 plant species, transfer learning on a ResNet9 architecture, pre-trained on 64,000 images and tested on 16,000. Our model scores around 92 out of the 100 and it can be further optimized to score higher. This piece of work is meant to guide people in the selection and management of plants with specific reference to rooftop gardening and urban agriculture.

DC and AC electrical characteristics of vanadyl phthalocyanine thin films were arranged in an ITO/MoO3/VOPc/MoO3/Al sandwiched structure. By changing the thickness of the VOPc film within the range of 50–400 nm, the electrical properties of the fabricated diode device were examined at different temperatures. Analysis of real and imaginary components revealed insights into the resistance of the film and provided valuable information on the relaxation time. Notably, Cole‒Cole plots demonstrated a correlation between film thickness and enhanced mobility, indicating an increase in film mobility with increasing thickness. This study determined the primary electrical conduction mechanism as a space charge-limited current with an exponential trap distribution. There was a remarkable increase in hole mobility, increasing from 8.25×10-9 cm2V-1s-1 to 1.32×10-6 cm2V-1s-1, corresponding to variations in the VOPc film thickness from 50 nm to 400 nm. Hole mobility was found to increase with increasing temperature, which was attributed to the increased injection of thermally generated charge carriers, along with a reduction in the barrier height.
  • Experimental Study on Tribological, Rheological and Bio-degradability Characteristics of Canola Oil with TiO2 Nanoparticles as Bio-nanolubricants

    Tribology in Industry, 2024
In response to growing environmental concerns about the adverse effects of conventional lubricants, there has been a surge in the demand for eco-friendly alternatives. Biodegradable lubricants, crafted from renewable sources, represent a sustainable solution to address these environmental apprehensions. This research describes the tribological, rheological properties and biodegradability of rapeseed oil with 0.25 to 1.25 weight percent TiO2 nanoparticles as additives. The lubricant samples were prepared using a magnetic stirrer and an ultrasonic device. Friction and wear properties such as coefficient of friction and wear scar diameter were determined using a four-ball tester. In comparison with SAE20W40, samples 1 (0.25 weight percentage of TiO2) and sample 2 (0.5 weight percentage of TiO2) shown remarkably improved tribological performance, with 73.32% and 66.76% decreases in coefficient of friction (COF), respectively. Shear stress, shear rate and dynamic viscosity are analyzed using a rheometer. The acquired results are juxtaposed with both pure canola oil and various mineral oils for comparison. The nano-lubricant synthesized in this study emerges as a viable alternative to SAE10, DXT3 (steering fluid), and SAE20W50 grade oils, demonstrating lower friction and a reduced wear scar diameter. Biodegradability tests were performed on all generated samples using the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) apparatus, and all samples exhibited a BOD to Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) ratio better than 0.5, indicating biocompatibility. The findings of the research investigation indicate that the combination of canola oil with TiO2 blends holds significant promise as an alternative to conventional synthetic lubricant oils.
  • Synthesis and Characterisation of Triazole, Pyrimidyl, Fluoroaniline, and Nitrobenzamide Derived Picrate Salts
    Letters in Applied Nanobioscience, 2024
Picrate salts exhibit numerous applications in the fields of medicine, energy, leather industries, dyes, forensic science, and many other fields. The present study synthesized a series of novel picrate salts (3a-d) in an excellent yield. A convenient method has been established to synthesize the picrate salts by treating picric acid with aromatic amines, namely 4-amino-4H-1,2,4-triazole, 6-methyl-N1-(4-(pyridin-3-yl) pyrimidin-2-yl) benzene-1,3-diamine, 4-nitrobenzamide and 4-fluoroaniline. The crystal structures of the synthesized compounds were studied using UV-visible, FT-IR, XRD, and SEM.
