Protective effect of pomegranate peel powder against gastric ulcer in rats Biointerface Research in Applied Chemistry, 2022 Gastric ulcer is a serious health problem that affects more than 10% of the World's population. Aspirin is the most common drug causes gastric ulcer also, most of the ulcer drugs have harmful side effects, so studies have focused on finding an alternative natural solution. This work provides a natural solution to protect the gut against ulcers, especially aspirin, by using a diet supplemented with pomegranate peel powder in rats. Levels of active components in pomegranate peel powder were detected using the certified methods. For the biological evaluation, 21 male rats (weight, 140-170 g) were used in three groups, group (1) is a control, group (2) ulcer group, and group(3) (ulcer supplemented group). The duration of the evaluation was 4 weeks. Gastric ulcer was produced by aspirin water suspension (500 mg/kg rat weight). The gene expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) were determined by RT-PCR. Pomegranate peel powder (10 % w/w) reduced the gastric ulcer area and ulcer index, gastric juice volume, and acidity. Pomegranate powder recovers gastric mucus content and gastric tissue at the histological level. Plasma nitric oxide production was raised while plasma TNF-α level was diminutive by pomegranate peel powder. The gastric mucosal TNF-α and COX-2 gene expression were significantly (p≤ 0.05) down-regulated (2.4 and 12.5 fold-change, respectively) using the pomegranate peel powder. This study introduces pomegranate peel powder (10%) as a protective food supplement against gastric ulcers.
Serum level of uromodulin as an early predictor marker of kidney disorders Salwa Mostafa El-Shebini, Hend A. Essa, Maha I. A. Moaty, Nihad H. Ahmed, Ahmed M. S. Hussein, et al. Open Access Macedonian Journal of Medical Sciences, 2021 BACKGROUND: Metabolic diseases are known to be risk factors of kidney injury. The glycoprotein Uromodulin Tamm-Horsfall protein is a biochemical marker specifically synthesized and secreted by kidney tubular epithelial cells.AIM: The study aimed to use novel biochemical parameters to predict early changes in renal functions and to use natural food supplements to help in the prevention and management of such conditions.METHODS: Crossover studies comparing two interventions trials. Subjects: Seventy obese females were included in this study. They were divided in two groups, first group (34 women) with mean age 45.82 ± 1.51 and mean body mass index (BMI) 35.65 ± 0.68 kg/m2, and second group (36 women) with mean age 49.80 ± 2.27, and mean BMI 37.67 ± 1.59. Intervention: All participants have followed a low caloric balanced regimen (1000–1200 Kcal/day) of the each groups consumed a different specific nutritional supplement composed mainly of whole grains and herbs. All patients were monitored clinically, anthropometrically, dietary 24 h recall and biochemically.RESULTS: After intervention all the recorded anthropometric parameters showed significant decreases at p ≤ 0.05–0.01. The serum uromodulin (sUMOD) increased significantly after intervention in both groups the increments were 15.56 and 9.37%. Numerically creatinine and urea decreased, while creatinine clearance increased.CONCLUSION: Data revealed the importance of using dietary therapy composed of hypocaloric diet with supplements made from whole grains and special herbs in management of obesity and its metabolic disorders. sUMOD proved to be an accurate biochemical marker that showed the kidneys’ response to the management in comparison to using usual diagnostic markers.
Impact of nutritional intervention on serum level of interferon gamma and insulin resistance in obese women: Considerations during the covid-19 crisis Hend A. Essa, Salwa M. El Shebini, Maha I. M. Moaty, Nihad H. Ahmed, Magda S. Mohamed, et al. Open Access Macedonian Journal of Medical Sciences, 2021 BACKGROUND: Obesity represents a major epidemic worldwide; it is accompanied by increased oxidative stress and reduction in immune efficacy.AIM: The objective was to assess the impact of a healthy balanced hypocaloric diet with two dietary supplements on obesity related metabolic disorders and interferon gamma production.SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Sixty obese women participated in the study that lasted for 8 weeks. They were divided into two groups, 30 subjects in each group, one group consumed a daily supplement in the form of cookies prepared mainly from corn flour, wheat germ and thyme, and the other consumed a blend composed mainly of barley flour, cocoa powder and ginger powder. All participants have followed a low caloric balanced regimen (1000-1200 KCal/day). Follow-up was performed with anthropometric measurements, dietary recall, and biochemical parameters.RESULTS: After intervention, the results showed a significant reduction in the anthropometric parameters, the obesity related metabolic disorders criteria with significant elevation in total antioxidant and interferon gamma. Positive significant correlations were detected between total antioxidant and interferon gamma and negative significant correlations were detected between interferon gamma with triglycerides, body mass index, percent body fat mass, and hip circumferences.CONCLUSION: All these issues have a very important role in decreasing the infection with covid-19.
Phyto-and bio-chemical evaluation of diospyros kaki l. Cultivated in Egypt and its biological activities S. S. El-Hawary, S. H. Tadros, M. M. AbdelMohsen, M. S. Mohamed, E. El Sheikh, et al. Brazilian Journal of Biology, 2020 Diospyros kaki L. or Costata cultivar is the main persimmon variety progressively consumed in the Egyptian market and exportation. The objective of this study was to investigate the bioprotective effects of the alcoholic extract of fruits as well as leaves of D. kaki using in-vivo rat models. Petroleum ether extracts of fruits and leaves were analytically characterized for saponifiable and unsaponifiable compounds by GC/MS. Main flavonoids were chromatographically isolated from 80% aqueous methanol extract of leaves. Chemical evaluation for fruits and leaves namely, content of moisture, ash, proteins, fatty acids, amino acids, fat and water soluble vitamins, minerals, carotenoids was carried out. Total antioxidant activity was determined by radical scavenging effects using DPPH assay. The effect on biochemical parameters and its biological activity were also performed. Results revealed the identification of the major compounds of saponifiable and unsaponifiable matters of fruits and leaves. Scopoletin, as well as, kaempferol, luteolin, rutin and apigenin 7-O-glucoside were isolated and identified. It showed that this plant can provide a good nutritional value and it is safe regarding the kidney and liver functions, good source that help in enhancing the antioxidant defense against free radicals. No abnormal effects were found in lipids profile on experimental animals and there were good results in the ratio of HDL and LDL cholesterol. Also, this plant can help in optimizing blood sugar, enhancing the level of blood haemoglobin. It is concluded that D. kaki displays a good source of nutrients and bioactive compounds that may contribute to its therapeutic benefits against the risk of disease complications.
