Effect of iron and sodium inclusion on some properties of silicate glass Manjunath T. Nayak, J. A. Erwin Desa, P. D. Babu Aip Conference Proceedings, 2019 Sodium silicate glasses with a fixed molar percentage of iron and varying percentages of sodium alkali have been synthesized by the method of melt quenching in air. The variation of glass transition temperatures Tg in this series can be correlated to the relative fractions of Fe2+ and Fe3+ as well as Na+ ions present in these glasses. UV-Visible spectra showed a trend of optical band gap with Na concentration which is related to the fraction of non-bridging oxygen atoms present in each glass. Magnetization studies showed these glasses to be purely paramagnetic at room temperature but at a temperature of 5K, to have some ferromagnetic character with a ten-fold enhanced magnetization.
Roles of iron and lithium in silicate glasses by Raman spectroscopy Manjunath T. Nayak, J.A. Erwin Desa Journal of Raman Spectroscopy, 2018 Raman spectroscopy has been used in a qualitative analysis of iron containing lithium silicate glasses. The iron was kept fixed at 8 mol% for all the iron containing samples with varying concentrations of Li2O and SiO2, as this resulted in samples that were fully vitreous in nature. The method of deconvolution of peaks in these data has been employed to understand the relative numbers of Q0, Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4 silicate structural units. Even though the iron concentration is constant, the linkages of silicate structural units show variation with increasing alkali content. The roles of lithium and iron have been found to be opposed to each other in that the presence of lithium discourages formation of tetrahedral linkages in the structure, whereas iron promotes corner connected tetrahedra or the presence of bridging oxygens.
Magnetic properties of Fe-Nd silica glass ceramics Manjunath T. Nayak, J. A. Erwin Desa, P. D. Babu Aip Conference Proceedings, 2018 Soda lime silica glass ceramics containing iron and neodymium have been synthesized. The XRD pattern revealed that the glass samples devitrified into multiple phases. Fe2O3 as an initial component converted into Fe3O4 in the sample during the synthesis, and was the main contributor to the magnetic property of the sample. The inclusion of Nd was found to enhance the magnetization of the sample at 5K. The coercivity of the sample increased with decrease in temperature from room to 5K.
