The history and institutional tradition in the conception of the exhibition “Biodiversity: knowing to preserve” at the Museum of Zoology of the University of São Paulo Marcus Soares, Sandra Escovedo Selles, Martha Marandino Investigacoes Em Ensino De Ciencias, 2025 This work proposes to understand the process of producing exhibition discourse with a focus on biological diversity in the exhibition “Biodiversity: knowing to preserve”, at the Zoology Museum of the University of São Paulo (MZUSP), taking its exhibitory and institutional history as a starting point. For this undertaking, documentary sources and oral statements from six subjects who were involved in the preparation and conception of the exhibition were used. In addition, descriptions of exhibitions prior to the one studied here were consulted. By cross-checking these data, it was possible to identify that institutional research, former exhibitions, their objects, certain content, knowledge and narratives, the theme of biodiversity and the academic traditions that belong to the universe of Natural History museums were significant components in the composition of the exhibition discourse of the current exhibition. Finally, it can be seen that the MZUSP is a space for memory and that it does indeed appear to fulfil the role of maintaining and transmitting a particular cultural heritage related to the paths of Natural History, Biology, Taxonomy and the particular knowledge of the craft of taxidermy. This demonstrates that the process of preparing the new exhibition did not “inaugurate” or create a “purely” genuine narrative about biodiversity, but rather that it produced new directions based on the previous narrative and on other repertories in the knowledge and practices of its creators.
Plants and Peoples exhibit at MUHNAC: analysis of traditional and scientific medicine from the perspective of the Epistemologies of South Martha Marandino, Maria Paula Meneses Journal of Science Communication, 2024 The article explores the ““Cure, Malaria, Frederic Welwitsch and the Healer”” theme of the exhibition “Plants and Peoples” from the Museum of Natural History and Science, Portugal. The study focuses on the research carried out by German naturalist F. Welwitsch on local plants in Angola as well as on history of lived colonial experience A. M. Mafumo, a healer from Mozambique, arrested for practicing “traditional medicine”. Using the analytical framework of the Epistemologies of the South we analyze the relationships between traditional and scientific knowledge using documentation, as well as interviews with curators and visitors. The article questions the exhibit' dialogue between these knowledges as an expression of an ecology of knowledges.
A study of the interactions and conversations of families visiting the museum of microbiology of the Butantan institute, São Paulo, Brazil Graziele Scalfi, Luisa Massarani, Martha Marandino, Waneicy Gonçalves, Jessica Norberto Rocha Journal of Biological Education, 2024 Science museums are key locations for informal education. They also enable research that explores how families structure their activities and conversations and how these contribute to learning experiences. The aim of this exploratory study, using qualitative and quantitative methodologies, was to analyse the process of family interactions during visits to a Brazilian science museum focused on microbiology and how their conversations mediated their learning experiences. Four groups, each consisting of a single family with children, participated in the study. Their visits were recorded using a subjective camera, and the audiovisual data were analysed regarding types of interactions and conversational content, based on an analysis protocol. The results reveal that the interactions and social dynamics that family groups engaged in during their visit provided cognitive and social learning experiences. The study also offers evidence on the role of children, the importance of conversations with adults during the visits, and the relevance of objects on exhibition in promoting learning conversations.
Representing biodiversity in science museums: perspectives from an STSE lens Martha Marandino, Erminia Pedretti, Ana Maria Navas Iannini International Journal of Science Education Part B Communication and Public Engagement, 2023 This paper explores how biodiversity is represented at the Life in Crisis Schad Gallery of Biodiversity (Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto). Using theoretical perspectives related to science, technology, society and environment (STSE), and biodiversity in science museums, we conducted a qualitative case study of the exhibit. Data collection included records of the exhibit through photos and videos; field notes; in-depth interviews with two museum professionals; and collection of documents and artifacts. The first analytical stage, based on inductive analysis, revealed that biodiversity is being represented as an ‘unknown’ topic, a loss and an unfinished narrative. The second analytical stage, deductively supported by the STSE framework, reflected a prominent logical reasoning angle, through which biological perspectives are routinary reflected in the exhibit. Our analyses also revealed hints of environmental ethics, stewardship, socio-ecojustice and value-centered views often associated in the exhibit with worldwide environmental issues and the idea of generic human beings. Our study suggests that the STSE lens can provide a framework to support the work of science museums around topics like biodiversity. It also highlights the importance of bringing local perspectives to the exhibit content, engaging with critical pedagogical strategies and amplifying the concept of sociobiodiversity.
Paulo Freire, Education, Dissemination and Natural Science Museums: relationships and tensions Martha Marandino, Rafael Kauano, Luciana Martins Cadernos De Sociomuseologia, 2022 The year 2020 celebrates the centenary of Paulo Freire, which takes place in the midst of the rescue of the founding concepts of his work and demonstrates the relevance of his critical thinking. His ideas have been present in Museology since the 1970s, influencing museological research and practice. In natural science museums, several works from the 1990s seek to identify theoretical and methodological trends in science education in exhibitions and educational activities. Within these trends, one can see the absence of productions that are based on critical theories and on Paulo Freire's ideas, which has been occurring more recently. This text discusses the articulations between research and practices in the fields of education and communication and science museums, questioning whether and how Paulo Freire's ideas became present. It was also intended to discuss the use of Freirean ideas in the context of science museums, focusing on two movements: scientific literacy and the relationships between science, technology, society and the environment. At the end, we propose some paths and argue in favor of a more intense use of some of the key concepts of Paulo Freire's work in the research and practices of natural science museums and problematize, given the complexity, conflicts and tensions that permeate today's world, about what science and what science education and communication we want to support in science museums. Key words: Paulo Freire; Education; Dissimination; Science museums
Science education research in science and technology museums in Brazil Science Education Research in Latin America, 2020 The chapter provides an overview of the research on museum education. It seeks to characterize some of the theoretical and methodological perspectives on the subject developed by science education researchers in Brazil, concerned with studying science museums as educational spaces. It is emphasized the importance that this subject acquired in national and international investigations, due to the historical relevance and political importance of the museums throughout their existence. Considering those aspects, it initially introduces some of the historical aspects of science museums, both in the national and international context, and then discusses the meaning of museum education. In the sequence, the research on education in museums of science and technology is addressed and, at the end, investigations developed by the groups of research coordinated by the authors are discussed, presenting theoretical and methodological frameworks and some of the main results. It is understood that the research on education in science museums, in its articulation with the field of science education, makes an enormous contribution to the understanding of the role of these institutions in society and, consequently, to the expansion and deepening of educational research.
