Characterization of Properties of Poly(vinylidene Fluoride) Using Instrumented Microindentation Test Bianca B. dos Santos, Victor J. R. R. Pita, Marysilvia F. da Costa Macromolecular Symposia, 2020 The microhardness evaluation of materials allows a quick prediction of their mechanical properties and the identification of morphological changes, making it an excellent tool for the characterization of parts with microstructural variations over time or that have geometric variations. In this work, instrumented microindentation test is performed on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) specimens with different degrees of crystallinity and crystalline structures. The microstructural differences are generated by changing the cooling temperature and the annealing duration. α‐phase and β‐phase are detected by FTIR analysis in all samples, which presented the same spectra. The mathematical relation between the microhardness and the crystallinity degree of PVDF is found, and the theoretical microhardness values of the crystalline and amorphous phases are determined. Microhardness is also related to the melting temperature of the polymer, which varies as a function of crystals perfection. This relationship is expressed through a linear equation.
Assessment of a polyamide used in flexible pipes after aging in deoxygenated water Danyelle Costa, Geovanio Oliveira, Leilane Cirilo, Marysilvia Costa Proceedings of the International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering OMAE, 2020 A high-performance polyamide grade of easy processability which presents excellent thermal and mechanical properties such as resistance to fatigue and creep is studied in this work. An accelerated aging of Polyamide 12 samples was performed in stainless steel autoclaves at 120°C in deoxygenated water at pH 8.7 in order to shorten the aging time and avoid oxidation. The samples were retrieved at distinct aging times which were enough to reach the asymptotic portion of the curve of corrected inherent viscosity (CIV) versus aging time. CIV measurements track modifications of the molecular weight due to hydrolysis. Afterwards, the samples were analyzed through their cross section in the core and edge layer in order to investigate changes due to diffusion effects. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis assesses the degree of crystallinity and melting temperature. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was employed in order to investigate changes in the thermal stability and the stage of degradation of the samples. Unlike conventional volumetric analysis techniques, the instrumented indentation tests (IIT) in micro-scale were performed to measure the mechanical properties such as elastic modulus (EIT) and hardness (HIT) along the thickness aiming to detect properties gradient between surface and core. The CIV measurements showed a decrease of 46.3% in the aged sample during the maximum aging time compared to the reference material.
Fatigue and quasi-static analysis of a new type of surface preparation used for the CFRP repair of steel offshore structures Valber Azevedo Perrut, Luiz Cláudio de Marco Meniconi, Eduardo Martins Sampaio, Ney Robson Ferreira Rohem, Marysilvia Ferreira da Costa Journal of Adhesion, 2019 In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in repairing offshore steel structures by using adhesively joined carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP). For such procedure, surface preparation plays a vital role to maintain the integrity of the joint and to ensure proper load transfer. The primary surface preparation used by the oil and gas industry is the grit blasting due to its known quality. However, the logistic required is a major drawback limiting the use of adhesively joined repairs. Other surface preparation procedures available are unable to promote proper treatment. In this paper, an alternative surface preparation methodology employing a portable machine that uses rotation and impact to treat the steel surface was evaluated by quasi-static and fatigue tests of CFRP/steel adhesively bonded using the double-lap joints. The joints were prepared using non-corroded and severely corroded steel surfaces treated by grit blasting or rotating impact machine. The corroded plate was used to evaluate the efficiency of the rotating impact machine in removing deeply penetrating oxides. Test results showed that the performance of the machine was comparable to grit blasting even for the severely corroded surface with deep pitting. Corrosion in the metallic substrate impaired the quasi-static and fatigue properties.
