  • Digital image-based measurement of degree of saturation on moving soil
Gerardo Morales, Núria M. Pinyol, Mauricio Alvarado, Eduardo E. Alonso
    Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 2025
This paper presents a novel methodology that combines particle image velocimetry-numerical particles and short-wave infrared spectral imaging for the noninvasive measurement of displacements and degree of saturation on moving soils. This allows for continuous monitoring and visualisation of soil behavior and provides valuable insight into the deformation patterns and moisture evolution. The method was applied to a small-scale dam failure experiment. The methodology offers an integrated, comprehensive, and noninvasive approach to investigating soil physical models by simultaneously measuring displacements, strains, velocities, and degree of saturation in soils in motion.

  • Landslide motion assessment including rate effects and thermal interactions: Revisiting the canelles landslide
Mauricio Alvarado, Núria M. Pinyol, Eduardo E. Alonso
    Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 2019
The re-activation of a large (40 Mm3) landslide on the valley slopes of a reservoir motivated a research initiative to estimate the risk of a fast-sliding mass moving into the reservoir. A previous simplified analysis had suggested that a joint consideration of strain rate effects on friction and thermal pressurization phenomena in the sliding surface could provide a rational approach to answer the question raised. The paper describes first the capability of strain rate effects on friction to reproduce long-term creeping records of two real cases. The joint and coupled phenomena of creeping motion and thermal pressurization in shearing bands was incorporated into a material point method computational technique for hydromechanical analysis of porous materials. A representative cross section of the Canelles landslide was then analysed, profiting from previous finite element investigations of the landslide. It was found that a rapid rate of landslide acceleration could be a possibility under extreme external actions. However, it was also found that a moderate strain rate effect on the basal residual friction angle could create conditions that avoid the triggering of a fast motion.
  • Thermal effects in landslide mobility
    N. M. Pinyol, M. Alvarado, E. E. Alonso, F. Zabala
    Geotechnique, 2018
The paper describes a thermo-hydro-mechanical formulation to model thermally induced effects due to the irreversible work input generated during soil deformation. The model was implemented into a material point calculation procedure. The method is applied to the analysis of landslides. A simple slope stability is first analysed. Mechanical work essentially dissipates in shearing bands, which develop excess pore water pressures. The marked effect of soil permeability to control the slide motion after failure is described. Shear band thickness is also a relevant control variable. The problem posed by the non-realistic thickness of shear bands in numerical calculation is addressed by means of a numerical procedure that includes consideration of embedded shear bands where the strains are assumed to be localised. Balance equations describing local flow and thermal interactions between shear bands and the remaining material are formulated. The method is applied to model the instability and subsequent rapid motion of Vajont landslide. Calculated run-out and sliding velocity reproduce, in a satisfactory manner, field observations.
  • Novel analysis for large strains based on particle image velocimetry
    Núria M. Pinyol, Mauricio Alvarado
    Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 2017
Over the last few decades, the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique has become an interesting tool used to measure displacements in the field of experimental mechanics. This paper presents a procedure to interpret PIV displacements, measured following an Eulerian scheme, with the purpose of providing accumulated displacements, velocities, accelerations, and strains on points representing physical particles. Strains are computed as the gradient of displacements. When compared with other standard procedures already published, the presented methodology is especially well suited to interpret large strains. The basis of the procedure is to map displacement increments measured through PIV analysis on the subset (or patch) centres into numerical particles that are defined as portions of the moving masses whose deformation is analyzed. The implementation of the method is explained in detail, highlighting its simplicity. The procedure can be used as a post-processor of currently available PIV software packages. The methodology is first applied to synthetic cases of rectangular samples in which known displacements are imposed and also to a sandy slope failure experiment involving large displacements. The method reproduces satisfactorily the recorded images.
