Synergistic Cu-Sb oxide electrocatalyst synthesized by sol-gel method for high-efficiency nitrate reduction to ammonia with suppressed hydrogen evolution AliReza Babaei, Milad Rezaei, Pirooz Marashi, William Mark Rainforth Scientific Reports, 2026 Antimony is one of the hydrogen evolution poison and copper is one of the well-known catalysts for the nitrate reduction to ammonia (NRA). Therefore, to synthesize an efficient electrode that can have the highest selectivity for the reduction of nitrate to ammonia and is accompanied by the lowest hydrogen evolution, in this study, a combination of different Cu to Sb ratios was prepared on a Ti substrate using the sol-gel method in the form of crystalline oxides (CuSb y Oₓ/Ti) to achieve the best catalytic activity and ammonia yield. A 2:1 ratio of Sb to Cu synthesized and calcined at 600 °C had the best catalytic properties. CuSb y Oₓ/Ti electrocatalysts were evaluated for NRA in an alkaline medium. The CuSb 2 O x electrocatalyst had the highest activity with the lowest cathodic Tafel constant of 78 mV dec − 1 . EIS results also showed that CuSb 2 O x has the lowest charge transfer resistance (R total =3.75 Ω cm 2 ). The measurements revealed that the CuSb 2 O x electrocatalyst performed superlative, with an NH 3 yield of 7280 µg h − 1 cm − 2 and an F.E. of 89% at a potential of -0.7 V vs. RHE. The high NH 3 yield of this oxide electrocatalyst, compared to other oxide compounds, highlights the synergistic effect of Cu and Sb.
Enhanced Anticorrosion, Antifouling, and Tribological Properties of PANI Composite Coating Reinforced by PVA, 2-Aminophenol, and Acrylic to Fabricate Sustainable Passive Film on 304 SS Mobina Moradi, Milad Rezaei, Pirooz Hoveida Marashi, William Mark Rainforth ACS Applied Polymer Materials, 2024 An anti-corrosion and electroactive coating of PANI/PVA was electrodeposited on the 304 SS to improve the interface passive film. However, due to poor physical stability and tribological properties, PANI/PVA is copolymerized by various amounts (0.25–1 M) of 2-aminophenol (2-AP) and covered by a thin layer of acrylic (AC). According to the results, not only is the corrosion resistance of PANI/PVA/AP@AC about 100 times higher than PANI/PVA in 3.5 wt % NaCl (EIS), but its wear rate has also decreased by ∼60% (pin-on-disk). Moreover, the friction coefficient of PANI/PVA/AP@AC has increased by 40% compared to PANI/PVA. The adhesion energy of PANI/PVA/AP@AC to the substrate is ∼34% higher than that of PANI/PVA (pull-off). In addition, the nickel content of passive film under PANI/PVA/AP@AC reached 4.7% from ∼0% for PANI/PVA (EDS). The defect density of the passive film decreased ∼100 times by increasing the concentration of 2-AP to 1 M (Mott–Schottky). Moreover, uncoated 304 SS was protected galvanically with SS@PANI/PVA/AP@AC (with noise corrosion resistance of Rn ∼ 106 Ω according to the galvanic corrosion evaluation). Finally, PANI/PVA/AP@AC remained intact after 160 h of immersion in the NaCl, and its potential reached +200 mV (electrochemical potentiometry). Therefore, PANI/PVA/AP@AC as a hybrid composite coating can sustain in situ anodic protection of 304 SS under harsh environmental conditions.
