Practical Prediction of Gas Separation Performance in Polymeric Membranes Using Machine Learning Hamid Zentou, Mohammed Abdullah Issa, Balqees S. Alshareef, Mahmoud M. Abdelnaby Chemistry an Asian Journal, 2026 Membrane‐based gas separation offers significant potential for carbon capture and clean energy applications; however, inconsistent experimental conditions often hinder direct comparison of membrane performance. In this work, machine learning (ML) is applied to predict gas permeability in polymeric membranes using a dataset comprising 3618 entries from 603 polymers across six gases (CO 2 , N 2 , H 2 , He, O 2 , and CH 4 ). Ensemble regression algorithms (Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, XGBoost, and Extra Trees) were developed and rigorously assessed. Model accuracy was evaluated using mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE), both expressed in Barrer for physical relevance. Among the models, Random Forest exhibited the most reliable performance, achieving an MAE of 346.92 Barrer and an RMSE of 888.69 Barrer, highlighting its strong predictive capacity across diverse membrane–gas systems. Feature importance analysis, combined with SHAP interpretation, indicated that membrane structure, operating parameters, and gas‐specific properties play key roles in determining permeability. Benchmarking predictions against the Robeson upper bound further identified high‐performing membranes for CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 2 separations. Overall, the study demonstrates the effectiveness of ML‐driven screening in accelerating membrane discovery and supporting the design of next‐generation gas separation materials.
Elucidating Heavy Metals Ions Detection Using Screen Printed Electrodes with Starch Carbon Dots as Modifier Sathya Rau Subramaniam, Zurina Zainal Abidin, Mohammed Abdullah Issa, Nur Haninah Harun, Musa Yahaya Pudza Water Air and Soil Pollution, 2025 Modified electrodes can produce significant improvement to detection of heavy metal. This is particularly useful especially in detecting similar characteristics heavy metal like same outer valence cations which can be challenging due to small signal difference. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of screen printed electrode modified with starch carbon dots. Cyclic voltammetry measurements were conducted between –1.0 to + 1.0 V at a scan rate of 200 mV/s in 0.5M acetic acid solution for sensing Zn(II) and Cu(II) at concentration range of 0.5 to 10 ppm and 0.25 to 5 ppm respectively. Morphology, functional groups, particle size distribution and surface charges analysis were done for further elucidation. Results showed enhanced electron-transfer kinetics and current intensity for the modified electrode with carbon dots. Detection Limits of 0.122 ppm and 0.089 ppm for Zn(II) and Cu(II) was recorded under optimum conditions with excellent repeatability. Testing on spiked samples which consisted of distilled water, electrolyte and heavy metals, gave and excellent recoveries of the zinc and copper of more than 90%wt recovery. Although Zn(II) and Cu(II) are divalent cations of same group, their interactions with CDs on electrode surface for sensing still produce detectable differing signals due to difference in atomic size, charges, electron number and their molecular structures. Based on above mentioned characterization, CV performance and reliability testing, the modified SPE-CDs is capable to produce reliable detection of heavy metals with similar valency number in aqueous solution.
Fluorescent Sensing of Fe3+ in Acidic Environment by Carbon Dots Derived From Empty Fruit Bunch Biochar: Central Composite Design Optimization Mohammed Abdullah Issa, Zaid H. Jabbar, Hamid Zentou, Reham Basim Khalaf Luminescence, 2025 A rapid, eco‐friendly, and selective monitoring of Fe(III) in real media utilizing carbon dots (CDs) as a luminescence detector has been reported. CDs were fabricated by a hydrothermal route from empty fruit bunch biochar. The as‐synthesized CDs were analyzed using various analytical tools. The results reveal that CDs have spherical shapes with a narrow particle size distribution and are enriched with multiple active sites, which impart excellent hydrophilicity and photostability. The CDs displayed bright blue emission under UV light with emission/excitation maxima at 452/350 nm, respectively, and a QY of 7.54%. The CDs exhibited high resistance to photobleaching and high salt conditions and pose a long lifetime of up to 6 months with no agglomeration. The detection variables, including pH, temperature, and CDs concentration, were optimized via response surface methodology. The statistical data verified the precision of the quadratic model for predicting the sensing performance of the nanoprobe. Under optimal environments, a linear range from 0 to 50 μM and a detection limit of 0.17 μM was obtained. The turn‐off process includes the strong coordination between Fe(III) and electron‐donating oxygen species on the edge of CDs. The rapid luminescence recognition using acid‐free materials renders CDs a promising option for water treatment.
