History and Emerging Trends in Yoruba Traditional Healthcare Practices: A Comparative View with Traditional Chinese Medicine Ahmed Ahmed Olaitan, Asmawi Ibrahim, Ahmad Aizuddin Md Rami Chinese Medicine and Culture, 2026 Indigenous medical systems remain vital to global health landscapes. Yoruba traditional healthcare (YTH) in West Africa and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in East Asia represent two of the most enduring and systematized healing traditions in their respective regions, each shaped by unique historical trajectories and cultural philosophies. This study examines the historical foundations and emerging trends in YTH, comparing them with the development and globalization of TCM to highlight convergences, divergences, and lessons for contemporary healthcare. The findings show both YTH and TCM share holistic worldviews. While YTH balances body ( ara ), mind/soul ( okan ), and spirit ( emi ), TCM centers on qi (气), yin-yang (阴阳), and Wu Xing (五行 five elements). Emerging trends include commercialization, knowledge casualization, integration with biomedical diagnostics, and participation in wellness markets. YTH and TCM illustrate the resilience and adaptability of indigenous medical systems. Comparative insights reveal opportunities for culturally grounded policy frameworks, collaborative research, and ethical globalization strategies that respect traditional knowledge while enriching contemporary healthcare pluralism.
The moderating effects of gender and tenure on the antecedents of employee engagement in local governments Ahmad Aizuddin Md Rami, Erda Roslan Khairi, Seyedali Ahrari, Asmawi Ibrahim, Ahmed Ahmed Olaitan Discover Psychology, 2025 Employee engagement is a critical factor in organizational success, particularly in the context of local governments, where effective public service delivery is paramount. Understanding the antecedents of employee engagement is essential for enhancing productivity, job satisfaction, and overall organizational performance. This study aims to identify the factors of organizational structure that contribute to employee engagement among the local government workforce in Malaysia. It is a quantitative study involving a total of 389 employees from 98 local government agencies. The findings indicate that the level of employee engagement, centralized hierarchy, and formalized job codification among the Malaysian local government workforce is high. Furthermore, the results reveal a moderate level of formalized rule observation and centralized decision-making. These findings also suggest a significant relationship between the antecedents and employee engagement. Regression analysis demonstrates that the centralized hierarchy of authority is the most influential factor in employee engagement. Additionally, the results of the moderation analysis show that the relationships between organizational factors and employee engagement are not influenced by gender and tenure in service. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the employee engagement of the local government workforce in Malaysia is significantly affected by the four factors of organizational structure. These results support the importance of organizational structure, thereby contributing to the current literature on the effectiveness of local governments in Malaysia.
Spiritual leadership among youth: Fostering sustainable development towards Islamic values Asmawi Ibrahim, Ahmad Aizuddin Md Rami, Mohd Fadle Mohd Isa, Ahmed Ahmed Olaitan Multidisciplinary Reviews, 2025 This study explores the role of spiritual leadership in promoting ethical and sustainable development among youth leaders within an Islamic context. Using a qualitative research design, focus group discussions were conducted with 11 youth leaders from various community organizations, representing diverse leadership experiences and societal roles. This study highlights the importance of spiritual leadership in addressing the unique challenges faced by youth leaders, such as navigating ethical dilemmas, balancing personal and communal responsibilities, and fostering resilience in the face of socio-economic and cultural constraints. By emphasizing leadership qualities rooted in Islamic principles, including justice (adl), compassion (rahma), and stewardship (khalifah), the study underscores the necessity of holistic youth development programs that focus on personal growth, ethical integrity, and community responsibility. The integration of spiritual and ethical training into youth leadership development has been shown to be instrumental in nurturing resilience, strengthening moral decision-making, and fostering a sense of shared responsibility within communities. This study contributes to the broader discourse on leadership by providing empirical evidence and a culturally relevant perspective on the integration of Islamic values into youth leadership. Additionally, it highlights the importance of family, mentorship, and structured leadership training in shaping future leaders who are both morally upright and socially conscious. Furthermore, this approach aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), advocating for leadership models that prioritize inclusivity, social justice, and sustainable community development. By offering a faith-driven, values-based leadership framework, this study provides a pathway for cultivating a new generation of ethical and socially responsible leaders who are equipped to address contemporary global challenges while upholding Islamic ethical principles.
SUNGAI TEMBELING’S IMPACT ON THE ORANG ASLI BATEK COMMUNITY IN KUALA TAHAN ASMAWI IBRAHIM, AHMED AHMED OLAITAN, and Journal of Sustainability Science and Management, 2025 This study was designed to determine the impact of the Sungai Tembeling ecosystem on the socio-economic and environmental sustainability of the Batek indigenous community in Kuala Tahan. Utilising a qualitative ethnographic research design, the study employs participant observation and interviews to gather primary data from the Batek people. The findings reveal that the Sungai Tembeling ecosystem plays a crucial role in providing employment opportunities, sustaining livelihoods, and offering essential resources such as water for domestic use. Additionally, it supports recreational and tourism activities, thereby enhancing the community’s socio-economic well-being. However, the Batek community faces significant challenges, including environmental degradation and pressures from modern development, which threaten their traditional way of life. The study recommends the active involvement of the Batek community in decision-making processes regarding ecosystem management, the integration of traditional knowledge into conservation strategies, and the implementation of awareness campaigns to highlight the ecological and cultural significance of the river. Furthermore, it advocates for legal recognition of the Batek people’s land rights and the promotion of sustainable agricultural and fishing practices to ensure the long-term sustainability of their environment.
