  • Economic Evaluation of Battery Energy Storage Integration into Plant with Cyclic Load
    Martin Vins, Martin Sirovy
International Conference on Applied Electronics, 2022
This paper deals with the simplified economic evaluation of the peak shaving by a battery-based energy storage system in plants with cyclic load profile (typically steel plants) and its own electrical energy source – typically the steam turbine. There are several possible motivations and/or benefits to be explored. The paper focuses on the optimal sizing of the turbine and BESS in relation to the total costs of investment and operation. There is proposed a methodology of integration into these plants. A control strategy of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) operation is proposed. The impact is put on the inclusion of all economically important factors. Finally, the case study is defined and evaluated, based on the steel plant load diagram and other key factors. The technical-economic potential of this application is discussed in the conclusion.
  • Synchronous Generator Active and Reactive Power Oscilations Reduction by BESS
Jaroslav Dragoun, Martin Vins, Martin Sirovy
International Conference on Electrical Computer and Energy Technologies Icecet 2022, 2022
In the presented paper, we address the threats arising from the negative transient effects in the electrical grid and we propose ways how to decrease their negative effect on the synchronous generator. The proposed solution uses BESS installed in the common electrical node with the synchronous generator. The main thread arising from these transients is a continuous decrease of the turbomachinery service life, by decreasing the health of the winding insulation or by the mechanical oscillations excited by the transients, which damage the turbine. The analysis and the proposed control algorithm for the BESS have been verified by the simulation model in Simulink (MATLAB) environment. In the Simulink model, we assumed that the turbomachinery is connected to a steam turbine. As a case study, a real measured grid voltage transient has been chosen. This transient consists of a sudden drop in grid voltage magnitude. The model includes proposed control loops for the battery energy storage system and the generator itself. These are key parts affecting the stability and performance of the proposed control and it is discussed in the conclusion.

Obtained availability parameters for the technologies and significant causes of shutdowns have been assessed. Moreover, the paper presents the solutions to improve the current state at the plant in Pilsen.
  • Turbomachinery Mechanical Oscillations Analysis and Active Compensation Design by EESS in Thermal Power Plant
Martin Vins, Jaroslav Dragoun, Patrik Kalaj, Martin Sirovy
Proceedings of the 2022 20th International Conference on Mechatronics Mechatronika Me 2022, 2022
There are analyzed a turbomachinery mechanical oscillations which are excited in the synchronous generator caused by electrical transients in the electrical grid. The higher voltage harmonics and interharmonics affecting the mechanical stability are identified and discussed. Then, there is presented a methodology using Fourier harmonic analysis of the generator voltage to identify potentially harmful frequencies of the voltage. Moreover, there is presented design of active protection system using Electronic Energy Storage System (EESS) which is a specifically designed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) extended by superior control unit handling mathematical model of turbomachinery and control algorithms commanding directly the power converter. The EESS is connected to the point of common coupling (PCC) with the synchronous generator. The protection system generates electric currents based on the designed methodology to compensate identified harmful voltage frequencies. The state of the art of the project and the future development is summarized in the conclusion.

Two different approaches for the calculation of the household photovoltaic (PV) installations energy balance are presented and discussed in this paper. The main methodology is based on the Monte Carlo method is proposed and applied to the case study with the effort to increase the annual energy balance calculation accuracy without increasing significantly problem complexity. Results are discussed and compared to the second approach based on direct calculation using only mean values as well as with the real (measured) values of the household energy balance.

  • Accuracy Evaluation of Synchronous Generator Models in PSAT
Martin Vins, Karel Nohac, Martin Sirovy
Proceedings 2021 IEEE 19th International Power Electronics and Motion Control Conference Pemc 2021, 2021
The descriptions and simulations of different differential order synchronous machine models are analyzed in this paper. Focus is paid on the Power System Analyses Toolbox models in the Simulink environment (MATLAB). The response of the models on the three-phase short circuit fault is evaluated, including pros and cons of each model as well as appropriate applications. The verification of the results is based on comparison with another independent synchronous machine model and analytical three phase short circuit calculation based on the operational measurements and observations.
  • Integration of Battery Energy Storage in Thermal Power Plant
Martin Vins, Jaroslav Dragoun, Martin Sirovy
IECON Proceedings Industrial Electronics Conference, 2020
The paper focus on the benefits of close integration of battery based energy storage directly into thermal plants. The attention is paid to use of the energy storage for primary frequency control in cooperation with classical steam turbine control. The model topology of the turbomachinery with all modifications is described and discussed. Three case studies are investigated – the primary frequency control managed by either only turbine, only energy storage and by cooperation of both turbine and energy storage. The other benefits of integration energy storage into power plant systems are discussed in the conclusion.

2020 27th International Workshop on Electric Drives Mpei Department of Electric Drives 90th Anniversary Iwed 2020 Proceedings, 2020
Model based energy management and automation systems are becoming an effective solution in the field of heating systems for residential building. This paper presents a Matlab/Simulink based thermal model for a dwelling with a heating system (HS). The heating system is equipped with a centrifugal pump that has a variable speed drive allowing implementing model based control strategy. The model allows controlling the indoor climate in conformity with the defined reference point to keep the desired temperature inside the building. Also, the approach in which a model of a building is selected can simplify the control structure for thermal regulation. The paper provides an example of thermal model selection and calculation of its parameters that are designed to satisfy system requirements for a dwelling by taking into consideration the thermal comfort with minimal energy consumption. All parameters of the model can be adjusted according to the needs of building configuration and desired indoor temperature. The model helps to estimate the energy consumption of the heating system in the broad range of outdoor weather conditions.
