These ecosystems sequester carbon in both plant biomass and sediments, with the ability to store carbon for centuries. However, accurately quantifying blue carbon storage in salt marshes remains challenging due to the dynamic nature of these ecosystems and the limitations of traditional field measurement techniques. Recent advancements in remote sensing technology, particularly hyperspectral remote sensing, offer a promising approach to monitoring salt marshes on a large scale with high spatial and spectral resolution. Hyperspectral sensors provide detailed spectral data, enabling the differentiation of vegetation species, assessment of plant health, and mapping of carbon-rich habitats. Additionally, we explore the latest technological innovations, including satellite-based sensors and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which enhance data collection in challenging coastal environments.

Seagrass ecosystems, vital for biodiversity and carbon sequestration, are highly sensitive to pollutants, which can degrade their health and function. Traditional methods of contaminant detection often involve time-consuming fieldwork and limited spatial coverage. However, drone imagery, combined with ML techniques, offers a powerful tool for rapid, large-scale monitoring. ML algorithms can analyze high-resolution drone images to detect subtle changes in water quality, seagrass health, and potential contamination levels, including heavy metals, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals.

Earth Observation and Deep Learning for Coastal Monitoring Mapping and Management, 2026 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology offers a powerful tool for the detailed mapping and monitoring of mangrove ecosystems. Mangroves are critical to coastal protection, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration, but their structure and carbon storage capabilities are often difficult to assess using traditional methods. UAV-based LiDAR allows for high-resolution 3D reconstruction of mangrove canopies, capturing detailed information on canopy height, density, and complexity. This data enables accurate carbon stock estimation by providing precise measurements of above-ground biomass, which is essential for understanding the role of mangroves in carbon sequestration. The ability to perform non-invasive, high-precision surveys over large and remote areas makes UAV-based LiDAR particularly suited for monitoring mangrove forests, especially in regions that are difficult to access.
