The Electrochemical Society
Safety and quality control are important for long-term storage and preservation of food. Glucose and food pH are the two most common markers for evaluating food quality. Herein, we constructed a Ni/NiO@RuO2 heterostructure-based two-way sensor via a novel eruption combustion pattern (ECP) using non-conventional amino acid as a propellant. This approach has the unique points of interests of in situ doping of oxides and the formation of heterojunctions, providing well-developed pores and high surface areas to enhance the material performance. The Ni/NiO@RuO2 heterostructures have been tested as a bi-functional catalyst for glucose and pH sensing. The sensor exhibits a fast response time of <0.1 ± 0.02 s, a sensitivity of 641.95 ± 0.5 μA mM−1 cm−2 towards glucose with a 0.4 ± 0.08 μM detection limit and a linear response of 0.1 to 5 mM. As a pH sensor, it exhibits an acceptable sensitivity of −41.6 mV pH−1 with a response time of <50 s over a pH range of 2–12. Moreover, this bi-functional sensor based on Ni/NiO@RuO2 performs well when applied to a selection of beverage samples. This study provides a new scalable and low-cost approach to fabricating hetero-oxide nanostructures with controllable heterojunctions for various sensor applications.

• Investigation on synthesis, spectral, mechanical and third-order nonlinear optical studies of novel organic crystal: Bis creatininium oxalate
A. Thirugnanam, V. Thayanithi, and P. Praveen Kumar

AIP Publishing
A novel organic Bis Creatininium Oxalate (BCO) crystal was grown by slow solvent evaporation technique. Single crystal XRD study shows that BCO crystal belongs to monoclinic system with space group P21/n. Optical absorbance of the grown BCO crystal was observed from UV-Vis-NIR spectral study and its lower cutoff wavelength found at 310 nm. The BCO crystal had a wide optical band gap of 3.91 eV. FTIR spectral analyses confirmed the functional groups present in the crystal. The mechanical behavior of the grown crystal was identified through Vickers microhardness test. The third order nonlinear optical parameters such as susceptibility, refractive index and absorption coefficient of BCO crystal were evaluated by Z-scan technique.

• Growth, optical, mechanical and thermal behavior of unidirectionally grown L-Glutaminium p-Toluenesulfonate crystal
V Thayanithi and P Praveen Kumar

IOP Publishing
Organic crystal of L-Glutaminium p-Toluenesulfonate (LGPT) was grown in unidirectional by Sankaranarayanan and Ramasamy (SR) method. The grown crystal belongs to monoclinic crystal system with noncentrosymmetric space group P21. High resolution XRD confirms crystalline perfection of the grown crystal. Optical transmission shows that unidirectional grown crystal has higher transmittance and the lower cut-off wavelength is 290 nm. The emission wavelength of grown crystal is 410 nm and emission region is confirmed by luminescence spectra. The laser damage threshold value of unidirectional crystal has increased by 0.3 GW cm−2. The grown LGPT crystals belong to hard material category and it confirms the normal indentation size effect. The grown LGPT crystal is thermally stable upto 165 °C and decomposition of the molecules were elucidated by using TGA and DSC. Powder second harmonic generation measurement confirms the efficiency of the grown LGPT crystal is 0.8 times that of KDP.

• Investigation of unidirectional growth and characterization of nonlinear optical L-alaninium p-toluenesulfonate crystal
V Thayanithi, K Rajesh, and P Praveen Kumar

IOP Publishing
An aminoacid nonlinear optical crystal of L-alaninium p-toluenesulfonate (LAPT) was grown by Sankaranarayanan and Ramasamy (SR) method. The seed crystal of LAPT was grown with the help of a conventional solution method. The size of the grown crystal is 50 mm length and 20 mm diameter for (0 1 0) plane. The solubility of LAPT was determined in deionized water. The grown LAPT crystal belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system with noncentrosymmetric space group P212121. The morphology of the grown LAPT crystal reveals a hexagonal shape with six facet. The lower cut-off wavelength of the grown crystal is found to be 285 nm. Optical transmittance of the crystal grown by SR method is increased by 20%, when compared with the conventionally grown crystal. The LDT value of the SR-grown LAPT crystal has increased by 0.57 GW cm−2, compared with LAPT crystal grown by conventional method. The emission spectra of the grown crystal was analysed by photoluminescence analysis. The mechanical strength of the grown LAPT crystal was analysed by using Vickers hardness test, and the work hardening coefficient (n) of the LAPT crystal grown by SR method is found to be 2.20. The second harmonic generation efficiency of the LAPT crystal is 2.1 times that of KDP.

Single crystals of L-serine phosphate (LSP) were grown by slow evaporation technique. The optical studies reveal the transparency of the crystal in the entire visible region. Grown crystal was subjected to single crystal XRD diffraction technique. Thermal studies of LSP confirm the thermal stability of the crystal and it is stable up to 210°C. The functional groups and optical behaviour of the crystal were identified from FT-IR and UV-Vis analysis. The crystals were also characterized by microhardness and photoconductivity to determine the mechanical strength and the optical conductivity. Laser damage threshold and nonlinear optical activity of the grown crystal were confirmed by Q-switched Nd : YAG laser beam.

Hindawi Limited
A new organic charge transfer molecular complex salt of benzimidazolium salicylate (BSL) single crystals was grown by the slow evaporation solution growth technique using methanol as a solvent at room temperature. The grown crystals were characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) which confirms that the crystal belongs to monoclinic system with the centrosymmetric space group P21/c. The crystalline perfection of the grown crystal was analyzed by high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD). The presence of various functional groups was identified by FTIR spectrum. UV-Vis spectral study reveals that the BSL crystal is optically transparent in the wavelength region 342 nm–1100 nm. Dielectric measurements of the crystal at various frequencies were also determined. The mechanical properties of the grown crystal were assessed using Vickers microhardness testing. Nonlinear optical property of the crystal was confirmed using Kurtz and Perry powder technique and the SHG efficiency of the BSL crystal is 0.7 times greater than that of the standard KDP crystal.
