  • Economic design of X̄ charts with multiple assignable causes using genetic algorithm
M Chaitanya Mayee, Vijaya Babu Vommi, P. N. E. Naveen
    Aip Conference Proceedings, 2019
The Economic Design of X̅ control charts involves the determination of the optimum values of the three control chart parameters: The sample size n, the control limit coefficient k and the sampling interval h. Earlier Duncan and other developers has pioneered different models and approximate methods for the economic design of X̅ control charts. This paper deals with the economic design of X̅ control charts for multiple assignable causes. Genetic Algorithm (GA) is applied to optimize the loss cost function and for obtaining the optimal solutions of these parameters n, k & h for such charts. The results of all numerical examples show that the proposed optimization procedure is better than the earlier mentioned models.
  • Use of six sigma in productivity improvement and cycle time reduction in piping installation during vessel construction
Indrajeet Kumar Thakur, M. Chaitanya Mayee, P. N. E. Naveen
    Aip Conference Proceedings, 2019
Six Sigma (6σ) is a set of techniques and tools for process improvement. It seeks to improve the quality of the output from a process by identifying and removing the causes of defects and minimizing variability in manufacturing or the process. Some have found the Six Sigma methodology an excellent way to improve their processes as it uses statistical tools to measure processes in terms of defects and variation, transforming them into opportunities for business growth. The project would aim to examine the established piping installation process of a vessel construction, analyse the relevant data to reduce the variability and reduce the cycle time by reducing the rework. It would aim to focus on the existing quality process, analyse the data of acceptance of installed pipes as per QAP, use five established steps of six sigma to provide the requisite control measure for improving the productivity and reducing the cycle time in a vessel construction project. Consistency in achieving planned targets during vessel construction project requires timely availability of Inspection cleared pipes/spools for subsequent processes of Flushing, Leak test & Final Inspection before connecting them, with live engineering systems. The project would also measure the initial sigma level of the existing process and aim to conclude by providing recommended ways of reducing the rejection during quality inspection using established six sigma processes. This project would eventually aim to improve the production process and reduce the cycle time of the entire piping installation process.
  • An application of interpretive structural modeling in sustainable supply chain management
    Kevin Abraham*, , P N E Naveen, Chaitanya Mayee M, , and
International Journal of Engineering and Advanced Technology, 2019
The advent of globalization in the market has led to huge competition among the companies in various fields to achieve best supply chain practices. Increasing focus on environmental concerns has driven critical changes in industries’ strategy by incorporating sustainability in their supply chain. A supply chain which does not threaten the opportunities for future generations by considering environmental and social impact in addition to the economic impact leads to the concept of Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM). Firms adopt sustainability by implementing specific practices - named as SSCM practices, in supply chain. However they struggle to identify the influential practices. This Paper intends to analyze the SSCM practices in plywood Industries in Visakhapatnam using Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM). ISM method is used to develop a structural model to identify the influential practices. The SSCM practices are identified through literature review and from domain experts and managers of industries. Then practices are grouped under the dimensions of sustainability namely economic, environmental and social. And ISM model is built through which the most dominant practice among them in each dimension is identified.

  • Mechanical, wear and fatigue behavior of functionalized CNTs reinforced POM/PTFE composites
    Bhanu K Goriparthi, P N E Naveen, H Ravi Shankar, Somnath Ghosh
    Materials Research Express, 2019
The main focus of this work is to improve the strength, stiffness, wear resistance and fatigue strength of polyoxymethylene (POM). For this purpose, POM is incorporated with a lubricating additive polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and reinforced with silanized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). PTFE filled POM composites with varying weight fraction of PTFE and hybrid composites with 1 wt% silanized CNTs and varying weight fractions of PTFE were fabricated by melt compounding using a twin screw extruder followed by injection molding. Tensile, flexural, wear and fatigue behavior of the developed composites were evaluated. Incorporation of PTFE resulted in a significant decline of tensile properties, flexural properties and fatigue strength, whereas specific wear rate and coefficient of friction increased significantly. Reinforcing PTFE filled POM composites with 1 wt% functionalized CNTs has led to improvement of strength, stiffness, wear resistance and fatigue strength. Hybrid composites with 10 wt% PTFE and 1 wt% functionalized CNTs resulted in improvement of strength and stiffness by 31% and 50% respectively and decrease in wear rate and friction coefficient by 67% and 44% respectively as compared to pristine POM.
