Graphene oxide-based sorbents modified with waste orange peel biochar for Cd(II) removal from aqueous waste streams Chandrakant D. Ghugare, Nilesh V. Rathod, Ankita Rao, Jayshri S. Jadhao, Santosh M. Chavan, Akash V. Kubade, Vrashali S. Kalyani, Arun B. Patil Separation Science and Technology Philadelphia, 2024 Living organisms are at great risk from the highly toxic metal cadmium (II). It is not allowed to be in industrial effluent or drinking water that is dumped into cadmium-containing water bodies. It has been classified as a carcinogen by the IARC and the US EPA. Thus, it is essential to discover a practical and economical technique for removing cadmium from an aqueous solution. In the present work, a novel and easy-to-prepare component of graphene oxide/orange peel/chitosan composite (GO-OP-CS) was prepared and examined using various analytical techniques as a hybrid product with improved physicochemical properties and metal ion Cd(II) adsorption capabilities. The results showed that Cd (II) ion adsorption occurred initially fairly fast and that a pH of 6 was optimal for both adsorption and removal of Cd (II) ions. The thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption of Cd(II) is spontaneous and exothermic. The experimental results showed that the functional groups present on the adsorbent surfaces (such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, epoxy, amine, and so on) led to the improvement of the Cd(II) metal's ability to absorb. This novel composite exhibited a high adsorption capacity (qmax) of 537.63 mg/g. The results of the toxic Cd(II) sorption using the synthesized composite showed that its adsorption kinetics and sorption isotherm confirmed the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, respectively. The proposed method is also reliable for Cd(II) sorption for preconcentration and remediation before Cd testing from genuine samples, such as wastewater, digested tobacco, and e-battery samples.
Encapsulation of dipeptidyl peptidase-IV inhibitory peptides from alpha-lactalbumin extracted from milk of Gir cows – A Bos indicus species Swapnil Ramrao Patange, Latha Sabikhi, Prashant Ashok Shelke, Nilesh Rathod, Abdul Hussain Shaik, Yogesh Khetra, Sathish Kumar M H International Journal of Dairy Technology, 2022 An attempt has been made to encapsulate dipeptidyl peptidase‐IV (DPP‐IV) inhibitory peptides which were decrypted from hydrolysis of α‐lactalbumin of milk of Gir cows. The effect of salt, pectin, homogenising speed on emulsion stability and encapsulation efficiency was examined. The optimised double emulsion containing 5% DPP‐IV inhibitory peptides had 17.33 ± 0.97 μm mean diameter, −35.43 ± 1.85 mV zeta potential and 93.00 ± 0.90% encapsulation efficiency. The emulsion stored at 5 ± 1°C and 37 ± 1°C exhibited stability of 90 and 20 days respectively. Encapsulated peptides showed ~4 times better DPP‐IV inhibition activity than nonencapsulated after simulated digestion.
pH Dependent Self-Assembly of Single-Pyrene-Armed Calix[4]arene: Modulation and Complexation with p-Sulfonatocalix[6]arene Vrashali S. Kalyani, Sharadchandra T. Gawhale, Nilesh V. Rathod, Prabhat K. Singh, Dipalee D. Malkhede Chemistryselect, 2019 The photophysical behaviour of a single pyrene substituted calix[4]arene derivative (MPCX4) has been investigated, as a function of pH, using steady state fluorescence and time‐resolved emission spectroscopic techniques. An interesting dimer emission band has been observed exclusively in the alkaline solution (pH > 8) which has been attributed to the hydrophobic and stacking interaction between the pyrene moieties of the adjacent MPCX4 molecule. The self‐assembled MPCX4 is disrupted by the introduction of another calixarene based host, p ‐sulfonatocalix[6]arene (SCX6), which eventually leads to the 1:1 complex formation between MPCX4 and SCX6, which is further characterised by 1 H NMR, FT‐IR and HR‐MS techniques. This complexation between MPCX4 and SCX6 also leads to the modulation of the prototropic equilibrium of MPCX4.
Studies on complexation and supercritical fluid extraction of Cd2+ with calixarenes Nilesh V. Rathod, Ankita Rao, Pradeep Kumar, Karanam L. Ramakumar, Dipalee D. Malkhede Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research, 2015 In the present study, we explored the extraction of Cd2+ by supercritical fluid carbon dioxide using calixarenes as complexing agents in acidic medium. The optimum conditions for the extraction of cadmium were found to be 30 min of static extraction followed by 30 min of dynamic extraction, a temperature of 323 K, a pressure of 20.27 MPa, a CO2 flow rate of 2 mL min–1, and a nitric acid concentration of 0.1 M. Among the studied calixarenes, hexaacetylcalix[6]arene gave the maximum extraction efficiency of (90 ± 2)% in acidic medium. The presence of fluorinated pentadecafluoro-n-octanoic acid led to the enhancement of the extraction efficiency. The formation of a cadmium–calixarene complex was supported by energy-dispersive X-ray spectrocopy and UV–visible absorbance spectrocopy. Calixarene and its complex with cadmium were found to have distinctly different features in their scanning electron microscopy images. A solvent extraction study was carried out to study the thermodynamic aspects of complex formation and to establish the stoichiometry of the complex of the type [Cd(calixarene)]2+. The present method was utilized for the supercritical fluid extraction of cadmium from real samples of battery, paint, tobacco, and wastewater.
Complexation with calixarenes and efficient supercritical CO2 extraction of Pb(ii) from acidic medium Nilesh Vasram Rathod, Ankita Rao, Pradeep Kumar, Karanam Lakshmi Ramakumar, Dipalee Dileep Malkhede New Journal of Chemistry, 2014 The present study describes the extraction of lead(II) from acidic medium with supercritical carbon dioxide using various calixarenes. It involves the investigation of the effect of temperature, acid molarity, and the metal to complexing agent molar ratio on supercritical fluid extraction efficiency. Efficient extraction of Pb(II) was observed for p-t-butylcalix(4)arene with (92 ± 3)% extraction at 323 K, 20.27 MPa, 30 minute static time followed by 30 minute dynamic time and a metal to complexing agent molar ratio of 1 : 5. The complexing ability of Pb(II) with calixarene was established by absorption and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The scanning electron micrograph of calixarene and the lead–calixarene complex was studied. The structure of the Pb(II)–calixarene complex has been proposed based on solvent extraction in hexane and IR spectroscopic analysis of the extract. Thermodynamic aspects of extraction were also studied and the extraction reaction was found to be entropy driven. Interference from other metal ions, on Pb(II) extraction behaviour, has been investigated. The developed method has been utilized for extraction of Pb(II) from real samples viz. paints, batteries, tobacco and wastewater.
