  • Redesign of food packaging using Kansei Engineering and sustainability design

    Currently, the development of packaging design is very advanced and rapid. One of the efforts that are widely used by Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the food sector is to improve their packaging. Current packaging developments are also starting to collaborate elements of sustainability and also the feelings of consumers. Therefore, the research designed packaging using a psychological approach based on the feelings and emotions of consumers, namely Kansei engineering. In addition to kansei engineering, it also includes sustainability elements in the packaging design. Based on the results, 43 kansei words were obtained and then simplified into 16 kansei words. The selected packaging design is a coloured flat pouch without the use of plastic, complete with product information and packaging attributes. The aim of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of the new packaging design in garnering positive consumer responses and to assess its potential impact on increasing consumer buying interest in the product.

    The majority of Indonesia's population adheres to Islam at 87.2%. The large number of adherents of Islam affects the number of requests for halal products, especially broiler meat in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. This is supported by the large number of Chicken Slaughter Houses (CSH) with a total of 1,232 in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. However, only 49 slaughterhouses have been certified halal by Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI). This is not proportional to the amount of CSH. The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that influence the intention of CSH owners to make halal certificates using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) model with the addition of religiosity and knowledge factors using purposive sampling method. The questionnaire was distributed face to face that targeted a minimum of 100 respondents with the specific criteria of CSH with age minimum 2 years old. The collected data was examined using the SPSS application, which is a multiple linear regression module. This study uses the variables religiosity, knowledge, perception control, subjective norms, attitudes, and intentions. The conceptual model consists of 2 models. The first model is the influence of religiosity factors, and knowledge of the attitude of CSH owners in making halal certification. The second model is attitudes, subjective norms, and perception control of CSH owners in making halal certification. The results showed that the knowledge and religiosity factors had a significant positive effect on the attitude of CSH owners in making halal certification. Attitude factors, perception control, and subjective norms have a significant effect on the intention of CSH owners in making halal certification. These factors can simultaneously explain the attitude of CSH owners in making halal certification by 2.9%, and the intention of CSH owners in making halal certification is 7.5% while the rest is influenced by other factors.
  • Assessing the optimal compressive strength of eco-friendly bricks using full factorial design

    Eco-friendly brick is one of the innovations that can be developed to reduce plastic waste. Plastic waste is mixed using clay and epoxy resin to be united into Eco-friendly brick. This research was conducted to understand the interactions between the parameters of the eco-friendly brick mixing process through the Full Factorial Design (FFD) approach. Two variables were observed: epoxy resin-clay ratio (30-50%) and PET particle (1-5mm). FFD with 22 replications resulted in a total of 8 experimental sets. Design Expert was used to optimize the compressive strength response produced as a variable of the prepared eco-friendly brick. From the results of Design Expert, it is found that the optimum processing parameters are in the condition of 37.78% ratio, and 3.58 mm for PET particle size which will produce the maximum compressive strength of 78.65 MPa with a coefficient of determination R2 of 0.9720. Overall, this study has significance in facilitating processing in the manufacture of eco-friendly bricks. Research and implementations involving mixes of PET particles and epoxy resin in producing environmentally friendly bricks have demonstrated the significant potential for these materials to enhance the compressive strength of sustainable brick.

    Lean Six Sigma is a systematic and scientific operations management methodology aimed to improve the performance of their manufacturing processes through the elimination of waste. The objective of this paper is to analyses the problem of increasing demand of briquettes in BriqCo (Briquettes Coconut shell Charcoal) company. in this case, the company has a waste problem due to defective products amounting to 10.2% of the total production of 169.298 kg. The high defects cause the company to suffer losses profits due to the re-production process of defects and a decrease in selling because the unsuitable quality. This study uses the Lean Six Sigma – Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control (DMAIC) method. The define stages use the SIPOC diagram to determine the elements involved in the production process and Value Stream Mapping. Measure stages to determine the level of sigma based on production results. The analyze uses a fishbone diagram to determine the root cause problems. In improve, the application of the 5S Method and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) proposed for a work improvement process that aims to improve the production process. In Control stage, the application of new SOP conducted to improve the production process in order to reduce defects. Based on the results, the initial sigma level reached 3.19. The causes of defects in briquette products consist of human, material, machine, method and environmental factors. With the application of 5S through SOP, it is expected that the level of disability will decrease by 50%.

    The process of urbanisation contributes to the growth of waste generation and causes environmental pollution. One of the most common plastic waste is polyethylene terephthalate (PET). This plastic waste is often used as mixed material in construction. The use of life-cycle assessment (LCA) is a possible tool to assess the sustainability of a product in the long term. After analysing the latest literature, it was found that the study of PET waste in building materials is one of the sustainable alternatives for waste reduction. This research contributes to the improvement of sustainability in alternative building materials through LCA. A gate-to-gate approach is adopted in this research. LCA Calculations for the production of eco-bricks were carried out in accordance with ISO 14044. GaBi software was used to identify and quantify impacts within the system boundaries. The calculations were based on the EDIP 2003 method for assessing impacts. The results show that the use of epoxy resin and PET as raw materials for eco-tiles has an impact on ozone formation (OF) of 118 m2 UES*ppm*hours, which is due to the use of epoxy resin chemicals as adhesives in the production of eco-bricks. Eco-bricks made of PET and epoxy resin have better compressive strength than other materials. The addition of epoxy resin adhesive can increase the compressive strength of the eco-bricks by 50%. Despite the advantages of using epoxy resin and PET in eco-bricks, there are many uncertainties about their environmental impact. It can be concluded that the use of epoxy resin and PET particles in the production of eco-bricks does not pose excessive environmental risks and their use as alternative mixtures for the production of eco-bricks does not lead to a significant reduction in the environmental profile.
  • Optimization of PET Particle-Reinforced Epoxy Resin Composite for Eco-Brick Application Using the Response Surface Methodology

    Brick is a common building material that is used in society for constructing buildings. A viable environmental strategy to lessen the amount of plastic waste involves the inclusion of plastic trash in building materials. Globally, there is a severe issue with the disposal of plastic garbage in landfills. The primary and secondary carbon bonds that are formed in plastic packaging wastes can severely contaminate the environment. Hence, managing plastic waste to generate new and useful items is essential. One of the most practical ways to safeguard the environment is to manufacture eco-bricks from PET waste and epoxy resin. Additionally, as there is no combustion involved in the production of this eco-brick; it does not harm the environment. Eco-brick can be defined as a novel concept and approach to waste management and recycling. Eco-bricks have many advantages, such as easy availability and being environmentally friendly. This study aimed to improve the composition of the eco-brick using a mixture of epoxy resin and PET particles. In this study, a mathematical modelling technique called the Response Surface Method (RSM) was designed using the Central Composite Design (CCD). Variable input factors were used to develop eco-bricks such as mixture ratio (10–90%), particle size (1–5 mm), and drying time (1–7 days), whereas the variable response included the compressive strength. The complete experimental design was developed using Design Expert 11 software, and simulation experiments with 17 sets of parameters were generated. The microstructural characteristics of the eco-brick were examined using SEM. The results of the experiments indicated that the most optimised parameters that could be used for eco-brick application were: a PET particle size of 1.1 mm, a mixing ratio of 89.9%, and a curing time of 6.9 days. Earlier research that was conducted regarding the production of eco-bricks using a PET particle and epoxy resin mixture showed that these materials had a high potential to boost compressive strength. The quadratic model was used as the basis for the regression analysis for generating the response equations. Since the difference between the experimental and anticipated values was less than 5%, it was concluded that the results of the experimental and predictive tests showed good agreement. The model used in this study yielded noteworthy outcomes. As a result, the suggested statistical model can offer a clear understanding of designing experiments and variables that affect the production of eco-brick using a blend of PET particles and epoxy resin.
