  • Improving diagnostics and surveillance of malaria among displaced people in Africa
Toufik Abdul-Rahman, Oyinbolaji Akinwande Ajetunmobi, Gafar Babatunde Bamigbade, Innocent Ayesiga, Muhammad Hamza Shah, et al.
International Journal for Equity in Health, 2025
African communities that have been forced to leave their homes experience a considerably greater susceptibility to malaria as a result of densely populated living conditions, restricted availability of healthcare, and environmental influences. Internally displaced individuals frequently live in large settlements with restricted availability to drinking water, essential sanitation, and medical services, intensifying the spread of malaria. As a result, the occurrence of malaria is significantly more common among refugees and internally displaced individuals compared to those who are not displaced. This leads to greater rates of illness and death, especially among young people. Insufficient monitoring worsens the condition, leading to delayed identification and medical intervention, and contributing to a higher incidence of severe malaria and deaths. Furthermore, these communities are faced with economic consequences that contribute to the continuation of poverty and the worsening of socio-economic inequalities. Furthermore, the psychological impact of malaria, which is marked by feelings of anxiety and uncertainty, is particularly severe in vulnerable populations such as displaced children and pregnant women, aggravating the overall burden. Hence, addressing malaria in displaced populations in Africa requires comprehensive and well-coordinated strategies. Advanced diagnostic and surveillance technologies are essential for promptly identifying and treating malaria, providing chances to monitor and control its spread effectively. Collaboration among healthcare, policy, and humanitarian sectors is crucial for implementing comprehensive solutions that incorporate enhanced diagnostics, surveillance, and socio-psychological support. Active involvement of the community, usage of Community Health Workers, and regular collection of surveillance data are crucial in increasing awareness, directing control efforts, and tackling the specific difficulties encountered by displaced groups. Moreover, the implementation of environmental management, the incorporation of health services, and the utilization of adaptable healthcare interventions are essential for reducing the effects of malaria. To mitigate the impact of malaria and improve health outcomes among displaced populations in Africa, it is crucial to focus on these specific areas.
  • Socio-economic impact of food insecurity on vulnerable population in Nigeria
    Oyinbolaji Ajetunmobi
Journal of Agriculture Food Systems and Community Development, 2024
First paragraph: Food insecurity is a significant problem in Nigeria, particularly for those living in poverty; vulnerable populations such as children, women, and the elderly are particularly at risk. This commentary explores the multifaceted issue of food insecurity in Nigeria, drawing from both global and local peculiarities in the socio-economic dimensions, and looks at the impact on vulnerable populations and the government’s response. Understanding of and ideas regarding food security have undergone numerous transformations over the past three decades, which are reflected in many official policy perspectives (Clay, 2002; Heidhues et al., 2004). The concept of food security emerged in the mid-1970s, with the World Food Conference in 1974 defining it in terms of the stability and availability of food commodities at both the national and international levels (FAO, 1996, 2006; FAO & DED, 2006). The notion of food security is influenced by four key factors: food availability, affordability, utilization, and sustainability (Titus & Adetokunbo, 2007).

  • Inequitable access to Ebola vaccines and the resurgence of Ebola in Africa: A state of arts review
Toufik Abdul‐Rahman, Lukman Lawal, Emily Meale, Oyinbolaji A. Ajetunmobi, Soyemi Toluwalashe, et al.
    Journal of Medical Virology, 2023
The Ebola virus, a member of the filoviridae family of viruses, is responsible for causing Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) with a case fatality rate as high as 50%. The largest EVD outbreak was recorded in West Africa from March 2013 to June 2016, leading to over 28 000 cases and 11 000 deaths. It affected several countries, including Nigeria, Senegal, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Until then, EVD was predominantly reported in remote villages in central and west Africa close to tropical rainforests. Human mobility, behavioral and cultural norms, the use of bushmeat, burial customs, preference for traditional remedies and treatments, and resistance to health interventions are just a few of the social factors that considerably aid and amplify the risk of transmission. The scale and persistence of recent ebola outbreaks, as well as the risk of widespread global transmission and its ability for bioterrorism, have led to a rethinking of public health strategies to curb the disease, such as the expedition of Ebola vaccine production. However, as vaccine production lags in the subcontinent, among other challenges, the risk of another ebola outbreak is likely and feared by public health authorities in the region. This review describes the inequality of vaccine production in Africa and the resurgence of EVD, emphasizing the significance of health equality.
