Influence of nutritional status on patient-reported outcomes after surgical treatment for chronic venous disease: a comparative study between endovenous laser ablation and combined crossectomy, stripping, and sclerotherapy Vinicius Nicolao Capacia, Raquel Bragança Soares Capacia, Ana Paula Ribeiro, Elias Jirjoss Ilias, Patrícia Colombo-Souza Langenbeck S Archives of Surgery, 2026 PURPOSE: This study investigated the influence of nutritional status on patient-reported outcomes after surgical treatment for chronic venous disease (CVD). It aimed to compare improvements in symptom severity (VEINES-Sym) and quality of life (VEINES-QOL) between endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) and combined crossectomy, stripping, and sclerotherapy (CEEE), with analysis stratified by nutritional status. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study of 157 patients (95 CEEE, 62 EVLA), nutritional status was categorized by body mass index as eutrophic, overweight, or obese. VEINES-Sym and VEINES-QOL scores were collected preoperatively and 30–60 days postoperatively. Statistical analysis used paired t-tests for within-group comparisons, the Kruskal-Wallis test across nutritional strata, and independent t-tests to compare surgical techniques. RESULTS: Both techniques produced significant improvements (p < 0.05) in VEINES-Sym and VEINES-QOL scores across all nutritional categories. Preoperatively, patients with obesity had significantly worse baseline scores. Postoperatively, these differences were no longer significant (p > 0.05), with all groups achieving comparable scores. The magnitude of symptom improvement was similar for both techniques. However, postoperative VEINES-QOL scores were significantly higher in the EVLA group (94.7 ± 9.9) than in the CEEE group (90.5 ± 13.7; p = 0.015). CONCLUSION: Although poorer nutritional status is associated with greater preoperative symptom severity, it does not diminish the significant clinical benefit of surgical intervention. Both CEEE and EVLA effectively improve symptoms and quality of life, enabling all patient groups to attain similar postoperative outcomes.
Effect of gait retraining with visual biofeedback on chronic pain, function and biomechanics parameters in runners with plantar fasciitis: a clinical trial Giovanna Truyts Biscardi Pinto, Marcos Antônio Leite Pereira Pinto, Júlia Constante Souza, Guilherme Silveira Maia, André Luiz Cruz Esteves, Ricardo Cesar Salomão, Gabrielle Souza Oliveira, Peter B. Shull, Ana Paula Ribeiro BMC Sports Science Medicine and Rehabilitation, 2026 BACKGROUND: Plantar fasciitis (PF) affects approximately 2 million individuals per year, affecting approximately 10–25% of runners around the world. It is considered to have a great impact on health, especially due to the pain and functional limitations of the feet and lower limbs. Thus, the objective of this randomized clinical trial was to verify the effect of gait retraining with real-time visual feedback on pain, function, and biomechanical parameters of plantar loading in runners with and without PF. METHODS: Controlled, clinical trial with blinded evaluators. Participants: 24 runners were evaluated and divided into two groups: 12 runners with plantar fasciitis (39.3 years, 78.3 kg, 1.73 cm, 58% male and 42% female) and 12 control runners (40.4 years, 75,1 kg, 1.70 cm, 59% male and 41% female). The assessments were performed pre-intervention and post-intervention. The intervention protocol consisted of gait retraining during treadmill running, for 5 consecutive weeks, over two months (2 sessions/week, 40 min/session, total of 10 sessions). During treadmill running at self-selected and progressively increased speeds (3–12 km/h), participants received real-time visual feedback on vertical ground reaction force and foot support via a front-facing monitor. They were instructed to “run as softly as possible,” encouraging midfoot strike and reducing rearfoot impact. Primary outcomes were: feet pain by visual analogue scale and plantar pressure during gait on the pressure platform. Secondary outcomes were: functionality of the feet and lower limbs, evaluated through the questionnaires: Foot Function Index, Foot and Ankle Ability Measure and Lower Extremity Functional Scale, and the Foot Posture Index. Data were analyzed according to intention-to-treat. RESULTS: Runners with PF presented improvement in pain (p = 0.001, d = 0.92).and physical-functional performance (FFI p = 0.001 d = 0.80; FAAM p = 0.003 d = 0.59; LEFS p = 0.023 d = 0.47), as well as a reduction in plantar overload on the rearfoot (medial p = 0.035 d = 0.57; lateral p = 0.020 d = 0.50) after the intervention protocol when compared to the initial assessment and control, but without difference to FPI (p > 0.005). In relation to the control group, there were no significant differences after intervention in physical-functional performance, but there was a reduction in the loading rate on the rearfoot (medial p = 0.027 d = 0.35; lateral p = 0.024 d = 0.36). CONCLUSION: Gait retraining program using real-time visual biofeedback, 10 sessions over five weeks across two consecutive months, effectively reduced rearfoot plantar pressure and pain, while improving foot and lower limb function in runners with plantar fasciitis. Effect of Rehabilitation Program for Muscle Strength, Balance, and Gait Retraining with Visual Feedback in Older Women with and Without Knee Osteoarthritis: Clinical Trial Tatiane Silva de Souza, Daniel Borges Pereira, Rodrigo Jugue Hagihara, Carolina Tayama Fuzinato, Ana Paula Ribeiro Journal of Personalized Medicine, 2025 Background: Therapeutic exercises have gained great prominence due to the benefits shown in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, to date, there is no evidence on the effects of an exercise program combined with balance and gait training with visual feedback. Objective: To evaluate the therapeutic effect of an intervention program combining lower-limb muscle strengthening, balance training, and gait exercises with visual feedback on the chronic pain, functional, and biomechanical aspects of older women with and without OA knee. Methods: Clinical trials study with stratified allocation based on disease status (two-arm, triple-blind—assessor, interventionist, and data manager, parallel-group). In total, 40 older women were recruited: 20 in the OA knee group (OAG, n = 20) and 20 in the control group (CG, n = 20). The intervention included a muscular resistance training program in the lower limbs, and reactive and proactive balance and gait training associated with visual feedback. Both groups received the same intervention. The primary outcomes were pain measured by the Visual Analogue Scale and the questionnaires Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index and Lequesne Algofunctional Index. The secondary outcomes were the six-minute walk test, the Falls Risk Awareness Questionnaire, the Timed Up and Go Test, plantar load distribution during gait, and patients’ acceptability. Results: The intervention was effective in improving pain and increasing functionality in older women with OA knee, as measured pre- and post-intervention, compared to the control, with a moderate to high effect size. Body balance increased in older women with OA, as indicated by perceptions of fall risk and walk-test pre- and post-intervention. During gait, a reduction in plantar load (midfoot and rearfoot areas) was observed pre- and post-intervention in OAG compared to the CG. Both groups showed excellent acceptability, suitability, and feasibility of the intervention program. Conclusions: The intervention protocol was effective over 2 consecutive months in reducing pain and increasing knee functionality, balance, walking distance, and perception of falls in older women with OA of the knee compared with women without the condition. During gait, when visual feedback was combined with the intervention protocol, it promoted a better distribution of plantar load over the midfoot and the medial and lateral rearfoot regions in older women with knee OA. Clinical Trial: ReBEC (RBR-5w67pz4). Ethics Committee approval (number: 4.091.004).
Treatment of total hip arthroplasty between two surgical access routes associated chronic pain, function and biomechanical parameters in older after osteoporotic femur fracture: cohort study Marco Antônio Leite Pereira Pinto, Giovanna Truyts Biscardi Pinto, Mariana Afonso Ribeiro Sarquis Ude, Claudia Aparecida de Morais, Ana Paula Ribeiro BMC Geriatrics, 2025 BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a surgery widely used to reduce pain, improve function and quality of life in older people after femur fracture due to osteoporosis. The evident success of THA, especially in the long term, continues in relation to the different types of surgical approach, given the little understanding in older people. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effect of THA between two surgical access routes, anterior and posterolateral, on the clinical, functional, and biomechanical parameters of older people after osteoporotic femur fracture. METHODS: Prospective and retrospective cohort study, in which 24 older people with femur fracture, who underwent THA in a Public Hospital, between the years 2020 and 2022, were evaluated. The older people were divided into two groups: THA via anterolateral surgical (n = 12) and THA via posterolateral surgery (n = 12). The following clinical information was collected from the patients' records. After the surgery, pain was evaluated using the visual analogue scale and function by the Harris Hip Score questionnaire, as well as hip and knee mobility (goniometer). For the radiographic parameters, acetabular component positioning, De Lee Zone, and the offset of the femoro-acetabular component were evaluated. A pressure platform was used for the biomechanical assessment of gait and balance. RESULTS: Older adults who underwent THA via the posterolateral route showed a reduction in chronic pain (p = 0.001), and greater functionality (p = 0.001), joint mobility of the hip (flexion and extension, p = < 0,001) and knee (extension) when compared to THA via the anterolateral. In relation to the gait, a reduction in plantar overload on the forefoot (peak pressure p = 0.007) and medial and lateral rearfoot areas (peak pressure p = 0.004 and p = 0.009, respectively; maximum force p = 0.021 and p = 0.015 respectively;) was observed, as well as a reduction in the contact area on the forefoot (p = 0.001) in older people who underwent THA by the posterolateral when compared to the anterolateral. An increase in body sway (p = 0.002) and medio-lateral sway (p = 0.020) was observed in older adults who underwent THA using the posterolateral route when compared to the anterolateral route, such as distance and velocity balance (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Total hip arthroplasty via the posterolateral approach proved to be more successful when associated with reducing chronic pain, improving functional parameters and hip joint mobility, as well as facilitating a more efficient gait pattern with lower rates of plantar overload and enhanced body balance in older adults undergoing total hip arthroplasty after osteoporotic femur fracture. These findings are clinically relevant as they indicate that this approach not only provides significant pain relief but also improves the patients' quality of life by restoring hip functionality and mobility, while reducing the risk of falls and complications related to postural imbalance. The combination of these benefits suggests that the posterolateral approach could be a preferred option for elderly patients with osteoporotic fractures, aiming to optimize postoperative outcomes and improve long-term functional recovery.
Mitigation of detraining effects: physical activity improves protein profile and physical function of aged amid COVID-19 Renato Jimenez Gomez, Fernanda Rodrigues Monteiro, Angélica Rodrigues Botelho, Ariane Nardy, Fernanda Cristina da Silva, Millena Soares de Almeida, Vitória Paixão, Brenda Rodrigues Silva, Marcelo Rossi, Jônatas Bussador do Amaral, Gislene Rocha Amirato, Carlos André Freitas Santos, Guilherme Eustáquio Furtado, Rodolfo de Paula Vieira, Ana Paula Ribeiro, Luiz Henrique da Silva Nali, André Luis Lacerda Bachi BMC Geriatrics, 2025 Aim We investigated the impact of abrupt interruption, imposed by COVID-19, and subsequent resumption of regular practice of a combined exercise training program on protein, renal profile, and physical functional capacity in physically active older adults before the pandemic. Methods Thirty-five volunteers (mean age 64.36 ± 19.43 years) participated, with data collected before the COVID-19 pandemic (PRE), 12 months after social isolation (PAN, detraining period), and 10 months after returning to regular exercise (POST). Results In the POST period, both older women (n = 26) and men (n = 9) exhibited higher serum levels of albumin and total protein (p < 0.0001 for albumin and total proteins in older women group; p = 0.0033 for albumin and p = 0.0002 for total proteins in older men group) compared to PRE and PAN. Older women showed, both at PAN and POST, elevated serum creatinine levels (p = 0.0309; p = 0.0003, respectively) and Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT) values (p = 0.0096; p = 0.0013, respectively), along with decreased estimated creatinine clearance in PAN (p = 0.0132; p = 0.0005, respectively) compared to PRE. Additionally, older women demonstrated lower gait speed (p = 0.0210) and muscle strength (p = 0.0002) in POST compared to PAN and PRE. Older men exhibited higher serum creatinine levels and estimated creatinine clearance in POST compared to PRE. Significant correlations between biochemical parameters, estimated creatinine clearance, and physical functional tests were observed, particularly in older women. Conclusions Overall, the study suggests that resuming combined exercise training partially mitigated the detraining-induced impairment in metabolic and physical capacities among older adults.
Nutritional profile and food consumption of the riverside community assisted by the Humanitarian Assistance Program Doutores das Águas Patrícia Colombo-Souza, Julia de Macedo Moura Silva, Bruna da Silva Miranda, Ana Paula Ribeiro, Marco Antonio Zonta Preventive Medicine Reports, 2025 To analyze the nutritional profile and its correlation with food consumption patterns among riverside communities in Roraima and Amazonas states. A cross-sectional study (April 2019) was performed, including 160 adults from 120 families across 12 communities. Data collection combined 24-h dietary recalls, food frequency questionnaires, and anthropometric measurements. The Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance was applied using IBM SPSS V.28 software. Nutrient intake was analyzed and compared to Dietary Reference Intakes using AVANUTRI software. The sample (60.6 % female, mean age 40.9 years) showed a 59.6 % prevalence of overweight/obesity. Diets were high in oils (1.7 L/person/month) and sugar (2.78 kg/person/month), exceeding recommendations by 30–33 %, while fiber intake was critically low (10.9 g/day). Micronutrient deficiencies (vitamins A, C, D, iron, zinc) were widespread. Despite high consumption of ultra-processed foods, caloric and macronutrient intake did not differ significantly by BMI ( p > 0.05). Riverside communities face a dual burden of obesity and micronutrient deficiencies, driven by declining traditional diets and increasing ultra-processed food dependence. Culturally adapted interventions are urgently needed to enhance dietary diversity, reduce consumption of processed foods, and bolster local food security. • High obesity/overweight (59.6 %) with micronutrient deficiencies and food insecurity. • Caloric excess and critical nutrient shortfalls fracture the local food system. • Critically low fiber intake (10.9 g/d) amid traditional foods decline. • High ultra-processed food consumption: 89.2 % sweets/sodas, 58.4 % meats. Geographic isolation forces reliance on nutrient-poor, non-perishable foods. • Higher obesity in women (23.2 %) than men (17.5 %) reflects gendered roles.
Effect of Abdominal Adiposity on the Impact of Plantar Force in the Foot Support of Obese and Overweight Schoolchildren Ana Paula Ribeiro, Daniel Borges Pereira, Gabrielle Fontura Berger, Kemely Muraiber Ismail, Maitê Duarte Morais, Mayara Slaiman Fares Martins Children, 2025 Background: Childhood obesity is a growing global concern associated with early-onset orthopedic complications that may persist into adulthood. Among the anthropometric indicators, abdominal adiposity plays a key role in assessing health risks during pediatric evaluations. However, the relationship between abdominal fat distribution and biomechanical alterations, such as changes in posture and foot support, remains poorly understood. Ultrasonography (US) is a validated, noninvasive imaging method capable of distinguishing preperitoneal and intraperitoneal fat in children. Despite its diagnostic advantages, no study to date has directly examined ultrasound-measured abdominal adiposity-predicted pronated foot posture in children. Objective: We aimed to verify the impact of abdominal adiposity on foot support and its association with obese, overweight, and eutrophic schoolchildren. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Sixty-five pupils (aged 6–9 years) from a public school in São Paulo, Brazil, were divided into three groups according to nutritional status: obese (n = 25), overweight (n = 20), and eutrophic (n = 20). Anthropometric measurements and foot posture, assessed using the Foot Posture Index (FPI), were collected during the initial evaluation. Abdominal adiposity was determined by ultrasonography, measuring subcutaneous, preperitoneal, and intraperitoneal fat thickness. Statistical Analysis: Analyses compared group differences and relations between abdominal fat and foot posture, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Obese and overweight schoolchildren showed pronated foot posture when compared to eutrophic children, on both sides of the feet. Abdominal adiposity was a good predictor of a more pronated footrest for the right and left feet, showing a high-to-moderate association. Conclusions: Ultrasound-measured abdominal adiposity was identified as a significant predictor of pronated foot posture in schoolchildren. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring abdominal fat accumulation during pediatric evaluations, as excessive adiposity may increase the risk of musculoskeletal dysfunctions and pain in the lower limbs. Early detection of these alterations may help prevent postural and musculoskeletal disorders in overweight and obese children.
Historical Perspective of Homeopathy in the Brazilian Public Health System Fernanda Maria Simões da Costa Fujino, Jane de Eston Armond, Ana Paula Ribeiro, Patrícia Colombo de Souza Homeopathy, 2025 Homeopathy was introduced in Brazil with the French doctor Benoît Jules Mure's arrival in 1840 and was officially recognised in 1980 as a medical specialty by Brazilian regulatory authorities. Public health policies played an important role in incorporating homeopathy into the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), emphasising homeopathy's coherence with SUS's fundamental principles and with other national health policies. Homeopathy is supported by the guidelines of the National Primary Health Care Policy and the National Policy on Integrative and Complementary Practices, and its offer in the SUS has been recognised since 2006. Challenges persist, however, such as the low prevalence of the use of homeopathy, lack of investment in professional training and under-reporting of homeopathy outpatient appointments. Investments in disseminating information on homeopathic philosophy and raising awareness among managers and health professionals are essential to strengthen its presence in the Brazilian public health system.
Homeopathy as a Means to Improve Quality of Life Fernanda Maria Simões da Costa Fujino, Ana Paula Ribeiro, Jane de Eston Armond, Patrícia Colombo de Souza Homeopathy, 2025 Quality of life is a fundamental aspect of good health and differs from person to person, highlighting the importance of individualisation, which is one of the principles of homeopathic doctrine. Homeopathy aligns with the principles of the Brazilian public health system, reflecting the latter's ethos of universality, accessibility, care coordination, and comprehensiveness, offering a whole-person approach to health care. Homeopathy's individualised approach and expanded view of the health–disease process, with emphasis on healthy lifestyle guidance, contributes to the promotion of individual good health and quality of life. These attributes of homeopathy make it a valuable therapeutic option, with relevance to the health service of Brazil as well as to that of other countries across the world.
