Bibliometric and visual analysis of the use of complementary and alternative medicine in the mental health of older adults Francisco Tiago de Vasconcelos, Christina César Praça Brasil, Ana Paula Vasconcellos Abdon, Francisco Aquiles de Oliveira Caetano, Thiago Medeiros da Costa Daniele Holistic Approaches to Health Recovery, 2025 This chapter explores the growing interest in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) for managing mental health issues among elderly individuals. The bibliographic search was conducted in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database in March 2024. We included studies published in English from January 1, 2003, to December 31, 2023. This chapter investigates CAM's contribution to the mental well-being of older adults. Despite increasing research on CAM, findings reveal that the global integration of these practices remains limited and undervalued. The analysis identified the main trends, including the concentration of studies in the USA, China, and the UK, and highlighted gaps in Brazilian research and international collaboration. The chapter underscored the need for broader recognition of CAM in public health, emphasizing its potential as a low-cost, effective strategy to enhance mental health in aging populations.
Evaluation of cervical posture and smartphone use in young adults Ticiana Mesquita de Oliveira Fontenele, Lorena Karen Silva Magalhães Rabelo, Nylla Kettilla Freitas Diógenes Medeiros, Natália Roque Maia de Sousa, Daniela Gardano Bucharles Mont’Alverne, et al. Fisioterapia Em Movimento, 2024 Introduction The smartphone, a popular mobile device, has become attractive because it is easy to use and due to it multifunctionality. Its prolonged use, with anterior flexion of the neck and repetitive movements of the upper limbs, contributes to musculoskeletal symptoms. Objective To evaluate changes in cervical posture due to smartphone use in adults, as well as verify the association of posture with health-related factors. Methods Cross-sectional study, carried out at two universities in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brasil, between 2018 and 2019. A total of 769 adults (>18 years old) who routinely used smartphones participated. Data on socioeconomic variables, health conditions and smartphone use were collected. The cervical postural alignment was assessed, with the vertical head alignment (VHA) being measured using photogrammetry, in the anatomical position (baseline) and while typing on the smartphone. Results The mean age was 23 years (± 6.7), with a higher proportion of females (72.1%; n = 559) and an average of 7.9h (± 4.4) using the device. Smartphone use led to the forward head movement related to males (p < 0.05 by ΔVHA), time spent using the device (p < 0.05 by ΔVHA), functional disability in the cervical region (p < 0.05 by ΔVHA) and not sleeping well (p = 0.019 by ΔVHA on the R side). Conclusion Using a smartphone in the typing position causes the head to tilt forward, being related to longer usage time, male gender, cervical region dysfunction and sleep.
EXPLORING THE INTERSECTION OF WORK, RACE, AND AGING IN THE LIVES OF ELDERLY BLACK WOMEN Thiago Medeiros Da Costa Daniele, Larissa Oliveira Nascimento, Ana Paula Vasconcellos Abdon, Ianny Celly da Silva Leandro, Letticia de Araújo Moura, et al. New Trends in Qualitative Research, 2024 This study explores the intersectional challenges faced by elderly Black women living in peripheral communities in northeastern Brazil. These women severeal obstacles stemming from their race, gender, age and socioeconomic status. How do elderly Black women perceive the effects of racism, sexism, and ageism on their lived experiences, particularly in relation to health, social interactions, and labor market participation? Objective: To analyze their perceptions of the aging process, focusing on the invisible scars left on their bodies and lives by systemic inequalities. This qualitative study employs thematic analysis to explore the lived experiences of Brazilian Black elderly women living in a peripheral community. Twenty voluntaries, aged 60 to 84, participated in the study. Data collection included narrative interviews based on the Oral History method. The data revealed three main themes: "Stories of Struggle and Overcoming", "Symbols of Resistance" and “Work and Economic Contributions”. These narratives highlighted the impact of structural racism and ageism on the women’s self-perception, well-being, and identity. While the women often faced marginalization and discrimination, their stories also reflected immense strength and a commitment to passing on resilience to future generations. the study shows the importance of addressing the needs of elderly Black women through public policies aimed at education, health and social inclusion. Their experiences shows a critical idea into the broader struggles of marginalized communities in Brazil, emphasizing the need for systemic change to promote equality and justice.
Smartphone addiction and postural alterations in the cervical region in adolescents Ticiana Mesquita de Oliveira Fontenele, Paula Pessoa de Brito Nunes, Francisco Valter Miranda Silva, Catarina Nívea Bezerra Menezes, Rodrigo Fragoso de Andrade, et al. Revista Paulista De Pediatria, 2024 Objective: To evaluate smartphone addiction and postural alterations in the cervical region in adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study with 281 adolescents (15 to 19 years old), attending the 1st to the 3rd grades of High School, carried out between September and October 2019 in the city of Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. Data collection took place in two stages. In the first, they answered four self-administered questionnaires: sociodemographic questionnaire, health conditions and smartphone use, Nordic Musculoskeletal Symptom Questionnaire (NMQ), Self-Report Questionnaire (SRQ-20) and the Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI-BR). In the second stage, they were submitted to photogrammetry using the Postural Assessment Software (SAPO) and anthropometric assessment (weight and height). The software SPSS Statistics version 23.0 was used for data analysis. Results: Of the total number of adolescents, 63.3% (n=178) showed smartphone addiction, using it for 5.8 hours (±3.5) during the week and 8.7 (±4.0) hours on the weekend. When analyzing postural alignment in the anterior view, a significant reduction in the lateral head tilt was observed when typing on the smartphone (p=0.002) compared to the anatomical position (baseline). In the lateral view, an increase in head anteriorization was observed during smartphone use (p<0.05). There was an association between smartphone addiction and head anteriorization (p<0.05). Conclusions: The use of the smartphone in the typing position causes postural alterations in the cervical region, especially in adolescents with smartphone addiction. Therefore, health promotion measures that alert adolescents to the adverse effects caused by prolonged smartphone use are necessary.

Effect of unilateral bag use on plantar pressures and static balance in women Amanda de Oliveira Toledo, Bárbara Karen Matos Magalhães Rodrigues, Mariza Araújo Marinho Maciel, Pedro Olavo de Paula Lima, Maximiliano Aguiar Porto, et al. Fisioterapia Em Movimento, 2023 Introduction: The increasing insertion of women into the labor market has created a need to adapt handbags, with different sizes and weights, which consequently can overload the musculoskeletal system. Objective: To evaluate the effect of using a unilateral bag on plantar pressures and static balance in women. Methods: Cross-sectional study, carried out in Fortaleza in 2018. 258 women aged between 18 and 59 years who used a unilateral bag participated in this study. Two questionnaires were applied, targeting sociodemographic variables, life habits, characteristics of bag use and level of physical activity. Height, scapular symmetry, body and bag mass were also measured. A baropodometer was used to assess plantar pressure and static balance with and without the unilateral bag. Independent and paired t-tests were applied to verify the influence of the bag on the variables of interest, using the SPSS Statistics program (version 23.0). Results: On the side where the bag was carried, an increase in lateral mass distribution (LMD), foot pressure and surface area, and a decrease in the distance from barycenter (p < 0.05) were observed. On the opposite side, a decrease in LMD and an increase in barycenter were detected (p < 0.05). In static balance, no differences were observed in the anteroposterior and side-to-side oscillations with bag placement (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The unilateral bag causes alterations in plantar pressures and ipsilateral barycenter alongside the use of the bag, being a risk factor or aggravation for dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system and for the occurrence of pain.
