Voluntary presenteeism: through the lens of employee engagement Preeti S. Rawat, Shiji S. Lyndon, Shivali Darvekar International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management, 2025 PurposeThe purpose of the study is to give a new perspective to presenteeism. Traditionally, there are two approaches to it. In our study, we have tried to empirically prove that there is a third approach to looking at presenteeism from the lens of employee engagement.Design/methodology/approachThe research design used a mixed-method approach and was carried out in two parts. In Part I of the study, survey research was carried out to study presenteeism. In part II, a vignette on presenteeism was designed to study whether respondents exhibit presenteeism more in a crisis than other modes of handling the situation.FindingsThe findings from Study 1 showed that high employee engagement led to high presenteeism. Study 2 showed that in crisis situation employee engagement led to voluntary presenteeism in the form of work–from–home as the most preferred response.Research limitations/implicationsThe study's limitations were the small sample size and cross-sectional survey research design. The same was offset by using the vignette study to show the relationship between employee engagement and presenteeism.Practical implicationsVoluntary presenteeism is different from forced presenteeism and often is a mark of engaged behaviour of employees.Social implicationsIf work-from-home when sick is managed correctly and supported with adequate resources, attending work during illness can benefit health and performance in the long run.Originality/valueThe study provides a unique perspective on presenteeism in general and voluntary presenteeism in particular.

The Mediating Role of Leader–Member Exchange and Ingratiation in the Relationship Between Self-Monitoring and Job Satisfaction: A Mixed Method Study Preeti S. Rawat, Shiji Lyndon, Ajinkya Navare, Stuti Bhatt, Vaishali Modak Fiib Business Review, 2025 The purpose of the study was to understand how followers as self-monitors use ingratiation for stronger leader–member exchange (LMX) leading to job satisfaction. The study attempts to show that in an interpersonal setting, the followers will actively attempt to have strong LMX with the leader, and ingratiation will be a useful tool. The research design used concurrent mixed method approach for the triangulation of results. The quantitative study using PROCESS MACRO (model 6) and a sample size of 405 showed serial mediation of ingratiation and LMX. The qualitative study using thematic analysis (sample size = 47) showed that subordinates actively indulge in LMX for stronger bonding with the leader. Triangulation with the qualitative data was added to the methodological rigour in the study. The practical implications of the study lie in looking at the relationship from a followership perspective as to how subordinates, using ingratiation and strong LMX, would enjoy proximity to the leader and greater organizational visibility. The study is unique because first it studies LMX from a subordinate’s perspective’ and second, because it studies self-monitoring which is less researched than other personality dimensions.
The sexual identity disclosure dilemma for lesbian, gay, and bisexual employees in the Indian workplace Shiji Lyndon, Preeti S. Rawat, Ketan Bhardwaj, Ajinkya Navare Equality Diversity and Inclusion, 2023 PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to extend the theoretical understanding of the disclosure dilemma experienced by lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) employees. The study focuses on examining the factors related to self-disclosure such as co-worker support and fear of disclosure. Further, the study also aims at testing the impact of coworker support on the psychological well-being of LGB employees.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopts a concurrent triangulation research design, which involves a simultaneous collection of quantitative and qualitative data. Using a survey questionnaire, data from 200 LGB employees were collected. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 10 LGB employees. The qualitative findings were treated as complementary to the relationship tested through the quantitative method.FindingsQuantitative results reveal that co-worker support positively impacts self-disclosure by LGB employees. And the fear of disclosure mediates the relationship between coworker support and self-disclosure. Further, self-disclosure is positively related to psychological well-being. The qualitative study brings insights from the lived experiences around these factors. This research expands knowledge about the factors associated with the disclosure of LGB employees.Originality/valueThe study examines the factors related to the disclosure of sexual identity and the experiences of the dilemma of LGB employees in the workplace. Most of the studies in the context of LGB have adopted a quantitative research design. The current study adopts a mixed methods approach with a concurrent triangulation research design.
