ANALYSING THE ROUTE CHOICES TO ACCESS PUBLIC OPEN SPACES IN HILL CITIES USING SPACE SYNTAX APPROACH Vicky Lalramsangi, Yogesh Kumar Garg, Shashikant Nishant Sharma Journal of Environmental Engineering and Landscape Management, 2026 Public open spaces serve as vital components of urban well-being, offering spaces for recreation, social interaction, and environmental balance. In hill cities, however, the steep terrain and irregular street networks create distinctive challenges for pedestrian accessibility and route selection. This study investigates how users navigate and choose routes to access public open spaces (POS) in the hill city of Aizawl, Mizoram, employing the space syntax approach to analyze spatial configuration and pedestrian movement patterns. By examining route connectivity, visual integration, and topographic influence, the study identifies how spatial hierarchy and elevation differences affect pedestrian safety, comfort, and decision-making. The analysis inte-grates spatial metrics with field observations to reveal critical barriers and preferred pathways that influence accessibility and user experience. The findings highlight the need for designing safe, inclusive, and topographically sensitive pedestrian networks that enhance access to public open spaces. Ultimately, this research advances the discourse on three-dimensional urban morphology in hill cities and provides actionable insights for planners to improve pedestrian mobility and spatial equity in complex urban terrains.
Agentic Decision-Making and Road Safety: Designing Explainable, Fail-Safe Architectures for Autonomous Vehicles Shashikant Nishant Sharma Agentic AI for Autonomous Vehicles Safety Reliability Law and Ethics, 2026 This chapter examines how autonomous vehicles can evolve into agentic, human-aligned decision-making systems capable of operating safely within complex traffic environments. It synthesizes advances in perception, prediction, planning, ethical reasoning, explainable AI, and fail-safe engineering to present a unified architecture for accountable autonomous mobility. Emphasis is placed on designing resilient, transparent, and ethically grounded AV decision pipelines that mitigate uncertainty, anticipate human behavior, and prevent cascading failures. The chapter further identifies gaps in existing AV safety, reliability, and governance frameworks and proposes an integrative model that strengthens road safety outcomes while supporting future research, regulatory development, and industry implementation.
Precarious Urbanism: Housing Vulnerability and Spatial Inequality in Informal Settlements of the Global South Shashikant Nishant Sharma Housing Vulnerability and Disaster Risk in the Global South, 2026 This chapter examines housing vulnerability and spatial inequality in informal settlements across the Global South through the lens of precarious urbanism. Rapid urbanization, limited affordable housing, and weak planning systems have driven the expansion of informal settlements, many of which are located in environmentally hazardous areas and lack basic infrastructure and secure tenure. The chapter synthesizes recent research to explain how land markets, governance structures, and environmental risks interact to produce cumulative vulnerabilities in marginalized urban spaces. Particular attention is given to climate-related hazards, everyday environmental risks, and unequal access to services. While emphasizing structural drivers of vulnerability, the chapter also highlights the role of community agency, participatory planning, and incremental housing improvements in strengthening resilience. The chapter concludes by outlining policy directions focused on inclusive governance, tenure security, in-situ upgrading, and climate-resilient infrastructure for equitable urban development.
Advances in AI-Based Mobility Modelling: Toward Intelligent Transport Infrastructure in Smart Cities Shashikant Nishant Sharma, Kavita Dehalwar AI Based Data Mobility and Intelligent Modeling for Smart Cities, 2026 To build smart cities, we need to completely change how we design, run, and manage transportation systems in cities. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a game-changing tool that enables us to model human movement, enhance transportation networks, and predict travel patterns with unprecedented accuracy. This chapter gives a thorough overview of the most recent developments in AI-based mobility modeling, with a focus on how transportation has changed from traditional methods to smart, dynamic, and data-driven infrastructures. It examines how AI methods, such as machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning, are applied in transportation systems to enhance real-time decision-making, traffic forecasting, demand-responsive services, and autonomous driving. The chapter also discusses the most pressing problems, moral issues, and future directions for integrating AI into urban transportation systems to create smart, sustainable, inclusive, and resilient cities.
Measures to Manage the Urban Water Quality for Public Health Shashikant Nishant Sharma, Kavita Dehalwar, Ashutosh Kumar Pandey Environmentalism in Healthcare Caring for Tomorrow Ecologically, 2026 Urban water quality management is paramount for promoting good public health in urban areas. The rapid urbanization and increasing population density pose significant challenges to maintaining clean and safe water supplies. This chapter focuses on the strategies and approaches employed in urban water quality management to ensure safe drinking water and protect public health. Community engagement and public awareness campaigns are essential in fostering responsible water use, pollution prevention, and adopting sustainable practices. It also examines the role of urban planning and infrastructure development in minimizing pollution sources and protecting water resources. Case studies from urban areas in Delhi are presented to illustrate water quality management practices and highlight lessons learned. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for integrated and holistic urban water quality management approaches. This involves addressing not only the treatment of contaminated water but also the prevention of pollution at its source through sustainable urban planning, wastewater management, and pollution control measures. In conclusion, urban water quality management is critical in promoting good public health in urban areas.
