Due to their electroconductive properties, flexible open-cell polyurethane foam/silver nanowire (PUF/AgNW) structures can provide an alternative for the construction of cheap pressure transducers with limited lifetimes or used as filter media for air conditioning units, presenting bactericidal and antifungal properties. In this paper, highly electroconductive metal-polymer hybrid foams (MPHFs) based on AgNWs were manufactured and characterized. The electrical resistance of MPHFs with various degrees of AgNW coating was measured during repeated compression. For low degrees of AgNW coating, the decrease in electrical resistance during compression occurs in steps and is not reproducible with repeated compression cycles due to the reduced number of electroconductive zones involved in obtaining electrical conductivity. For high AgNW coating degrees, the decrease in resistance is quasi-linear and reproducible after the first compression cycle. However, after compression, cracks appear in the foam cell structure, which increases the electrical resistance and decreases the mechanical strength. It can be considered that PUFs coated with AgNWs have a compression memory effect and can be used as cheap solutions in industrial processes in which high precision is not required, such as exceeding a maximum admissible load or as ohmic seals for product security.

Four alcoholic extracts from Romanian Cruciferous species—cabbage, acclimatized broccoli, black radish and cauliflower—were obtained in a microwave field. The extracts showed good and symmetric antioxidant activity (0.97–1.13 mmol/L TE) and good phenolic content (1001–1632 mg GAE/L). For the HPLC method, the limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantitation (LOQ) and recovery degree were established. The small values of LOD and LOQ indicated a great fit of data. The HPLC method achieved satisfactory quantitative recoveries in the range of 96%–122%, except for the lowest sinigrin concentration (8.774 µg/mL). The presence of metals in the studied extracts falls within the allowed limits. The four Cruciferous extracts showed good and slightly asymmetric antibacterial activities against some Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including strains with known resistance to antibiotics. Moreover, greater inhibitory effects were exhibited against Gram-negative bacteria. Asymmetrically, no inhibition was observed on the fungal strains. Therefore, the present results may suggest that some alcoholic extract formulas of cabbage and black radish (presenting good antibacterial activity) might be helpful in the antimicrobial fight and could be successfully used on selected cases and strains.

The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK-ULAKBIM) - DIGITAL COMMONS JOURNALS
In this work, a new method for the growth of large CdS crystals into PdS/ZnS--CdS-type photocatalysts is presented. In order to accomplish this, in the first stage zinc sulphide was synthesised and hydrothermally crystallised. In the second stage, after PdS decoration, the recrystallised zinc sulphide was utilised as sulphur source for the synthesis of PdS/ZnS--CdS-type photocatalysts. The photocatalysts were characterised by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. In the third stage magnetic polymer supports were manufactured and loaded with photocatalyst. Finally photocatalysis experiments under blue light illumination were conducted for the hydrogen evolution reaction in the presence of sulphite and sulphide ions on both suspension and polymer supported photocatalysts. The photocatalysts' efficiency increased by about 70% along with the PdS quantity increase from 0.11% to 0.89%. The use of magnetic polymer may be a solution for reducing the costs necessary to maintain the photocatalysts in suspension.

With the ever present-to-future need of renewable energy the main features of photo-electrochemistry processes are reviewed and described from the perspective of devices phenomenology serving to sustainable design of photovoltaics, while providing the quantum insight in terms of data observability and interpretation. At the same time, the photovoltaic cell “enriched” with quantum dots is presented as a “milestone for obtaining green energy”, a perspective opened by the developing of recent nanotechnology. Nevertheless, this new approach is referring to both theoretical and experimental aspects, both equally needed in order to find a way to develop efficient and ecological photovoltaic devices. Finally, bondonic information for molecules activated in mesoscopic scale are determined while combining their FT-IR spectra with photovoltaic fill factor and metrological quantum triangle (electron tunneling, Josephson effect and quantum Hall effect) towards challenging new perspective of sub-quantum interaction in condensed nano-matter.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study is the enhancement of the electrical properties of thin films obtained from silver nanowires (AgNWs) deposited on a flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) support. First, AgNWs were obtained by the “polyol” liquid phase synthesis method in the presence of chloride ions. After purification, the AgNWs were successively deposited on a flexible support of PET by doctor blade method. To improve the adhesion of the AgNWs coating to the substrate, thin films of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) were interposed between the layer of AgNWs and PET substrate. The properties of the thin films have been studied depending on the number of AgNWs layers and heat treatment procedure. Characterization of pure AgNWs as well as of AgNWs/PMMA/PET structures has been carried out by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and scanning probe microscopy. The sheet resistance of the transparent conducting films was determined by four point probe measurement. Best results in terms of homogenous conductance across the film and optical transmittance have been obtained for samples prepared by deposition of four successive layers of AgNWs. Further heat treatment improved the conductivity of AgNWs on the PMMA/PET substrate. For these films, the sheet resistance decreased from 41.25 to 29.55 Ω/sq after 40 min of heat treatment in air at 150°C.
