Meanings and Practices of Swaddling (qillpu) in Infant Care in Andean Communities Edgar Gutiérrez-Gómez, Roxana Rojas-Montes, Sonia Beatriz Munaris-Parco, Roly Auccatoma-Tinco, Adolfo Quispe-Arroyo, et al. Societies, 2026 Swaddling, known in Quechua as qillpu, is an ancestral practice still in use in Andean communities, linked to cultural conceptions of health, protection, and appropriate ways of raising babies. The objective of the research was to analyze the sociocultural meanings and practices associated with qillpu, as well as the tensions that arise in relation to conventional medicine in the field of childhood. A qualitative ethnographic approach was used, involving in-depth interviews with mothers, participant observation, and interpretive analysis of the discourses collected in Andean communities. The results show that swaddling is perceived as a comprehensive care strategy that promotes rest, bodily symmetry, and the physical and spiritual protection of the child. The testimonies legitimize its use in the face of accusations of abuse, emphasizing its temporary and functional nature. It is concluded that the qillpu maintains a solid symbolic and practical relevance, and therefore its analysis requires an intercultural dialogue that articulates ancestral knowledge with biomedical approaches.
The Female Orality of the Harawi as an Expression of Memory and Cultural Resistance Edgar Gutiérrez-Gómez, Rocío Laime-Huallpa, Rubén Darío Alania-Contreras, Aldo Bazán-Ramírez, Daniela Isabel Dayan Ortega-Révolo, et al. Genealogy, 2026 The female oral tradition of harawi constitutes a living cultural expression in Quechua-speaking Andean communities, where song is configured as an instrument of collective memory and identity. This study aimed to understand how women, through harawi, construct spaces of cultural resistance in the face of processes of forgetting and social transformation. A qualitative approach was adopted, using an ethnographic and phenomenological design. Data collection was conducted over a period of one hundred and twenty days through semi-structured interviews, participant and non-participant observation, audiovisual recording, and documentary review. The findings show that harawi not only preserves ancestral knowledge but also strengthens female identity and the intergenerational transmission of the Quechua language. Subtle forms of symbolic resistance to linguistic and cultural stigmatization were identified. It is concluded that female harawi oral tradition constitutes a mechanism of living memory and an active practice of cultural affirmation in Andean communities.
The Sacredness of Pampapu as a Religious Healing Ritual in the Andean Worldview Edgar Gutiérrez-Gómez, Nilda Quispe-Flores, Roly Auccatoma-Tinco, Sonia Beatriz Munaris-Parco, Rubén Darío Alania-Contreras, et al. Religions, 2026 This work focuses on the study of traditional Andean therapeutic knowledge of spirituality, understood as current practices that articulate health, territory, and sacredness. In a setting invaded by modernity and conventional medicine, Pampapu survives as a healing ritual that expresses a symbolic and spiritual relationship with the Earth and Andean deities. The objective is to understand the religious, cultural, and symbolic meanings that the inhabitants attribute to this ritual. It was carried out using qualitative research methods with an ethnographic and interpretive approach, based on participant observation and in-depth interviews with traditional healers, older adults, and patients’ families. Thematic and hermeneutic analysis confirmed categories such as sacredness, illness of the Earth, generational transmission, and religious syncretism. The results show that the ritual fulfills therapeutic functions, identity, and social cohesion, and is transmitted through generations. It is concluded that this practice constitutes a living expression of the Andean religious worldview and an essential component of intangible cultural heritage.
