Impact of renewable and non-renewable energy, trade openness, GDP, and urbanization on C02 emissions: a panel study of CEE countries Shailender Singh, Chandrashekhar J. Rawandale, Meenakshi Kaul International Journal of Energy Sector Management, 2026 Purpose The growing concern over climate change mitigation has caught the interest of researchers to explore the impact of energy consumption and growth in income on CO2 emissions. This study aims to examine the effect of renewable and nonrenewable energy, trade openness, gross domestic product (GDP) and urbanization on CO2 emissions in Central and Eastern Europe. Design/methodology/approach This research uses panel data for 12 countries of Central and Eastern Europe from 1990 to 2020 and analyses how renewable and nonrenewable energy consumption, per capita GDP, trade openness and urbanization affect CO2 emissions using DF–generalized method of moments (GMM) and one-step system GMM methods. Findings The findings highlight that renewable energy consumption, per capita GDP and rapid urbanization have significant effects on CO2 emissions growth across the countries studied. Notably, the rise in renewable energy consumption has a more substantial impact on CO2 emissions growth compared to nonrenewable energy consumption. However, the study finds no significant evidence that nonrenewable energy is associated with reduced CO2 emissions growth. Thus, promoting renewable energy consumption could lead to a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions growth in these countries. Originality/value This study is the first attempt to evaluate the combined impact of renewable and nonrenewable energy, trade openness, GDP and urbanization on CO2 emissions in the context of Central and Eastern Europe.
Can green energy curb emissions? Evidence from 11 Central European and Baltic Countries Muhammad Muazu Bala, Shailender Singh, Aminu Hassan Jakada International Journal of Energy Sector Management, 2026 Purpose This study aims to investigate the relationship between carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, energy consumption and aggregate output growth in Central European and Baltic countries, where the dynamics of eco-friendly growth remain underexplored. The objective is to provide region-specific evidence to guide sustainable energy and environmental policy formulation. Design/methodology/approach Using panel data from 11 countries over the period 1990–2020, this study applies the cross-sectionally augmented autoregressive distributed lag model to capture both short- and long-term dynamics while accounting for cross-sectional dependence and heterogeneity. Findings The results show that renewable energy consumption significantly reduces CO2 emissions, whereas nonrenewable energy use increases emissions. Aggregate output, trade openness and urbanization exert limited influence on emission reduction. At the country level, nonrenewable energy contributes to higher emissions in six countries, while renewable energy improves environmental outcomes in five countries. Practical implications The findings underscore the need for policymakers to expand renewable energy infrastructure by offering tax incentives, financial support for green technologies and fostering public–private partnerships aimed at transitioning toward low-carbon economies. Originality/value This study contributes to the scarce empirical literature on the environmental implications of energy consumption in Central and Baltic Europe by using a robust panel estimation technique and providing nuanced, country-level evidence that informs sustainable energy transition strategies in the region.
An analysis of health facility services readiness for non-communicable diseases in 8 LMICs in the universal health coverage era Shailender Singh, Meenakshi Kaul, Chandrashekhar J Rawandale Health Promotion Perspectives, 2024 Background: The readiness of health facility services for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is a critical aspect of global health infrastructure. NCDs, such as cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes, pose significant challenges to public health systems worldwide. This study assesses health facility services readiness for NCDs in 8 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Methods: The data is collected using stratified random sampling method with a sample size of 7606 health facilities, the study assesses the health facility services readiness index for general and disease–specific health services by using the survey data from service provision assessment (SPA) between 2015 to 2021 for eight countries under the study. This service readiness index represents the percentage of items considered essential for providing general and specific health services issued by the World Health Organisation. Results: The mean values of the service readiness index at 95% confidence interval are 56.2%, 37.7%, 35.4%, and 36.5% for the general health services, diabetes, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases, respectively. These results show substantial variations range from 1% to 20 % in the service readiness index by health facility types in the countries of this study. Overall, public facilities have achieved a higher service readiness index score and, thus, have demonstrated a greater level of preparation in providing general and disease–specific health services for chronic non–communicable diseases. Conclusion: A substantial number of health facilities in these countries are not adequately prepared to care for chronic NCDs. More investment in critical health infrastructure is urgently needed to strengthen the capacity of health systems in the countries of this study. The investment should focus on achieving universal health coverage (UHC) goals vis-à-vis reducing the burden of premature mortality from chronic diseases.
