  • Simulation study of pulse width modulation schemes for three-phase impedance source inverter
Mohammad Arif Khan and Shailesh Kumar Gupta

Institute of Advanced Engineering and Science
To avoid a short circuit of the input direct current (DC). source, a 3-phase inverter cannot run two switches in the same leg at a time, and it always operates in buck mode, with the output voltage being less than the input voltage. The Impedance source inverter features a feature that allows both switches in one leg to operate at the same time, and it can operate in buck/boost mode, which means the output voltage can be greater than the input voltage depending on the shoot-through time. In the literature, there are a few pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques for Impedance source inverter control. This research includes a simulation study as well as an examination of existing PWM schemes in the literature, as well as a proposal for TESVPWM for inverters. The inverter performance has evaluated using total harmonic distortion and fundamental components, validating by simulation findings.

Shailesh Kumar Gupta, Mohammed Arif Khan, Omveer Singh, and avendra Kumar Chauhan

International Information and Engineering Technology Association
To supply five-phase variable speed drives, five-phase voltage source inverters are used. Some of the applications of five-phase variable speed drives are traction, electric & hybrid-electric vehicles, and ship propulsion. Different control systems are available for the controlled output of the five-phase VSI, but space vector pulse width modulation is popular because of its simpler digital implementation. In this paper, the SVPWM schemes have proposed and analyzed for the multilevel operation of a five-phase dual voltage source inverter. The proposed techniques do not contribute a voltage balancing issues such as in multilevel neutral point clamped (NPC) inverters. The author analyzed the performance of five-phase VSI based on THD and fundamental components. Matlab/Simulink model has provided for results verification.

  • Pulse width modulation switching schemes for two-level five-phase voltage source inverter
Shailesh Kumar Gupta, MohdArif Khan, and Omveer Singh

International Information and Engineering Technology Association
This paper proposes pulse width modulation schemes for a two-level five-phase voltage source inverter. According to the literature, the generation of a pure sinusoidal waveform requires an (n-1) number of vectors for 'n' number of phases, so in a five-phase system, a minimum of four-vectors is needed to generate a sinusoidal waveform. The author uses only two large vectors in this paper for a five-phase voltage source inverter. Vector diagram, switching table, and switching waveform have presented for two adjacent large space vectors. The performance for each PWM scheme is analyze based on fundamental components and total harmonic distortion. In last, results have verified in the Simulink environment.

  • Simulation Study of Time Equivalent SVPWM Scheme for Seven Phase VSI at Inductive Load
Shailesh Kumar Gupta, Omveer Singh, and Mohd. Arif Khan

    IEEE
In this article author discuss the simulation study of time equivalent SVPWM scheme for seven phase VSI at inductive load in matlab/simulink environment. Seven phase machine drives are supplied by the seven phase voltage source inverters and utilized in high power applications. To get the desired output, it is necessary to control the output of the inverter. Lots of controlling schemes have been discussed in the past but time equivalent SVPWM has least total harmonic distortion as compared to other PWM techniques. In this paper, author first provide the complete algorithm of time equivalent SVPWM scheme for seven phase then output of voltage source inverter is analyzed on the two basis of indices named fundamental component and total harmonic distortion. Simulation is provided to validate the results.

  • Simulation Study of Five-Phase Dual Two Level Inverter System using Unified Space Vector PWM
Shailesh Kumar Gupta, Md. Arif Khan, Omveer Singh, and D. K. Chauhan

    IEEE
This paper presents simulation study of five-phase two-level dual inverter system using unified space vector pulse width modulation scheme with two isolated DC link voltage sources. The switching signals have generated using unified SVPWM to minimize the total switching frequency and total harmonic distortion as an advantage. Proposed scheme removes the limitation of complexity and cost of multi-level inverter by using dual two level voltage source inverter. The proposed scheme utilizes only the large voltage vectors of the five-phase voltage space vector structure of the individual inverters. Simulation results have shown to validate the concept.

  • Space Vector Modulation Strategy for Three Level Operation of Five-Phase Two-Level Dual Voltage Source Inverter System
Shailesh Kumar Gupta and Mohammad Arif Khan

    IEEE
This paper proposes space vector modulation (SVM) scheme for three-level operation of a five-phase two-level dual-voltage inverter (VSI) system. The five-phase open-end winding has connected to the output of dual inverters. The proposed scheme does not have a voltage balancing problem such as in a three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverters and can be operated by two isolated DC sources of equal/unequal voltage. The simulation results have provided for the validation of the proposed scheme.

  • Pulse width modulation switching analysis for three phase dual inverter system using artificial neural network
Mohd. Arif Khan, Shailesh Kumar Gupta, and Omveer Singh

    IEEE
this paper is presenting artificial neural network based pulse width modulation switching analysis for the three-phase dual two level inverters system with isolated two dc voltage sources. Some applications require power and torque variation, which takes time to improve the overall efficiency and reliability of the system. For such applications, an enhanced switching sequence analysis has presented. This scheme has improved quality of the output voltage and reduces THD in the line voltage. The performance analysis using ANN of this scheme has validated by simulation results.

    Mohd. Arif Khan

    IEEE
In this paper, a simple voltage modulation technique is described for a quasi six-phase voltage source inverter (VSI). The proposed modulation is based on the sampled reference voltages and effective time concept. In the proposed technique the actual switching times for each inverter legs are obtained directly in simple form. The execution time in real time application can be reduced significantly compared to the conventional space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM). Simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the proposed theory.

  • Artificial neural network based PWM scheme for a quasi six-phase voltage source inverter
Mohammad Shahid Jamil, Mohd. Arif Khan, Atif Iqbal, and Shaikh Moinuddin

    IEEE
Multi-phase motor drive system are increasingly used due to their inherent advantages. Several topologies are investigated in the literature for multi-phase drive system. The most popular among them are five-phase and six-phase. In six-phase system two topologies exist. In one topology, the windings or phases are 60 degrees apart and called symmetrical six-phase system. The second topology has two sets of three-phases and is displaced by 30 degrees. This is called quasi-six-phase or dual three-phase. In this paper, Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique is described for a quasi six-phase voltage source inverter (VSI). The output of the inverter is two set of three-phases with 30 phase displacement. The proposed PWM is based on the artificial neural network concept. ANN method of PWM is highly useful for high switching frequency operation. Simulation results are provided to validate the proposed theory.

  • Comparative analysis of pulse width modulation schemes for five phase voltage source inverter
Shailesh Kumar Gupta, Mohd. Arif Khan, Atif Iqbal, and Zakir Husain

    IEEE
Space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) is an optimum pulse width modulation technique for an inverter used in a variable frequency drive applications. It is computationally rigorous and hence limits the inverter switching frequency. This paper discusses a time equivalent SVPWM and neural Network based SVPWM technique for a five-phase voltage source inverter in under modulation region. A neural network has the advantage of very fast implementation of an SVPWM algorithm that can increase the inverter switching frequency. The scheme has been simulated and comparative study is given with the existing PWM schemes. The simulation results are given to validate the concept of proposed schemes.

  • Analysis of discontinuous space vector PWM techniques for a seven-phase voltage source inverter
Mohd. Arif Khan, Atif Iqbal, Sk Moin Ahmad, and Zakir Husain

Institute of Advanced Engineering and Science
This paper presents discontinuous space vector PWM (DPWM) techniques for a seven-phase voltage source inverter (VSI). Space vector model of a seven-phase VSI shows that there exist 128 space vectors with different lengths and maps into fourteen sided polygons. A number of possibilities could arise to implement modulation of inverter legs due to large number of available space voltage vectors. Two strategies are adopted here; one utilising large and two middle sets of space vectors to implement discontinuous space vector PWM. Clamping of legs of inverter to either positive or negative dc bus leads to discontinuity in the switching and consequently offers reduced switching loss modulation strategy. A significant reduction in switching losses can be achieved while employing DPWM in a seven-phase VSI. A generalised method is also proposed to realize the DPWM in a seven-phase VSI. Comparison of continuous and discontinuous PWM is presented in terms of switching current ripple. The experimental set-up is illustrated and the experimental results are presented. • Modeling, simulation and implementation of a five-phase induction motor drive system
Atif Iqbal, Sk. Moin Ahmed, Md. Arif Khan, Mohd. Rizwan Khan, and Haitham Abu-Rub

    IEEE
This paper presents a comprehensive simulation model of a five-phase induction motor drive system. Both open-loop and closed-loop control is elaborated. The complete component modeling is developed using ‘simpower system’ blocksets of Matlab/Simulink. To address the real time implementation issues, dead banding of the inverter switches are also incorporated in the simulation model. To validate the modeling procedure, experimental implementation is done in TMS320F2812 DSP platform with a custom built five-phase drive system. Excitation, acceleration and loading transients are investigated. The developed simulation model is fully verified by the real time implementation.

  • Discontinuous space vector PWM strategies for a seven-phase voltage source inverter
Mohd. Arif Khan, S. K. Moin Ahmed, Atif Iqbal, Haitham Abu Rub, and S. K. Moinoddin

    IEEE
This paper presents discontinuous space vector PWM (DPWM) strategies for a seven-phase voltage source inverter (VSI). Space vector model of a seven-phase VSI shows that there exist 128 space vectors with different lengths and maps into fourteen sided polygons. A number of possibilities could arise to implement modulation of inverter legs due to large number of available space voltage vectors. Two strategies are adopted here; one utilising only large set of space vectors and another using large and two middle sets of space vectors to implement discontinuous space vector PWM. The former offer best utilisation of available dc link and the later offers nearly sinusoidal output. A significant reduction in switching losses is observed. A generalised formula is presented to determine the exact amount of reduction in the switching losses by using DPWM. Simulation results are provided to validate the concept followed by their experimental implementation. The experimental set-up is illustrated and the experimental results matches the simulation results.
