This project investigates professional education experiences in the Northern Fluminense region, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between the 1880s and 1930s. The research premise is that the Escola de Aprendizes Artífices (1909) was not the sole initiative for professional teaching in the region. We propose to investigate diverse educational experiences from the post-abolition context onward—a moment of working-class reconfiguration—observing their specificities and relationship with the economic and social context. Campos and its surrounding areas are used as the unit of analysis to understand the interaction between local and state scales. The study mobilizes concepts of political culture, political mediation, and social representations to interpret these educational experiences. Official documents, newspapers, and institutional archives will be utilized for a micro-analytical approach. The research aims to contribute to the historical understanding of professional education.
This ongoing project investigates the historical trajectory of the IFF Campos Centro, founded in 1909 as the Escola de Aprendizes Artífices. The study uses the biographies of former directors to map key aspects of Brazilian Professional Education history. Our findings track significant institutional changes: from initial directors linked to the Ministry of Agriculture and circulating nationally, to later technical directors appointed after the creation of the Ministry of Education, culminating in the transition to democratically elected directors from within the institution following the redemocratization process.
This project focuses on the organization, classification, and digitization of the Nilo Peçanha Memory Center collection at IFF Campos Centro, dating from 1910. The vast collection includes over 1,600 identified textual items and 6,000+ photographs, which require archival classification and cataloging according to professional standards. A recent addition of historical videos on VHS also needs sanitization and digital conversion. The aim is to ensure proper preservation and facilitate scholarly and public access to this valuable resource on institutional history.
