Assessment of Real-world Learning in the Participants of Design-build Studio in Architecture Education Shweta Saxena, Sandeep Arora Future is Urban II Urban Resilience Capacity Building Nature Based Solutions, 2024 In a design-build studio in architecture education, participants are expected to operate in a real context. Among various features of design-build studio formats, real-world exposure and learning demand that the participants immerse themselves in the context and use unobtrusive observational techniques. During such studios or courses, as participants interact with people and society, they develop values such as empathy and respect for others. Often students engage in social-economic issues, for instance when designing for poor or slum dwellers, they also develop a spirit of service and responsibility toward society. Along with the capacity building of future architects, such studio formats also facilitate client/community participation. While interacting with real clients, students develop ethics while understanding the boundaries defined by their role as designers. Furthermore, soft skills such as communication skills and skills to generate discussions are developed as learners interact with clients/respondents using unobtrusive tools and techniques for data collection. However, assessment of real-world learning always remained a challenge in academia. This research paper aims to develop a tool to assess the the real-world learning outcomes of design-build studio participants in architecture education. Along with content analysis of available literature on design-build studios, qualitative exploration and analysis of data collected by conducting a design-build studio at the School of Planning and Architecture Bhopal, guided this tool development process. In design-build studios, the aim of assessing real-world learning in the participants is to evaluate their practical application of theoretical knowledge and their ability to integrate design principles with construction techniques. By assessing participants’ competence in executing architectural projects in a real-world context, and determining the effectiveness of the design-build studio as an educational approach this paper contributes to the growing body of knowledge on experiential learning in architecture education.
Building Bye-Laws and Solar Access: A Study to Identify Limitations and Opportunities Sandeep Arora, Shweta Saxena Future is Urban II Urban Resilience Capacity Building Nature Based Solutions, 2024 In Indian cities, the unobstructed access to natural resources such as sun, wind, and light is dwindling with the increasing density of the built environments. With limited access to sun, wind, and light in residential urban environments, the occupants rely on active means of environmental control thereby increasing energy consumption. Furthermore, the generative potential realizable through the use of photovoltaic and other such technology can be tapped only if the built masses are designed to harvest natural energy. Building bye-laws for various types of developments attempt to address the above issue only to a marginal extent. Through various tools such as Floor Area Ratio, Permissible Height, and Minimum Open Space, various development ordinances attempt to regulate the density as well as the form of urban built environments. However, such controls do not take into account the solar geometry and its implications on the directional exposures of urban built volumes. This paper presents a study of building bye-laws vis-à-vis solar geometry for the flatted residential developments in the city of Bhopal. Comparing existing regulations with desired controls as per the earth-sun relationship, various observations shared in this paper highlight the alignments and contradictions between built forms as signified by bye-laws and the ones that ensure solar access.
Participants’ Perspectives on Design-Build Experience: A Qualitative Exploration Shweta Saxena, Sandeep Arora, Rachna Khare Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems, 2021 It has been established by pedagogues that for understanding and applying the knowledge, education must have both abstract and concrete components. In professional degree programs, the abstraction could be achieved through classroom teaching. However, for the longer retention of the acquired knowledge and contextually appropriate applications, the learning environment must closely resemble the work environment. A design-build studio in architecture education is one such format designed to resemble the architectural practice and to create a better learning environment for its participants. The pedagogy of design-build studios uses tools of experiential learning like role-playing, reflective practice, etc. Although, the existing literature on design-build studios present substantial elaborations on participants' learning; there is marginal documentation of the participants’ perspectives on their experience. This paper presents the process of analyzing open-ended responses from sixty-six participants of a design-build project conducted at the School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal, India. In addition, the study elaborates a major theme ‘evaluating design-build learning’ that emerged from the data along with five sub-themes. This qualitative exploration helped in understanding the deeper meaning of design-build studios and their effect on participants' learning. Also, it helped in evaluating the design-build pedagogy for architecture education.
Exploring issues for indian elderly through intense user centric design studio Khare Rachna, Sandeep Sankat, Sandeep Arora, Chaurasia Devarshi, Kar Gourab Assistive Technology Research Series, 2014 This short paper presents universal design studio conducted for multidisciplinary design students at National Institute of Design, Ahmadabad, India. The studio was conducted by School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal under an overall theme of inclusive design for elderly. However this short paper presents an overview, the presentation would also include best students' works.
