  • EFFECT OF ZNO NANOPARTICLES SYNTHESIZED BY THE IMPROVED METHOD ON THE ANTIBACTERIAL PROPERTIES OF COTTON TEXTILE MATERIALS

    The object of this study is imparting antimicrobial properties to textile materials made from natural fibers and their blends. The study is aimed at solving the problem of ensuring a prolonged antimicrobial effect of cotton-containing fabrics. The use of ZnO nanoparticles, synthesized by the simple resource-saving method, as part of polymer-colloidal finishing compositions for the fabrics finishing is proposed. The effectiveness of using synthesized ZnO to impart prolonged antibacterial properties to cotton fabrics was assessed by studying the morphology, chemical composition, and bactericidal activity of nanoparticles. ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized by direct precipitation method at low temperatures in a short time in an aqueous solution using zinc acetate dihydrate and sodium hydroxide as precursors. The average crystallite size calculated using the Scherrer method is 28 nm. The degree of crystallinity according to X-ray diffraction pattern is 93 %. Using scanning electron microscopy, the formation of nanoparticles of uniform size in the form of short rods was established and the successfully synthesized ZnO phase in the hexagonal wurtzite structure was confirmed. The chemical purity of the crystalline material was confirmed using energy dispersive analysis. The atomic percentages of the elements are 47.6 % and 52.4 % for Zn and O, respectively. Study of the inhibition zone around fabric disks treated with ZnO showed their high bactericidal activity against air microflora and the gram-negative bacterium P. aeruginosa. It has been established that the use of ZnO as part of a polymer-colloidal system based on the acrylic polymer ensures the resistance of bactericidal treatment to washing. The reported scientific results are of practical importance for improving the standard technological process for finishing cotton textile materials

  • Diamine Groups on the Surface of Silica Particles as Complex-Forming Linkers for Metal Cations

    Novel spherically shaped organosilica materials with (propyl)ethylenediamine groups were obtained via a modified one-pot Stöber co-condensation method. The porosity of these materials was tuned with the controlled addition of three silica monomers acting as structuring agents (tetraethoxysilane and bridged silanes with ethylene and phenylene bridges). The morphologies and structures of the synthesized materials were studied by SEM, DRIFT spectroscopy, CHNS elemental analysis, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption–desorption, and electrokinetic potential measurements. Their sizes were in the range of 50 to 100 nm, depending on the amount of structuring silane used in the reaction. The degree of the particles’ agglomeration determined the mesoporosity of the samples. The content of the (propyl)ethylenediamine groups was directly related with the amount of functional silane used in the reaction. The zeta potential measurements indicated the presence of silanol groups in bissilane-based samples, which added new active centers on the surface and reduced the activity of the amino groups. The static sorption capacities (SSCs) of the obtained samples towards Cu(II), Ni(II), and Eu(III) ions depended on the porosity of the samples and the spatial arrangement of the ethylenediamine groups; therefore, the SSC values were not always higher for the samples with the largest number of groups. The highest SSC values achieved were 1.8 mmolCu(II)/g (for ethylene-bridged samples), 0.83 mmolNi(II)/g (for phenylene-bridged samples), and 0.55 mmolEu(III)/g (for tetraethoxysilane-based samples).

  • EVALUATION OF THE COMPATIBILITY OF POLYORGANYLSILOXANES AND HIGH-MOLECULAR POLYMERS USED AS EMULSIFIERS IN FINISHING WORKS

    The compatibility of polyorganylsiloxanes and high-molecular polymers used as emulsifiers was evaluated. The surface and bulk properties of the studied compounds were evaluated using the solubility parameters (δ). It is shown that the copolymers of acrylic acid compound – polyacrylamide and hydrolyzed polyacrylamide, as well as polyvinyl alcohol without residual acetate groups in the macromolecule have the highest degree of incompatibility with polyorganylsiloxanes. It was established that the presence of residual acetate groups in the macromolecule of polyvinyl alcohol leads to an increase in the degree of compatibility of polymers. The calculated data on the fractions of solubility parameters and cohesive energy of polyorganylsiloxanes and emulsifying polymers are presented. The contributions of the components of polymers cohesive energy due to the fractions of dispersion interaction αd, dipole-dipole interaction αdd, and hydrogen bonding αh, as well as their influence on the degree of solubility of the polymer – emulsifier system, are shown. The choice of polyvinyl alcohol with residual acetate groups as an emulsifier for polyorganylsiloxanes is theoretically substantiated based on the concept of the solubility parameter as a measure of the affinity of the system components. The developed approach to assessing the compatibility of the polymer – emulsifier system is of practical importance for the creation of polymer compositions in the finishing works.

  • Study of the Influence of the Surface Roughness of Knitted Fabrics from Natural Fibres on the Light Fastness of Their Colours

    The article examines the influence of the surface properties of knitted fabrics from cotton and wool of various knitted structures on the light fastness of their colours. The surface properties of knitted fabrics of single plain, 1×1 rib and French piqué knitted structures were evaluated by determining their roughness using a non-contact optical method for processing digital images of the knitted fabric’s surface. The roughness profiles of the corresponding knitted fabric samples were obtained, and the main indicators of surface roughness were calculated: the profile height at ten points Rz and the arithmetic mean profile deviation Ra . Cotton knitted fabrics were dyed with the Bezaktiv Cosmos dye brand, which are bifunctional reactive dyes with monochlorotriazine / vinyl sulfone active groups, and wool knitted fabrics were dyed with acid dyes. The light fastness of the samples was evaluated after exposure to the Light Fastness Tester (Mercury-Tungsten Lamp) RF 1201 BS (REFOND) with a PCE-TCR 200 colorimeter. Colour measurements were averaged for each sample. Total colour difference (dE) was measured on the dyed cotton knitted fabrics samples after light exposure. According to the obtained roughness profiles of cotton and wool knitted fabrics, it can be concluded that the studied knitted fabrics are characterized by different roughness, which depends on their knitted structures. At the same time, a relationship was found between an increase in the roughness of knitted fabrics and the photodestruction of colours by reactive and acid dyes on cotton and wool knitted fabrics, respectively. The results show that the surface structure of knitted fabrics, that is the knitted structure, impacts the process of colour photodestruction and that the amount of dye that has undergone photodestruction increases with the increasing surface roughness of the knitted fabric.

    Mathematical planning of the experiment was used to develop a formulation for light stabilizers to improve the lightfastness of cotton knitwear coloration, dyed with active dyes, in order to produce comfortable and high-quality knitted clothes. The variance and factor analyses of the experiment's results were performed, which was carried out according to the scheme of the Latin cube of the first order involving the variation of factors – the type of light stabilizers and their concentration. The technological mode of application of light stabilizers implied the impregnation of knitted fabric, drying, and thermal fixation of the material. For the dyed knitwear samples, we have investigated the individual influence of light stabilizers on changing the color of the dyed knitted fabric and the kinetics of coloration photodegradation. The samples were insolated using the device with mercury-tungsten lamp RF 1201 BS ("REFOND", China). Following the treatment and insolation, the general color differences of knitwear samples were determined in comparison with the non-treated material, using the TCR-200 colorimeter ("PCE Instruments", Germany). The effectiveness of the developed formulation for light stabilizers was confirmed in the study of the lightfastness of knitted fabrics such as pique weave, 1+1 eraser, smooth surface, dyed with active dyes of the brand Bezaktiv ("CHT Bezema", Czech Republic). The result of our study is the developed formulation of light stabilizers consisting of 2,4-dihydroxy benzophenone, a UV-absorber, and hydroquinone, an antioxidant, at concentrations of 2 and 1 % of the material weight, respectively, which ensures an increase in the lightfastness of cotton knitwear coloration by 52.9‒66.8 % regardless of weave and active dye

    The results of the study of the physicochemical properties of styrene-acrylic and urethane polymer films, as well as polymer compositions based on the studied polymers with the addition of crosslinking agents are presented. Aqueous dispersions of styrene-acrylic polymers Lacritex 309, Lacritex 430, Lacritex 640 and polyurethane polymer Aquapol 14 were used for the formation of films. Triglycidyl esthers of polyoxypropylene triol and trimethylolpropane — Laproxid 703 and Laproxid TMP — were used as crosslinking agents. The stability of polymer films to hydrolytic destruction was evaluated after treatment at 20, 40 and 100 °C, and to the soap-soda treatment — at 40 °C. It was found that the most resistant to hydrolysis and soap-soda treatment are films from styrene-acrylic polymer Lacritex 309 and compositions Lacritex 640 / Laproxid 703, Aquapol 14 / Laproxid TMP, Aquapol 14 / Laproxid 703. The tensile load, elongation at break, stiffness and surface tackiness were also determined for the studied polymer films. It was found that polymer films based on Lacritex 309 and compositions Lacritex 640 / Laproxid 703, Aquapol 14 / Laproxid 703 are characterized by the greatest strength and elongation, non-rigid and non-tacky surface. Adding Laproxid TMP to polyurethane Aquapol 14 provides creation of a solid and inelastic film. To assess the effect of polymer coatings on the textile material rigidity, a cotton fabric with twill weave was used, which is used for special work clothes. Polymers and their compositions were applied to the fabric from a solution with a concentration of 150 g/l, followed by drying and heat setting. For dressed cotton fabric, rigidity and breaking load were determined. The rigidity of the treated cotton fabric was determined by the method of console. It has been established that the use of polyurethane Aquapol 14 and compositions based on it, as well as styrene-acrylic dispersions Lacritex 309 and Lacritex 430 will result in hard handle of textile materials. The composition based on Lacritex 640 with the addition of Laproxid 703 as a crosslinker provides an elastic and strong textile material.

    The use of UV adsorbers included in composition of a polymer film is a promising way of color protecting against effects of light since application of the polymer to the textile material surface is a universal way of providing the textile materials with necessary special properties. Optical characteristics are the most important indicators of suitability of polymer films for their use in final processing of colored textile materials. The objective of this study consisted in a spectrophotometric determination of optical characteristics of polymer films based on a styrene-acrylic polymer with addition of a cross-linking agent and UV adsorbers for the use in final processing of textile materials for the purpose of their color protection. The polymer matrix is an aqueous dispersion of a thermally linking styrene-acrylic copolymer. Partly esterified melamine resin was used as a cross-linking agent and 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone, 3,6-dihydroxyacetophenone, salicylic acid phenyl ether, p-methoxy cinnamic acid were used as UV adsorbers. Optical characteristics of polymer films were determined using SF-56 spectrophotometer by constructing spectral curves of absorption and transmission in the range of 200‒800 nm. Based on analysis of spectral curves of absorption in polymer films, UV adsorbers which provide formation of colorless polymer films have been established. Spectral curves of light transmission of the studied polymer films in the visible portion of spectrum have allowed us to determine effect of UV adsorbers on film transparency and light transmission in relation to UV rays in the UV portion of the spectrum. Substances that contribute to reduction of UV radiation transmission through polymeric films and provide light protection properties were established. Based on the multivariate analysis of the results obtained in the study of optical characteristics of polymer films, a composition based on styrene-acrylic polymer, cross-linking agent and UV adsorber was recommended. The found composition is suitable for its use in final processing of colored textile materials in order to form a colorless, transparent coating with light-protective properties.

    The influence of crosslinking agents on the characteristics and properties of films from aqueous dispersions of styrene-acrylic polymers Lacritex 309, 430 and 640 was studied in order to obtain coatings on textile materials. Mono-, di- and triglycidyl esters are chosen as crosslinking agents. The choice of aqueous dispersions of polymers and crosslinkers is due to strict environmental requirements for textile products. By determining the amount of aceton-insoluble fractions of the formed polymer films, it was determined that the incorporation of crosslinkers is required in the Lacritex dispersion 640, and the films based on Lacritex 430 and 309 are distinguished by a high degree of intermolecular crosslinking. Optimum concentrations of crosslinkers have been established, which provide a high degree of curing of Lacritex 640. Using the sol-gel method, the structural parameters of the spatial nets of styrene-acrylic polymers (the part of sol fraction, the degree of crosslinking, the part of active chains, the average molecular weight of the chain segment, the crosslink density) were calculated. The polymer films from the individual polymer Lacritex 430 have the highest indexes of physic mechanical characteristics. Lacritex 640/Laproxide 703 compositions can be used as polymer matrixes for textile materials. The formation of crosslinks of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of the styrene-acrylic polymer with epoxy groups of the crosslinking agent was confirmed by IR spectroscopy. The investigation of the effect of water and soap-soda treatments at various temperatures shows that the films under study have high resistance to water and soap-soda solution. The results of investigation of the tensile strength, the elongation at break, the hardness of the coating surface by the Koenig method and the stickiness according to the FINAT method (Test Method Number 9) of the formed polymer films indicate high physical and mechanical properties such as increased mechanical strength and elasticity, reduced hardness and tackiness. Thus, based on the studies carried out, it can be concluded that the individual styrene-acrylic Lacritex polymers 309 and 430 provide the formation of a strong three-dimensional spatial structure of the polymer film and can be used without crosslinking agents. The use of Lacritex 640 is possible in the composition together with the Laproxide 703 crosslinking agent at an optimum concentration of 4%. A polymer film based on this composition has a high degree of crosslinking, and as a result, increased resistance to organic solvents, reduced hydrolytic degradation at high temperatures, and increased physico-mechanical properties.   • Examining a change in the properties of coarse wool fiber under the influence of electrical discharge treatment

    Modification of coarse wool fibre is a basic condition for improving quality of the manufactured woolen textile products while reducing their cost. Traditional methods of modification of wool are expensive, that is why the implementation of these methods into existing technological modes is not always economically justified. The obtained effect of modification is often associated with undesirable damage of protein structure of fiber. A solution to this problem is the application of electric discharge treatment, accompanied by the emergence of electric discharge non-linear bulk cavitation. It is shown that the influence of electrohydrolic shock and products of water cleavage on wool does not cause profound destruction of keratin, in contrast to enzymatic and plasmochemical methods of treatment. Based on the performed experimental studies, it was determined that during electric discharge treatment of coarse wool there occurs the compaction of fiber cuticles and a change in supramolecular structure of keratin. This fact predetermines a decrease in felting ability of wool fibre, an increase in sorption properties, as well as in resistance to hydrolysis and influence of oxidants and reductants. It was established that the application of electric discharge treatment as a method of coarse wool modification would contribute to a decrease in shrinking and improvement of optimized dyeing of woolen textile material. Thus, the proposed technology of wool improvement will make it possible to use less expensive raw materials for the production of textile materials for different purposes.

  • Development of styrene-acrylic polymeric compositions for the coating of textile materials used for packing

    As a result of the determination of the chemical, physical-chemical and physical and mechanical properties of individual styrene-acrylic polymers and their compositions with crosslinking agents, it has been found that the formation of a strong three-dimensional spatial structure of films provides the styrene-acrylic polymer Lacrytex 430. It is possible to use this polymer without crosslinking agents. The additional introduction of Laproxide and Appretta ECO into the composition lowers the degree of structuring of polymer films. It was established that for the Lacrytex 640 preparation, which has a low structuring index, the introduction of the glycidyl ester of the Laproxide 703 trade mark leads to an increase in the degree of crosslinking to 7.9 % and, as a result, to an increase in the resistance to organic solvents, to a reduction of hydrolytic degradation at high temperatures and to an increase in the physical-mechanical indicators. Taking into account the need to obtain low-content compositions that provide a complex of necessary properties to the final product, the use of individual styrene-acrylic polymer Lacrytex 430 and Lacrytex 640/Laproxide 703 composition, which provides obtaining elastic coatings, is actual and economically sound.

  • Designing a composition formulation of surface active substances for the pretreatment of knitted fabric

    The process of pretreatment of knitted fabrics for dyeing is the most important technological operation. As a result of the pretreatment, fabrics acquire capability to wet evenly, which contributes to the uniform putting of the solutions of dyes and other decoration substances. Based on the analysis of the washing and wetting capacity of different classes of surface active substances, we determined those preparations, which ensure the optimal capillary properties of knitted fabric. A mathematical model by the wetting and washing capacities was obtained by the method of mathematical planning of the experiment – the Scheffe’s simplex lattice plan of the second order. Based on the obtained results, the Authors carried out optimization of the models “composition­property” and determined the optimal formulation of the composition for pretreatment of cotton knitted fabric for dyeing, g/l: SAS1=3,40; SAS2=2,75; SAS3=0,90; SAS4=2,90. It was found that the application of the proposed composition of SAS of the concentration 1,2 g/l for the technology of pretreatment of knitted fabric leads to a significant increase in the capillarity of knitted fabric (by 3 times) and the degree of fixation of active dye (by 7,5 %).

  • Development of a two-step technology of scouring wool by the method of highenergy discrete treatment

    The process of pretreatment of wool fiber is the main factor, which determines the state of the raw material base of wool. The prime cost and the quality of the finished products depend on how and in what way wool scouring was performed. The traditional technologies of the wool pretreatment are expensive and inefficient; furthermore, the problem of extraction of wool grease from the used washing waters is not paid sufficient attention to. The solution to this problem is applying innovative technology of high­energy discrete processing. Based on the conducted experimental studies, we proposed the technology of two­stage wool scouring by the method of high­energy discrete processing, which includes the following sequence of technological operations: mechanical scouring of wool, the high­energy discrete processing of wool for 3 minutes, washing of wool in the SAS solution with the concentration of 1,5 g/l, at the temperature of 45 °C, washing of wool in clean water, drying. It was determined that the application of high­energy discrete processing of wool fiber for 3 minutes at the stage of washing contributes to improvement of the qualitative characteristics and to the increase in the output of wool grease up to 96 % in comparison with the amount of grease extracted from the unprocessed fiber.

    The influence of the electric-discharge treatment on changes in the physical and chemical properties of water has been investigated. It is shown that the influence of the electrical discharge nonlinear bulk cavitation changes the structure of water as well as the formation of free radicals and hydrogen peroxide. The electric-discharge treatment increases the whiteness of wool due to the changes in water properties.
