  • EFFECT OF LITHIUM CHLORIDE ON FLUCTUATING ASYMMETRY OF STERNOPLEURAL BRISTLES IN DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER (MEIGEN)
Vijaykumar Rajashekhar, Shivanand Gotyal, Srinath Sridhar Belgaum, Nanjaiah Shivanna
    Indian Journal of Entomology, 2026
The sternopleural bristle number (SBN) and sternopleural index (SI) are key traits in the taxonomy, genetics, and evolutionary research of Drosophila. This study is the first to apply SI in Fluctuating Asymmetry (FA) analysis, comparing it with SBN in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster Meigen, exposed to 15, 45, and 75 mM Lithium Chloride (LiCl). FA increased significantly at 45 and 75 mM for both traits in both sexes, while 15 mM LiCl led to decreased FA in SI and increased FA in SBN (females only). Trait sizes showed no significant variation. FA comparison revealed that SI to be more robust than SBN, indicating its suitability for assessing developmental instability.

  • Polymorphism among anterior and posterior sets of teeth in the periphallic organ of three species of drosophila
    Srinath Sridhar BELGAUM, Nanjaiah SHIVANNA
    Turkish Journal of Zoology, 2015
For the first time, morphological polymorphism among the anterior and posterior sets of primary teeth of the periphallic organ was observed among natural populations of Drosophila. Natural and laboratory populations of 3 different species (D. Ananassae, D. Bipectinata, and D. Malerkotliana) belonging to the ananassae subgroup were used to study the intra- and interspecific variations in the number of teeth of the anterior and posterior sets of the periphallic organ. There are about 22, 20, and 20 possible combinations of sets of teeth recorded in D. Ananassae, D. Bipectinata, and D. Malerkotliana, respectively. The maximum frequency of anterior and posterior sets of teeth was found to be (5, 3) in D. Ananassae and (2, 3) in the case of D. Bipectinata and D. Malerkotliana. The percentage of perfect bilateral symmetry was lower than that of asymmetry in all 3 species. A significant difference was found in anterior and posterior sets of teeth between different populations. These results indicate that the primary teeth of the anterior and posterior sets of the periphallic organ in Drosophila exhibit morphological polymorphism.

Larval pupation site preference (PSP) of different species of Drosophila was analyzed on fruit in the laboratory. The larvae of D. melanogaster, D. ananassae, D. virilis, D. novamexicana and D. hydei pupated on the surface of glass vials; D. simulans, D. yakuba, D. mauritiana and D. malerkotliana pupated in/on fruit; and D. rajasekari pupated on cotton plugs in all experiments. D. bipectinata larvae changed their preference from fruit in the control to glass surface for all of the fruits tested. The statistical analysis of PSP (glass and fruit) found a significant result in that compared to other species, D. mauritiana and D. ananassae preferred to pupate on cotton compared to the control.
