Characteristics of polymeric fiber reinforced cementitious composite (PFRCC) under uniaxial compression Shwan Hussain Said, Khamees Nayyef Abdulhaleem, Ahmed Abdalhafedh Mustafa Al-Shaar Journal of Engineering and Technological Sciences, 2021 This study aimed to evaluate the compressive characteristics and toughness of polymeric fiber reinforced cementitious composites (PFRCC). In the experimental program, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers were used to prepare two groups of PFRCC cylinders with different fiber contents. The main factor considered in this study was the reinforcing index. Several parameters were investigated, i.e. compressive strength, elastic modulus, strain at peak stress, Poisson’s ratio and toughness of PFRCC. The results revealed that there was a reduction in both compressive strength and elastic modulus as the reinforcing index increased, while a significant increase in the strain at peak stress was observed. Moreover, a comparison was made between different methods of toughness estimation and it was found that 7.9 was the best reinforcing index for PVA fibers based on the energy absorption performance and ductility of PFRCC. Furthermore, an empirical model is proposed in this paper to predict the PFRCC-PVA compressive stress-strain curve. The proposed model features new formulas to calculate a number of important coefficients to plot the curve based on the reinforcing index value. Besides that, the model had good convergence compared to the experimental results, with perfect values for both variance and correlation coefficient.
A review study on the characterization of geopolymer concrete Shwan H. Said Key Engineering Materials, 2019 Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is the essential binding material to produce the OPC concrete. Production of OPC is recently attaining a rate of 2.6 billion ton per year worldwide and growing 5% annually. OPC contributes at rate of 5 – 8% of human-worldwide CO2 emissions which are the greenhouse gases pollute the atmosphere. Geopolymer concrete (GPC) is a creative, sustainable, economical and eco-friendly material for construction industry, which is a suitable alternative to the OPC concrete, able to extensively curb the CO2 emissions. To prepare this kind of concrete, a combination of pozzolanic material such as fly ash (FA), and/or ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) rich with silica and alumina can react with alkaline activator solution producing aluminosilicate gel, acting as a superb binding material for fine and coarse aggregates under special conditions of curing. This study highlights the recent explorations on geopolymer mortars and concrete. Effect of chemicals such as sulphuric acid, effect of fly ash partial replacement with different binding materials, effect of concentration of alkaline activator solutions and the effect of temperature and time of curing variation have been discussed on durability and mechanical properties of geopolymer concrete. Results have shown superb resistance of geopolymer concrete to the detrimental effects of sulphuric acid on weight and compressive strength. Furthermore, fly ash partial replacement with silica fume, OPC or GGBS, or nanosilica inclusion in GPC has a positive effect on the GPC properties. Finally, using high concentration of sodium hydroxide has a detrimental effect on GPC properties.
Strength and deformation characteristics of engineered cementitious composite slabs with different polymer fibres Shwan H Said, Hashim A Razak, Ismail Othman Journal of Reinforced Plastics and Composites, 2015 This paper presents a study on the compressive and flexural strength of engineered cementitious composite (ECC) cubes and slabs, reinforced with various polymer fibres. The type of fibre, fibre content and aspect ratio were the parameters considered in this study. For all types of fibre, the compressive strength of the ECC decreased as the reinforcing index increased. For the ECC polypropylene fibre (PP) slabs, the first crack strength significantly decreased with an increase in the fibre content. For the ECC polyethylene fibre (PE) slabs, the first crack strength decreased as the reinforcing index increased. For the ECC PE slabs, the usage of PE 1600D fibres showed a substantial increase in flexural strength due to their higher tensile strength and E modulus. The ECC PP slabs behaved like plane concrete due to the zero value of flexural strength, which was attributed to the weak interfacial bonding with the cement matrix, low tensile strength and E modulus of the PP fibres. The highest ductility was observed for the ECC-PE slabs with the highest recorded deflection values; these values achieved many extended multiple cracks and an extensive area under the load–deflection curve indicating high energy absorption capacity.
