Cervical implant fixation: a topical review of techniques and their importance Subhasish Halder, Palash Biswas, Shishir Kumar Biswas, Anindya Malas, Jayanta Kumar Biswas Biomedical Physics Engineering Express, 2026 Cervical implant fixation is a critical surgical intervention for stabilizing the cervical spine, often necessitated by trauma, degenerative diseases, or spinal deformities. While spinal disc disease has historically been treated with fusion-based procedures, there has been a recent surge of interest in motion-preserving disc arthroplasties. The present study provides a topical narrative review of selected and recent literature on cervical implant fixation techniques, including anterior and posterior approaches, implant materials, biomechanical considerations, and reported clinical outcomes. Traditional fusion-based procedures have long been used to treat cervical disc disease, while recent years have seen increasing interest in motion-preserving techniques such as cervical disc arthroplasty. Developments in implant design and fixation strategies have contributed to improved radiographic and functional results compared with earlier systems, although each technique presents specific benefits and limitations. Cervical implant fixation has evolved into a highly sophisticated discipline that includes anterior, posterior, and motion-preserving techniques for treating a wide range of spinal conditions. This review summarises recent advances, common complications, and emerging trends in cervical fixation, and highlights existing research gaps to support future investigation and clinical decision-making.
Micro-ECDM performance analysis and hybrid-optimization during micro-channel generation on silica using HGAPSO-ANN Krishnendu Mondal, Bijan Mallick, Azzam Sabah Hameed, Pijush Dutta, Shishir Kumar Biswas, Jayanta Mahato, Bidesh Bose Journal of Micromanufacturing, 2026 Hybridizing non-traditional machining (NTM) processes, such as micro-ECDM, is a great challenge in measurement and microfabrication. To find out the solution to this problem, in the present research, the overall model is demonstrated in three steps, during the first stage, ANN is used to construct the linear model of width of cut (WOC), metal removal rate (MRR), and surface roughness (SR) from experimental data consisting of process parameters, that is, voltage (V) pulse frequency (PF), electrolyte concentration (EC), and duty ratio (DR). In the second phase, to get the best-fitted model, we applied both Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and a hybrid of these two algorithms for cross-validation and validation on the train and test datasets. Based upon root mean square error, accuracy, and computational time, the proposed algorithm is more efficient than PSO and GA. Furthermore, in the final phase, the ANN model was optimized using hybrid GAPSO, which helped to determine the optimal process parameters responsible for maximum MRR, minimum WOC, and SR formation. The result shows that maximum MRR, minimum WOC, and SR were formed for the optimized value of voltage 45 volts, electrolytic concentration 30 wt%, DR 0.45, and PF 75 Hz. Moreover, hybrid GAPSO-ANN shows better convergence, accuracy, and computational time (seconds) for micro-machining characteristics analysis.
Hybrid evolutionary algorithms (hybrid-GAPSO) based optimization of MIG welding process Bijan Mallick, Azzam Sabah Hameed, Abhijit Chakraborty, Shishir Kumar Biswas, Dhiraj Mondal, Pijush Dutta Journal of Micromanufacturing, 2025 MIG welding is a modern part of advanced welding process. In this article, the mathematical modeling by ANN and parametric optimization of MIG welding joining process of cast iron has been propounded using soft computing hybrid-GAPSO. The article also shows the best model using NN basis of fittest with experimental result, computational time, convergence speed and finally RMSE obtained from cross-validation. In this research, the optimal value of the input variables obtained by hybrid-HGAPSO so that output variables hardness (HA) will be maximum & surface roughness (SR) and width of breadth thickness (WOBT) will be minimum, has been illustrated. In this experimental analysis minimized RMSE of 1.15%, 1.433%, and 1.6678% for HA, WOBT and SR are accomplished respectively by HGAPSO-ANN.
Design and development of a novel expanding flexible rod device (FRD) for stability in the lumbar spine: A finite-element study Masud Rana, Sandipan Roy, Palash Biswas, Shishir Kumar Biswas, Jayanta Kumar Biswas International Journal of Artificial Organs, 2020 The aim of this study is to design a novel expanding flexible rod device, for pedicle screw fixation to provide dynamic stability, based on strength and flexibility. Three-dimensional finite-element models of lumbar spine (L1-S) with flexible rod device on L3-L4-L5 levels are developed. The implant material is taken to be Ti-6Al-4V. The models are simulated under different boundary conditions, and the results are compared with intact model. In natural model, total range of motion under 10 Nm moment were found 66.7°, 24.3° and 13.59°, respectively during flexion–extension, lateral bending and axial rotation. The von Mises stress at intact bone was 4 ± 2 MPa and at bone, adjacent to the screw in the implanted bone, was 6 ± 3 MPa. The von Mises stress of disc of intact bone varied from 0.36 to 2.13 MPa while that of the disc between the fixed vertebra of the fixation model reduced by approximately 10% for flexion and 25% for extension compared to intact model. The von Mises stresses of pedicle screw were 120, 135, 110 and 90 MPa during flexion, extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation, respectively. All the stress values were within the safe limit of the material. Using the flexible rod device, flexibility was significantly increased in flexion/extension but not in axial rotation and lateral bending. The results suggest that dynamic stabilization system with respect to fusion is more effective for homogenizing the range of motion of the spine.
Effect of depth of cut on grindability of Inconel 600 Shishir Kumar Biswas, Arnab Kundu, Samir Kumar Bose, Dipanwita Biswas, Amit Banerjee, Sourav Majumdar Aip Conference Proceedings, 2018 Grinding exotic materials has always been a cause of concern for researchers worldwide. In this experimental study, one such exotic Ni-based alloy was chosen for determining effect of depth of cut (infeed) on grindability of Inconel 600 alloy. Dry and wet cooling conditions were employed. Using a multi-nozzle cooling system, it was seen that 16% force ratio decrease, 66% grinding ratio increase and least surface roughness were obtained at 10 um infeed. At higher infeeds, increasing the flow rate of coolant used did not report any appreciable changes. This indicates that grinding Inconel 600 with an alumina wheel is recommended using a multi-nozzle cooling system at 10 µm infeed, considering forces, surface quality and roughness.
