Rutile-type SMAW electrodes: Quantification of NORM using CR-39 and gamma spectrometry for internal dose assessment

This study investigated the potential radiological risks associated with inhaling fumes from 10 commercial shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) electrodes by testing the hypothesis that flux composition significantly influences internal dose. Activity concentrations of 238 U, 232 Th, and 40 K were measured using high-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma spectrometry and CR-39 alpha-track detectors to establish a baseline for material-based analysis. To move beyond deterministic assumptions, workplace inhalation was evaluated through empirical air sampling yielding 4–6 mg/m 3 fume mass and a Monte Carlo simulation of 10,000 iterations to account for variable release rates and particle sizes ranging from 0.3 to 5.0 μm AMAD. Results indicated bulk flux activity ranged from 12 to 59 Bq/kg for 238 U and 23 to 45 Bq/kg for 232 Th, with a strong positive correlation (r ≈ +0.87) suggesting common geological origins in minerals such as zircon or monazite. While individual Rutile samples represented the upper bound of measured activity, analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed no significant difference between Rutile and Basic electrode group means (p > 0.05), indicating high intra-group geological variability. The probabilistic mean Annual Effective Dose (AED) was found to be 0.74 mSv/yr, which remains below the primary 20 mSv/yr occupational limit but exceeds the 0.01 mSv/yr exemption level. Furthermore, the Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk (ELCR) reached 0.88 x 10 -3 , evaluated against international benchmarks to characterize long-term stochastic effects. These findings suggest that while radiological impacts vary significantly by batch, the implementation of the ALARA principle through local exhaust ventilation and material selection remains a prudent approach to managing occupational health.

Effect of gamma irradiation on optical and electronic properties of PVC/CoSe/TiO2nanocomposites

This study investigates the effects of gamma irradiation on the structural, optical, and electronic properties of PVC/CoSe/TiO 2 nanocomposite films, with irradiation doses ranging from 0 to 100 kGy. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals the predominantly amorphous nature of the PVC matrix, showing a broad halo centered around 2θ ≈ 15–25°. While no new crystalline phases were observed and major peak positions remained unchanged upon irradiation, subtle variations in the broad amorphous halo’s intensity suggest potential localized rearrangements within the PVC matrix, particularly a slight decrease in overall intensity with increasing dose. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) verifies the presence of all constituent elements (C, Cl from PVC; Co, Se from CoSe; Ti, O from TiO 2 ), confirming the successful incorporation and distribution of CoSe and TiO 2 nanoparticles within the PVC matrix. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy demonstrates a clear influence of gamma irradiation on the nanocomposite’s optical properties, evidenced by a redshift in the absorption edge of up to X nm (from 450 nm to 480 nm) and an increase in visible light absorption by up to Y% (15–20%) with increasing dose. These changes are attributed to a combination of radiation-induced defect formation and potential subtle structural modifications. Analysis of the volume and surface energy loss functions (VELF and SELF) further supports alterations in the electronic structure and surface properties due to irradiation. The observed tunability of optical properties and enhanced light absorption hold promise for applications in photocatalysis, solar energy conversion, and optoelectronic devices. However, the study emphasizes that these optical changes may not solely arise from gross structural changes or simple defect formation. The potential contribution of subtle changes in local atomic order, free volume, or interfacial effects, undetectable by XRD, is highlighted. Therefore, future work employing complementary techniques such as electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is proposed to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the complex structure-property relationships in these irradiated nanocomposites and to precisely correlate the observed optical changes with specific defect types and their evolution under gamma irradiation.

This study investigates the profound structural, thermal, optical, and mechanical modifications induced by gamma (γ) irradiation (absorbed doses of 0, 50, 100, and 150 kGy) on PVC/TiO2/CNTs/GO nanocomposites synthesized via the sol–gel method. Characterization results confirm that γ-irradiation serves as a precise engineering tool for tailoring the electronic and chemical properties of the embedded functional fillers. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Raman Spectroscopy revealed a dose-dependent reduction in TiO2 crystallite size and an increase in lattice defects (vacancies and interstitials), signaling effective electronic modification of the photocatalytic host. Concurrently, FTIR analysis confirmed that high-energy γ-rays act as a post-synthesis reducing agent, successfully decreasing oxygen-containing functional groups in Graphene Oxide (GO) and promoting its conversion to a more conductive reduced graphene oxide (rGO) structure. These structural changes yield significant functional benefits, including a widening of the TiO2 optical bandgap (blue-shift) as determined by Tauc plot analysis, which is favorable for enhancing charge separation efficiency. Furthermore, the material exhibited enhanced thermal stabilization; Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) showed a degradation onset shift of approximately 30 0C for the 100 kGy dose, while Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) revealed enthalpy suppression, confirming the energetic pre-stabilization of the composite network.
Gamma-Induced C-N-C Cross-Linking for Structural Reinforcement of Ti3C2Tx/Polyurethane Nanocomposites

This study investigates the profound effects of gamma irradiation on the structural, thermal, and mechanical integrity of Ti 3 C 2 T polyurethane (PU) nanocomposite films, which were subjected to escalating doses of 10, 50, and 100 kGy. Structural analysis, confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy and XPS N 1 s deconvolution, provided direct molecular evidence that radiation‐induced cross‐linking successfully tailored the material's performance by systematically reducing NH groups and forming a rigid CNC chemical network within the PU matrix. This structural transformation resulted in a clear dose‐dependent enhancement in thermal stability (TGA) and a significant improvement in mechanical performance, specifically an increase in Young's Modulus and ultimate tensile strength. This confirms the successful transformation of the elastomeric PU into a robust, radiation‐hardened material suitable for demanding structural applications. However, this same cross‐linking mechanism caused a catastrophic three‐order‐of‐magnitude decrease in electrical conductivity ( σ DC ), attributed to the severe disruption of the MXene percolation network. This trade‐off invalidates the material's use for general high‐performance conductive applications but introduces a novel functional consequence: the predictable, dose‐dependent change in electrical resistivity proposes its potential as an irreversible, solid‐state radiation indicator, requiring comprehensive sensor validation for full deployment. These findings establish gamma irradiation as a precise tool for interface engineering and structural reinforcement in PU/MXene systems.

This study reports the successful synthesis and characterization of a novel TiO 2 /TeO 2 /B 2 O 3 ternary glass system prepared via the sol-gel method. Comprehensive analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed a uniform, predominantly amorphous structure in the as-prepared state. Optical characterization by UV-Vis spectroscopy revealed a significant reduction in the optical band gap compared to pure TiO 2 , effectively shifting the absorption edge into the visible light region. A critical finding of this research is the material’s dose-dependent radiation stability. The ternary glass maintained its amorphous network after exposure to gamma radiation doses of 50 kGy and 75 kGy, demonstrating exceptional structural robustness. A radiation-induced structural evolution from the amorphous phase to the crystalline anatase phase of TiO 2 was only observed at a higher absorbed dose of 100 kGy. This evolution, coupled with a further reduction in the optical band gap to 2.9 eV, highlights the potential of this ternary glass for advanced applications in visible-light photocatalysis and optoelectronics where durability in high-radiation environments is essential.
Impact of gamma irradiation on the structural, morphological, and optical properties of PLA/MnFe2O3/ZnO nanocomposites

This study investigates the impact of gamma irradiation on the structural, morphological, and optical properties of PLA/MnFe₂O₃/ZnO nanocomposite films. Nanocomposites were fabricated using a sol-gel method and exposed to varying gamma radiation doses. Characterization techniques, including XRD, EDX, FTIR, EPR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and EELS, were employed to elucidate the effects of irradiation. Gamma irradiation induced significant structural modifications, such as a reduction in crystallite size (from 15 nm to 8 nm at 150 kGy) and lattice strain. The PLA matrix underwent chain scission and crosslinking, altering the material's properties. The optical bandgap narrowed from 3.2 eV to 2.8 eV at 100 kGy, leading to increased light absorption and changes in refractive index and extinction coefficient. The tunable light response, evidenced by changes in optical conductivity and electron energy loss, offers potential applications in optoelectronic devices. Gamma irradiation emerges as a versatile tool for tailoring the properties of PLA/MnFe₂O₃/ZnO nanocomposite films. The findings pave the way for the development of novel nanocomposite-based materials with tailored optical, electronic, and magnetic properties.

This study investigates the impact of gamma irradiation on the structural, optical, and electronic properties of PVC/BiVO 4 /ZnO nanocomposite films. Gamma irradiation induced significant modifications, including a decrease in BiVO 4 crystallinity, a redshift in the optical bandgap, and a decrease in photoluminescence intensity. These changes suggest alterations in the electronic structure and charge carrier dynamics within the nanocomposite. While gamma irradiation led to a decrease in crystallinity, the observed bandgap reduction could potentially be exploited to enhance photocatalytic activity by allowing the absorption of a wider range of visible light. Further research is warranted to optimize irradiation conditions and investigate the photocatalytic performance of the irradiated films. These findings provide valuable insights into the potential of gamma irradiation as a tool for tailoring the properties of PVC/BiVO 4 /ZnO nanocomposites for various applications, including photocatalysis, sensors, and optoelectronic devices.
