Rita Sobreira Lopes is Full Professor at the Institute of Psychology, and one of the coordinators of the Childhood and Family Unit (Núcleo de Infância e Família - NUDIF), Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. She carries out research in the area of human development, especially emotional development during the perinatal period - pregnancy, delivery and prematurity -, using applications of the infant observation method created by Esther Bick at the Tavistock Clinic. She has coordinated many longitudinal projects from pregnancy up to the infant's third year of life. The results of a longitudinal project using Bick's method, were published in a book translated into English by Karnac, in 2017: "Learning about human nature and analytic techniqe from mothers and babies".

    Resumo O Ministério da Saúde instituiu, em 2011, a Rede Cegonha através da Portaria no 1.459, visando assegurar um atendimento integral e integrado, da gestação até os 24 meses de vida do bebê. A partir desse importante avanço, este artigo tem como objetivo promover uma análise crítica da Portaria da Rede Cegonha a partir de um diálogo com a teoria do amadurecimento pessoal de Winnicott. Os resultados são apresentados a partir de quatro eixos norteadores: Características integradoras do cuidado, em que discutimos características da Rede Cegonha favorecedoras de um cuidado integrador; Cuidar do cuidador, em que salientamos a possibilidade de essa rede colaborar com a sustentação da dupla mãe-bebê; Especificidades do cuidado à saúde materno-infantil, em que atentamos às especificidades do processo de desenvolvimento emocional inicial; e Ética do cuidado, em que destacamos a necessidade de uma postura ética implicada no cuidado. Este artigo indicou as potencialidades e fragilidades da Rede Cegonha, trazendo novas proposições, que visem aprimorar a atenção à saúde materno-infantil, sobretudo nos dois primeiros anos de vida. Por fim, salientamos que apesar de a portaria não garantir como o cuidado é operacionalizado, reiteramos o importante potencial que a Rede Cegonha possui para um cuidado integrador na atenção à saúde materno-infantil.
  • The Development of Couple’s Relationship after Assisted Reproduction Success

    Resumo Investigamos o desenvolvimento da relação coparental e conjugal durante o processo de transição para a parentalidade no contexto da reprodução assistida, a partir de um estudo de caso coletivo longitudinal. Realizamos uma análise narrativa das entrevistas respondidas por três casais na gestação, no terceiro mês do bebê e em seu primeiro ano. Quando um dos cônjuges já tem filhos pode haver uma assimetria no enfrentamento do tratamento e da transição para a parentalidade. Pode haver, ainda, um deslocamento dos temas de conflito, embora estes tendam a ser abordados com as mesmas estratégias presentes na história do casal. Identificamos indícios da coparentalidade já no tratamento, havendo uma diferenciação crescente entre conjugalidade e coparentalidade.
  • Maternal adaptation in the role of caring for and rearing 12-month-old babies

    This study aimed to investigate the maternal role of caring for and rearing 12-month-old babies based on Winnicott ́s concepts. Twenty-fi ve primiparous mothers answered interviews about the baby’s development and motherhood. Thematic analysis showed that the maternal role of caring for was marked by manifestations of dependence and independence, by the development transitions, and by maternal sensitivity to the signs and rhythm of the baby. Regarding the role of rearing, mothers reported diff erent strategies when they needed to establish the baby ́s limits. They also had doubts about the best way to rear the baby, since he/she often opposed the maternal limits. In summary, at 12 months, the specifi city of maternal role was related to the subtle adjustment of the mother to the more active rhythm of the baby, being emotionally available to his/her new discoveries, but also allowing his/her experiences of frustration.
  • The challenge of becoming supervisor/seminar leader in infant observation

    Becoming an infant observation supervisor/seminar leader is a complex challenge, generally experienced in a solitary way. Despite the various, creative local solutions that have been tried in different parts of the world, the issue of the training of new supervisors remains open to discussion. No formal training exists for this demanding function that includes the responsibility of maintaining and transmitting the technique, as well as sustaining the dynamic and continuity of the group. In the last several years, we have witnessed a number of colleagues who have sought to prepare themselves in different ways for this new function of supervisor: a second supervised observation, supervision in pairs of supervisors, joining a group led by an experienced supervisor, and, more recently, supervision of supervision. Based on the latter experience, the aim of this paper is to present some reflections on the training and function of the infant observation supervisor. Maintaining a certain distance, the supervisor of the new supervisor/seminar leader is in a privileged position to take a more experienced and, perhaps, calmer, detailed look at the primitive unconscious observation material. This enables the new seminar leader/supervisor the opportunity to listen to herself and to simultaneously train her psychoanalytic listening of primitive psychic phenomena.

    Learning about Human Nature and Analytic Technique from Mothers and Babies, 2018
    In this paper, observational material is presented from a mother–infant pair observed from pregnancy up to the baby's third birthday. Two observers accompanied the mismatched steps of Tânia and Julie, who had to be born ahead of her time because of her mother's pre-eclampsia. This provoked a huge challenge to their sense of continuity and of connection, a basic pre-condition for human development. This observation underlines the importance of the mother's flexibility in adapting to changes and interruptions. The observation provides a fascinating glimpse into the mother–baby couple's creative recovery within a tailor-made protective, caring space of mutual growth. The authors see this longitudinal study, which extends the standard Bick method to include pregnancy and delivery, as a great opportunity to learn more about human nature.   • From nicu to home: Maternal experiences in the preterm baby's pre-discharge

    A preparação para a alta do bebê prematuro, que precisou ficar internado em uma Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal (UTI Neo) após o nascimento, é um processo complexo, permeado por diversos sentimentos e expectativas das mães. O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar os sentimentos e as expectativas maternos no momento próximo à alta hospitalar de seus bebês nascidos prematuros. Participaram 42 mães, que responderam a uma entrevista estruturada quando o bebê estava a poucos dias de receber alta. Uma análise qualitativa revelou maior envolvimento das mães nos cuidados com o bebê em relação aos momentos anteriores da internação, sendo um período marcado por mais contato e proximidade entre a díade. Destaca-se a relevância do papel da equipe, incentivando esse envolvimento e sendo parte importante da transição para o cuidado materno. Esse momento também foi marcado por sentimentos diversos e contraditórios e pela expectativa materna de poder contar com a ajuda de outras pessoas da família nos cuidados em casa. Evidencia-se a importância de que a alta do bebê seja planejada desde o início da internação, considerando-se as especificidades emocionais de cada mãe.

    Different family configurations of adoption applicants: Implications for habilitation process. New forms of parenting are gradually becoming more recognized in the society and, although not a new practice, adoption is seen increasingly as an option for families. This study investigated the view of juridical technicians involved in the habilitation process of new profiles of adoption applicants and also identified differences within those evaluations. Seventeen psychologists and social workers in southern Brazil were interviewed. Qualitative content analysis showed differences in practices about the issues: role division in homosexual couples, support-network in monoparental families, adoption as a family project in remarriages and generational gap in older applicants. These themes reflected concern for the children placed in adoption, but some reports portray values connected to biological family conceptions’. The various families’ possibilities present challenges to professionals. Therefore, it’s important that professionals know those subjects to combat prejudices and reinvent new performance modes.
