Mechanical, thermal conductivity and water absorption behaviour of eco-friendly epoxy composites incorporating agro-waste powder as hybrid reinforcement R. Sathish Kumar, G. Suresh, S. Somasundaram, R. Ashok Raj Journal of Composite Materials, 2026 Eco-friendly epoxy composites were fabricated using Aervalanata stem fiber as reinforcement and fungal agro-waste powder as filler, both treated with a silane coupling agent to improve interfacial adhesion. The prepared composites were evaluated for their mechanical, thermal, and water absorption properties. The results indicated a clear improvement in performance with the addition of fiber and filler compared with the neat epoxy matrix. Among the developed specimens, AB3 containing 30 vol.% stem fiber and 2 vol.% fungal filler exhibited the best mechanical performance, with a tensile strength of 128 MPa, flexural strength of 148 MPa, impact energy of 5.8 J, and hardness of 82 Shore-D. This improved performance is attributed to the combined effect of fiber reinforcement and well-dispersed filler, which enhanced stress transfer, crack bridging, and energy absorption during loading. In contrast, specimen AB4 with 30 vol. % fiber and 4 vol. % filler demonstrated superior thermal and moisture resistance, showing a thermal conductivity of 0.51 W/mK and the lowest water absorption value of 1.23%. The higher filler content likely promoted better heat conduction pathways and reduced micro-void formation, thereby limiting moisture penetration. Overall, the findings indicate that the hybridization of natural fiber and agro-waste filler provides a sustainable approach for developing epoxy composites with improved multifunctional properties.
Tensile strength optimisation in AA2014 aluminum alloy joints via friction stir welding: a rivet-free approach examining materials flow behaviour S. Somasundaram, C. Rajendran, D. JayaBalakrishnan, S. Sambath Canadian Metallurgical Quarterly, 2025 Steel rivets are alternative materials for connecting materials for structural fabrication industry. The use of rivets may significantly increase the structure weight, impacting its overall performance. Additionally, there is a risk of inducing corrosion at the interface due to galvanic coupling. Therefore, careful consideration of material choices and potential consequences is necessary during the design and fabrication processes. When joining dissimilar alloys, manufacturers and designers face numerous challenges with conventional fusion welding techniques. Friction stir welding is effective at joining materials without reaching their melting points; instead, it relies on severe plastic deformation and recrystallization to create a welded joint. Proper selection of the tool and process parameters is crucial for achieving a sound weld result. The results from experimental investigations highlight the significance of plastic deformation, material flow, and recrystallization as influential factors on joint strength. This finding suggested that FSW is an ideal joining process for high-strength alloys. Although friction stir welding is a suitable alternative to permanent joints, such as rivets, notably, the experimental findings reveal that friction stir welding of both but and lap joints yields maximum load-carrying capabilities of 50.5 and 51.2 kN, respectively, emphasising the efficacy of the method in structural applications
Inorganic Adsorption on Thermal Response and Wear Properties of Nanosilicon Nitride-Developed AA6061 Alloy Nanocomposite F. Mary Anjalin, A. Mohana Krishnan, G. Arunkumar, K. Raju, M. Vivekanandan, S. Somasundaram, T. Thirugnanasambandham, Elangomathavan Ramaraj Adsorption Science and Technology, 2023 Inorganic-based ceramic reinforcements are promising superior thermal behaviour and are lightweight and developed with aluminium alloy matrix for automobile applications. The AA6061 alloy nanocomposite containing 0 wt%, 4 wt%, 8 wt%, and 12 wt% of silicon nitride nanoparticles(50 nm) was synthesized by stir cast. The influences of thermal adsorption on silicon nitride (nano) additions, density, thermal response, hardness, and wear characteristics of AA6061 matrix nanocomposites are studied. Based on the rule of mixture, the density of nanocomposites is evaluated. The differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis techniques are used to find the thermal response nanocomposite. The differential scanning calorimeter is used to find the heat flow between 400°C and 700°C. The micro Vickers hardness and wear characteristics of AA6061 nanocomposite were experimentally investigated by ASTM E384 and ASTM G99-05 standards. The adsorption of inorganic nanosilicon nitride particles (12 wt%) in AA6061 alloy showed a decreased mass loss with increased temperatures 0° to 700°C. The differential thermal analysis of nanocomposite reveals the transformation of solid-to-liquid phase under high temperature (528°C).
Tribological characteristics of n-(GO/WC-10Co-4Cr) HVOF coatings under biolubricant conditions S. Somasundaram, B. R. Ramesh Bapu, R. Raj Jawahar Surface Engineering, 2021 The proposed work deals with the tribological studies of thermal spray coated nano ceramic composite materials (GO/WC-10Co-4Cr) under the presence of jojoba oil based bio lubricant. Flame spray coating was carried out on AA6061 discs with coating thickness of (50–150 µm) by different concentrations of (GO) graphene oxide (0.075–1%)wt. + nano mixture of WC-10Co-4Cr powder. Tribology tests were conducted on the coated disc samples using pin on disc apparatus as per ASTM G99-05 for various test parameters namely applied load (50N–150N), disc rotational speed (1–10 m s−1), % vol. concentration of Jojoba oil (0–30%). Results obtained from the tribo tests clarifies that the 0.085 GO/WC-10Co-4Cr composite coatings with 150µm exhibited lower friction coefficient of 0.1854, lesser wear rate of 2.25×10−5 mm3 Nm−1 compared with that of the uncoated specimens. SEM analysis portrays the formation of IMC'S (aluminium carbonate Al2(CO3)3 and chromate Al2(CrO4)3)to strengthen the boundary regime against oxidative wear.
