Cardiovascular Response to Exercise with and Without Alcohol Consumption: Evidence of an Interaction Between Distance Covered and Perceived Exertion Thiago Ferreira de Sousa, Aline de Jesus Santos, José Carlos Aragão-Santos, Sandra Celina Fernandes Fonseca Nutrients, 2026 Background: Acute alcohol consumption may interfere with the dynamics between internal and external load during exercise, potentially attenuating cardiovascular responses. Objective: This study investigated the association between distance covered during a running test and mean heart rate, while examining the moderating role of the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) under conditions with and without acute alcohol ingestion. Methods: This crossover experimental study included 12 physically active male university students (23.7 ± 3.7 years). Participants completed two intermittent running sessions (control and alcohol conditions), separated by ≥48 h. In the alcohol condition, participants consumed 0.4 g of ethanol/kg of body mass. Heart rate was continuously monitored using a Polar RCX5 monitor, and total distance covered and RPE (Borg 6–20 scale) were assessed immediately after test completion. Analyses included paired comparisons, Pearson correlations, and linear regression models with interaction terms. Results: No significant associations between variables were observed in the control condition. With alcohol consumption, distance covered was positively associated with mean heart rate, and RPE significantly moderated this relationship. Conclusions: Acute alcohol ingestion may modify the interaction between external load, perceived exertion, and cardiovascular response during running. These results highlight the importance of integrated monitoring of internal and external load, especially in contexts involving recent alcohol consumption.
Weekend Warrior and Other Leisure-Time Physical Activity Patterns in Relation to Positive Self-Rated Health: Racial Differences Among Brazilian University Students Thiago Ferreira de Sousa, Karine Moraes Pereira, Ysamara dos Santos Conceição, Cristiane dos Santos Matos, Djalma Pereira Santana, et al. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2026 Leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) is associated with positive self-rated health (SRH); however, evidence regarding different practice patterns and potential racial differences among university students remains limited. The objective of this study was to estimate the association between LTPA patterns and positive SRH among university students who entered higher education in 2025 at a public university in Brazil. This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 1143 first-year undergraduates. Positive SRH (defined as reporting “good” or “very good” health) was used as the outcome. LTPA (walking and activities of moderate and vigorous intensity) was classified as inactive, insufficiently active, weekend warrior, or regularly active based on the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines on physical activity. The analyses were stratified by self-reported race/skin color (White students vs. students from other racial/ethnic groups). Prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated using Poisson regression. The prevalence of positive SRH was 44.6% among White students and 41.1% among other racial/ethnic group students. Among White students, positive SRH was associated with walking performed at weekend warrior (PR = 2.08; 95% CI: 1.33–3.24) and regular levels (PR = 1.51; 95% CI: 1.06–2.14), as well as with vigorous-intensity activity in a weekend warrior pattern. Among other racial/ethnic group students, positive SRH was associated with regular walking (PR = 1.34; 95% CI:1.05–1.71) and with vigorous-intensity activity at both insufficient and regular levels. LTPA was positively associated with SRH, with variations according to intensity, practice patterns, and race/skin color, indicating that benefits are not homogeneous across groups.
The Effect of Sociodemographic and School Affiliation Moderators on the Association Between Screen Time, Physical Activity, and Body Dissatisfaction in Brazilian Adolescent Girls Drielly Luisi Vitor Santos, Thiago Ferreira de Sousa, Aline de Jesus Santos Adolescents, 2025 Physical activity practice and excessive screen time affect adolescent girls’ body satisfaction and body image. This study aimed to estimate the association between screen time and physical activity in relation to body dissatisfaction and body image among girls from different Brazilian regions, considering both the direct effect and the influence of sociodemographic characteristics and school affiliation. This is a cross-sectional study based on secondary data analysis. The outcomes were body dissatisfaction and body image dissatisfaction due to excessive thinness and excessive fat. Physical activity and screen time were independent variables. The moderating variables included sociodemographic characteristics and school affiliation. Direct effects were observed in active girls with a lower odds ratio (OR) of dissatisfaction due to excessive thinness (Southeast region, OR: 0.56, 95% CI: 0.34–0.90; South region, OR: 0.43, 95% CI: 0.19–0.43), whereas those with high screen times were more likely to report dissatisfaction due to excessive fat (Southeast region, OR: 1.80, 95% CI: 1.35–2.40; Northeast region, OR: 1.97, 95% CI: 1.28–3.03). Effect modification was observed based on sociodemographic characteristics and school affiliation. These behaviors were directly associated with body dissatisfaction, and age, school affiliation, skin color, and maternal education were important moderators of the relationship between physical activity and screen time.
Relation between insufficient physical activity, smoking, inadequate food, and alcohol consumption among university students in Minas Gerais, Brazil Gildeene Silva Farias, Dayana Chaves Franco, Aline de Jesus Santos, Alynne Christian Ribeiro Andaki, Silvio Aparecido Fonseca, et al. Revista Brasileira De Cineantropometria E Desempenho Humano, 2025 The aim of this study was to investigate the combinations between insufficient physical activity, smoking, inadequate food and alcohol consumption, as well as sociodemographic and university affiliation characteristics associated with aggregations among university students at a higher education institution in Minas Gerais, Brazil. This is a cross-sectional study that was carried out with university students attending undergraduate courses at a federal institution. Data were obtained through questionnaires. Risk behaviors (insufficient physical activity, smoking, irregular fruit/vegetable consumption, and alcohol consumption) were classified into 16 combinations and the ratios between observed and expected prevalences were analyzed. The outcome was the aggregations of health risk factors that exceeded the expected prevalences. The prevalence ratios (PR) estimated by Poisson regression, the crude and adjusted analyses were used to verify the presence of associations. The significance level was 5%. Participated 1,110 university students. Of the 16 combinations, two exceeded values, the absence and presence of all behavioral risk factors. There were stronger associations for the absence of risk factors for university students in the health area (PR= 2.07; 95%CI: 1.43–2.99) and a lower occurrence for students in the daytime study period (PR = 0.63; 95%CI: 0.43-0.96). It is concluded that there were higher prevalences above the expected for the combinations of four risk behaviors among university students and regarding the absence of the studied behavioral factors. There was an association with a higher occurrence of absence of risk factors for students of Health Sciences and a greater combination of risk factors on daytime college students.
Prevalence and factors associated with active commuting among university students in the state of Bahia Emanuele Dos Santos Silva, Thiago Ferreira de Sousa, Silvio Aparecido Fonseca Revista Brasileira De Cineantropometria E Desempenho Humano, 2025 The objective was to estimate the prevalence, and the behavioral, sociodemographic, and environmental factors associated with active commuting (AC) to/from university in students from the state of Bahia. Methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted in 2019 with 1.506 students from federal universities (UFs) with campuses in the state of Bahia. The outcome of the study was the AC to/from the university. The independent variables were traffic violence, Human Development Index (HDI), sex, social class, work/internship, marital status and age group, university time, study shift, study workload, leisure-time physical activity (LPA), sitting time and sleep time. Association estimates were employed via Odds Ratio (OR), complemented by the 95% confidence interval (CI95%), through multilevel logistic regression for mixed effects. The prevalence of AC was 19.7%. University students of social class D/E were more likely to perform the AC (OR=1.992; CI: 1.273-3.116), on the other hand, university students who worked/interned (OR=0.732; CI: 0.598-0.895) and were inactive in leisure (OR=0.672; CI: 0.488-0.925) were less likely to perform the AC. The higher the HDI of the cities where the UFs are located, the lower the chances of AC (OR=0.669; CI: 0.505-0.886). Concluded that approximately twenty out of every one hundred students performed the AC to the university. It was observed that the socio-environmental context related to the HDI of the cities and individual aspects, such as social class, work/internship, and AFL, were associated with the AC.
