The purpose of this research is to develop advance conducting material blended with metal oxides that held both conducting and antimicrobial properties and due to this, applicable in many biomedical fields. The synthesis of nanoparticles of copper oxide (CuO) is performed by the chemical co-precipitation method and the synthesis of pure polyaniline (PANI) and PANI-CuO nanocomposites were performed by using in-situ chemical oxidative synthesis. The structural analysis was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Ultraviolet – Visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectrometry. The peaks obtained in spectra validate the fabrication of desired materials. The average particle size of synthesized materials was calculated using the Debye Scherrer formula, which was found in the nanoscale range. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) images explored the morphology of CuO and PANI-CuO composite. The direct current (DC) conductivity measurement of samples was performed by the four-probe method for various temperatures. The values showed an increase of electrical conductivity in the composite as compared to PANI and supported the metallic nature of the composite. The antibacterial activity of composites was performed by disk diffusion method using Bacillus subtilis (Gram + ve bacteria) and Escherichia coli (Gram–ve bacteria) and the results are encouraging.

  • PAni/Fe<inf>3</inf>O<inf>4</inf>nanocomposite coating over cadmium using microwave energy

Corrosion resistance and wear resistance are important functional characteristics of engineering materials. There is constant research going on in the field of surface engineering to enhance these properties for the use of components in several engineering applications. In addition, the focus of the surface engineering research is to develop novel coating materials and to explore new processes or techniques. Conducting polymer coatings over the metallic surfaces have been extensively studied owing to their corrosion–resistant property. These coatings are primarily obtained using chemical and electrochemical deposition processes. In this paper, an innovative technique based on microwave irradiation is presented for developing a layer of conducting polymer-based nanocomposite on the cadmium substrate. The conducting polymer nanocomposite was prepared in-situ and comprised of a combination of polyaniline (PAni) and Fe3O4. Fe3O4 has been added to enhance the magnetic properties of the conducting polymer. The powdered nanocomposite was spread onto the metal substrate and was subjected to the microwave irradiation which resulted in the coating of the substrate. Characterization of the coated specimen has been carried out using Fourier transform IR (FT-IR) spectroscopy to check the efficacy of microwave processing. The presence of functional groups of polyaniline over the substrate reveals the presence of a thin layer of the nanocomposite. The study has opened up avenues for researchers to explore the energy saving microwave-assisted green processing technique for the coating application.

The study of electroactive conjugated polymers is an emerging field in material science. The nanocomposites of conjugated conducting polymers with metal oxide give rise to significant properties and applicable as smart materials in technological applications. The present paper reports the synthesis of aluminium oxide nanoparticles by chemical method, synthesis of pure PANI and PANI – Al2O3 nanocomposites by using in-situ chemical oxidative synthesis. The structural analysis was carried out by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy and X ray diffraction studies. The peaks obtained in spectra validate the synthesis of desired materials. The average particle size of fabricated materials was calculated using Scherrer formula, which was found in nanometer range. The four-probe technique was used for measurement of DC conductivity of samples. The antimicrobial activity of composites was performed with disk diffusion method using Bacillus subtilis (Gram +ve bacteria) and Escherichia coli (Gram –ve bacteria).

Double walled TiO2 nanotubes have been synthesized by two probe anodization method on highly pure Titanium (Ti) substrate. FESEM and XRD analyses revealed the morphological and structural properties of the as-synthesized double walled TiO2 nanotubes. Investigation of their field emission characteristics in a planar diode configuration at a base pressure of 1 x 10 mbar has been done. The turn-on field defined for the emission current density of 10 μA/cm is found to be 2.1 V/μm. As the field is increased further to 2.95 V/μm maximum, a current density of 890 μA/cm is achieved. Current-time (I-t) measurement at a preset value of 1 μA emission current for the duration of 3 h demonstrates a robust emission current stability. The observed low turn-on field and stable electron emission makes the double walled TiO2 nanotubes a suitable emitter for various electronics devices applications.
