Takaaki Sato is a researcher in the Department of Me- Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics at the University of Pennsylvania and at the Institute of Industrial Science at the University of Tokyo. Takaaki Sato received his B.Sc. and M.A. in Physics and Engineering from Seikei University in 2007, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tokyo in 2011 under the supervision of Dr. Hiroyuku Fujita. His thesis is titled: “Real-time TEM observation of atomic-level shear deformation for revealing the mechanism of solid lubrication”. He works at the intersection of mechanics, materials, and physics to conduct research into nanotribology (the atomic-scale origins of friction, adhesion, lubrication, and wear), nanomechanics, nanostructured ma-
materials, surface science, and in situ observation methods. His primary focus is on using TEM, MEMS, and other surface characterization techniques to probe the fundamental nature of materials in contact. Recently he has fo
