  • A nexus of crude oil prices and real effective exchange rate movement in Thailand
Watchara Pechdin, Pongsun Bunditsakulchai, Tien Diem Nguyen Ho
Journal of Infrastructure Policy and Development, 2024
The impact of crude oil price fluctuations on the real effective exchange rate (REER) has been widely debated, but specific evidence, particularly for developing countries in Southeast Asia, is scarce and inconclusive. This issue, especially concerning both short- and long-term relationships, remains inadequately addressed, affecting these countries for risk management related to oil price fluctuations. This study aims to fill this gap by examining these relationships in Thailand context to provide more evidence on how the REER in Southeast Asia responds to changes in crude oil prices. Monthly data of crude oil prices in Dubai market and the Thai baht REER from 2000 to 2019 were employed. Johansen co-integration test and Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) were used for analyzing long-term and short-term relationships, respectively. The results indicate a significant negative long-term relationship between crude oil prices and the REER, with a 0.31% reduction in the REER for every 1% increase in the real price of oil. However, in the short term, VECM analysis reveals significant movements in the REER in response to external shocks. On average from 2000–2019, the significant fluctuations in the REER are quickly alleviated and adjusted to its long-run equilibrium, typically by 2% in the following month following external shocks such as crude oil price fluctuations. Given these findings, which highlight the long-term relationship between the REER and crude oil prices and its short-term adjustment, it is suggested that when there is a shock from the crude oil prices, the government can strengthen short-term oil price controls or monetary subsidies to mitigate the extensive repercussions of energy market fluctuations, as such interventions would have a lesser impact on the long-term equilibrium of the REER.
  • Narratives of Chinese policies on route R3A tourism development: A question in collaboration
Watchara Pechdin, Sorasich Swangsilp, Sumalee Sukdanont, Tien Diem Nguyen Ho
Journal of Infrastructure Policy and Development, 2024
The R3A Route represents a collaborative initiative involving the governments of Thailand, Laos, and China aimed at bolstering connectivity along the North-South Economic Corridor, as a vital component of the Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Cooperation Program (GMS). Since its inception in 2008, this endeavor has substantially enhanced the logistical framework between Thailand, Laos, and China. However, it has also revealed an imbalance in the benefit distribution of value chains within the tourism industry. One of the fact that, local stakeholders in each country often leverage their home country’s advantages, leading to the exploitation of counterparts with lower capacity in other nations. This unfair utilization goes against the initial intentions of fostering collaboration among these countries. Given China and its development as a starting point for tourism and its popularity among tourists traveling this route, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of China’s policy and insights of its influences on R3A tourism development in Laos and Thailand. The study constructs a content analysis with an umbrella of stakeholder analysis based on reliable data and is cross-verified through data triangulation. The findings lead to recommendations aimed at making Thai-Lao-Chinese tourism cooperation more sustainable and effective.
  • Does livelihood capital influence the livelihood diversification strategies of smallholder rice farmers? Evidence from the Mekong Delta of Vietnam

    Cogent Economics and Finance, 2024
Climate and other shocks threaten the livelihoods of rice farmers in Vietnam, forcing them to diversify their livelihoods. This study investigates the diversification strategies of rice farmers in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. Based on 405 rice farming households in Tien Giang, Dong Thap, and Can Tho provinces, the results of the Hausman test showed that the four strategies, namely rice farming only, on-farm activities (rice farming and other farming activities), rice and non-farm activities, and on-farm and non-farm activities, were used in this study. A multinomial logit regression was used to measure the influence of rice farmers’ livelihood capital on their adaptive strategies. The results show that human capital (gender, household size, dependency ratio), social capital (extension visits, cooperatives’ membership), natural capital (farm size, land rent, access to water for farming), physical capital (distance to markets, distance to district capital), and financial capital (fixed asset, access to credit, and government support) are significant factors affecting households’ diversification decisions. Intervention programs should encourage farmers, especially women, to participate in cooperative and extension visits to improve their skills, access to credit, and income opportunities.Vietnamese rice households in the Mekong Delta are forced to diversify their sources of income due to the threat posed by climate change. The diversification tactics used by rice households in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta are examined in this study. The Hausman test results, based on 405 rice households in the provinces of Tien Giang, Dong Thap, and Can Tho, indicated that four strategies were employed in this study: rice farming only, on-farm activities (rice farming and other farming activities), rice and non-farm activities, and on-farm and non-farm activities. The impact of livelihood capital on the adaptive strategies of rice farmers was assessed using a multinomial logit model. The findings showed that all major forms of capital—financial, social, physical, and natural—play substantial roles in influencing households’ decisions to diversify. In order to increase farmers’ skills, credit availability, and income prospects, intervention programs should urge farmers—especially women farmers—to take part in cooperative and extension visits.
  • One Health in Agricultural Sectors in Thailand, Lao PDR, and Vietnam: Interconnectedness Between Awareness and Socioeconomic Factors

ObjectiveThe study aims to analyze the interconnectedness of farmers’ socioeconomic factors and their awareness of the One Health framework.MethodThis study conducted a survey with 1,166 observations across Thailand, Lao, and Vietnam and employed binary logit regression for data analysis. Odds ratios were used for interpreting the results.ResultsThe results indicated that certain socioeconomic factors—particularly household income, age, gender roles within the household, and household size—significantly influenced farmers’ awareness and engagement with One Health literacy. Awareness levels varied across the three countries: for example, the composition of adults in Thai farming households was correlated with awareness of environmental health and infectious diseases. In Lao PDR, gender was significantly associated with awareness of animal health, while in Vietnam, it was linked to awareness of animal disease transmission.ConclusionThese determinants contribute to the application of a more integrated One Health approach among farmers in these areas.

    Sustainable Futures, 2023
This study examined the effect of adopting sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) practices on food companies' sustainable performance and food quality assurance in Bangkok, Thailand. Primary data were collected through questionnaires administered to 126 food companies in Bangkok. The Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR) was used to examine the effect of internal and external sustainable supply chain management practices on sustainable performances. The Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) was employed to examine the effect of sustainable performances on the food company's quality assurance. The study's empirical result revealed that internal and external SSCM techniques positively influence the companies' financial, environmental, and social performances. The sustainable performance indicators (i.e. environmental, financial, and social) positively influence quality assurance. This study provides recommendations for adopting SSCM practices by food companies in Thailand.

  • Climate change and livelihood vulnerability of the rice farmers in the North Central Region of Vietnam: A case study in Nghe An province, Vietnam
Phuong T. Tran, Bien T. Vu, Son T. Ngo, Vien D. Tran, Tien D.N. Ho
    Environmental Challenges, 2022
This study aimed at assessing the livelihoods of rice households in Nghe An province of Vietnam. The study was undertaken through household surveys of 396 households in three districts of this province. In this study, the livelihood vulnerability index (LVI) was used for investigating the level of vulnerability to climate change of rice households in Nghe An province, pairwise correlation matrix and beta regression were used for examining the factors affecting the level of vulnerability climate stresses. Overall, the computed LVI showed that respondents were slightly vulnerable to climate change, indicating that households in the study area still had capacities to cope with the change. The beta regression analysis showed that floods, droughts, cold spells, irrigation, institutional factors, and socio-demographic factors were the major factors significantly affecting rice households’ vulnerability in Nghe An province. The findings suggest the need to strengthen the social network between farmers, agricultural cooperatives, and local governments to enhance farmers’ capacity to cope with climate-induced issues, especially floods and droughts in the coastal area. Findings also imply the need to provide farmers with input subsidies, effective irrigation systems, training, and consultant services to reduce households’ vulnerability. Furthermore, this study also highlights the need to promote official financial services with low interest rates in adopting adaptation strategies for sustainable development of the whole region.
