Growth and ethanol yield responses of sweet sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) moench) varieties to nitrogen fertilizer rates O Olugbemi, C M Aboyeji, J A. T Olofintoye, E K Eifediyi Journal of Agricultural Sciences Sri Lanka, 2018 Purpose: Soils of the experimental area are low in vital nutrients such as nitrogen. Fallow is no longer possible because of increasing pressure on arable land. The limited available chemical fertilizers must be inevitably and judiciously used for optimum yield. The study was carried out to assess the response of sweet sorghum varieties to varying nitrogen fertilizer (N) rates.Research Method: Sweet sorghum varieties (NTJ-2, 64 DTN, SW Makarfi 2006 and SW Dansadau 2007) were alloted to the main plots and nitrogen fertilizer (0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 kg N ha-1) to the sub-plots of a split-plot design, in three replicates. Data on growth and yield characteristics were collected and analysed.Findings: Variations were observed among the four varieties of sweet sorghum; SW Dansadau 2007 had greater growth and yield characteristics. N fertilizer had positive effects on the growth characteristics and ethanol yield of the crop. 80 kg N ha-1 resulted in increase of most parameters and ethanol yield, beyond which there was either no significant difference or a drop in the values of these parameters. Thus the use of 80 kg N ha-1 would result in optimum yield of sweet sorghum in the study area.Limitations: The requirement of 80 kg N ha-1 may not be generalized for the entire southern guinea savanna agro-ecological of Nigeria as the study was carried out only in one location.Originality/Value: These findings would assist farmers in the study area identify the most promising sweet sorghum variety and the optimum fertilizer rate for its production.

Effects of Nitrogen Application on Growth and Ethanol Yield of Sweet Sorghum [ Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] Varieties Oluwatoyin Olugbemi, Yekeen Abiola Ababyomi Advances in Agriculture, 2016 A study was carried out in two locations, Ilorin (8° 29′ N; 4° 35′ E; about 310 m asl) and Ejiba (8° 17′ N; 5° 39′ E; about 246 m asl), at the Southern Guinea Savannah agroecological zone of Nigeria to assess the effect of nitrogen fertilizer on the growth and ethanol yield of four sweet sorghum varieties (NTJ-2, 64 DTN, SW Makarfi 2006, and SW Dansadau 2007). Five N fertilizer levels (0, 40, 80, 120, and 160 kg ha−1) were used in a 4 × 5 factorial experiment, laid out in split-plots arrangement. The application of nitrogen fertilizer was shown to enhance the growth of sweet sorghum as observed in the plant height, LAI, CGR, and other growth indices. Nitrogen fertilizer application also enhanced the ethanol yield of the crop, as variations in growth parameters and ethanol yield were observed among the four varieties studied. The variety SW Dansadau 2007 was observed as the most promising in terms of growth and ethanol yield, and the application of 120 kg N ha−1resulted in the best ethanol yield at the study area.
Effects of Curing Period of Livestock Droppings on the Growth and Yield of Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) Varieties S. Y. Abdulmaliq, Y. A. Abayomi, M. O. Aduloju, O. Olugbemi International Journal of Agronomy, 2016 A field study was carried out across two cropping seasons (2010 and 2011) to explore the effects of curing periods of cow dung and poultry droppings used in soil amendment on the performance of two okra (Abelmoschus esculentusL.) varieties: NHAe 47-3 and LD 88-1. The effects of cow dung and poultry droppings cured for 3, 6, and 9 weeks were compared to that of NPK fertilizer (100 kg N ha−1and 60 kg ha−1each of P2O5and K2O) and a control (no amendment). The application of organic amendment cured for 3 to 6 weeks enhanced the growth and yield of okra when compared with inorganic fertilizer or the unamended soil across the two cropping seasons. Based on this outcome, the use of adequate quantity of livestock droppings cured for 3–6 weeks, in case of poultry dropping, and for 6 weeks, in case of cow dung, is recommended as an alternative to inorganic fertilizer. The variety NHAe 47-4 was also demonstrated to give better yield (1.73 and 2.18 t ha−1) than LD 88-1 (1.63 and 1.80 t ha−1) in the years 2010 and 2011, respectively.
