  • Janus: A Dual-Mask Attention Transformer for Log-based Anomaly Detection in Cellular Networks

    Modern cellular networks, such as 5G, generate complex operational logs that challenge traditional anomaly detection techniques. Existing deep learning approaches, including standard transformer models, treat logs as monolithic text streams and lack the specialization to reason about procedural correctness and semantic integrity, a key requirement for telecommunications software. We tackle this problem in our system Janus, a log-based anomaly detection system featuring a novel Single-Pass Dual-Mask (SPDM) attention mechanism. Janus introduces a domain-specific inductive bias by partitioning attention heads into two groups. Global heads learn the valid temporal grammar of 5G procedures using a causal mask, and local heads perform fine-grained audits on the consistency of critical data fields using a tag-based semantic mask. A multi-stage curriculum learning framework progressively adapts Janus from domain pre-training to discriminative fine-tuning and learns to detect complex, real-world software failures. Experimental evaluation with several 5G log datasets demonstrates that Janus consistently outperforms prior systems, achieving on average a 3× performance improvement over a DNN-based baseline and an 80% gain over a transformer-based system.

    Smart cities (SCs) are being constructed with the huge placement of the Internet of Things (IoT). Real-time enhancements to life quality based on comfort and efficiency. The key concerns in most SCs that immediately impact network performance are security and privacy. Numerous approaches are proposed for secure data transmission, but the current methods do not provide high accuracy and it provide high computational time. To resolve these problems, an Auto-metric Graph Neural Network for Attack Detection and Secure Data Transmission using Optimized Enhanced Identity-Based Encryption in IoT (AGNN-AWHSE-ST-IoT) is proposed. Primarily, the input data is taken from the NSL-KDD dataset. The input data is gathered with the aid of NSL-KDD is pre-processed using three steps, crisp data conversion, splitting, and normalization. Then the Pre-processed input is fed into the Colour Harmony Algorithm (CHA) based feature selection to select the important features. After feature selection, the preferred features are given to the AGNN classifier. After classifying, the data is given to Enhanced Identity-Based Encryption (EIBE), and it is optimized using Wild Horse Optimizer (WHO) for transmitting the data more safely. The outcomes of the normal data are displayed using the LCD monitor. The AGNN-AWHSE-ST-IoT method is implemented in PYTHON. The AGNN-AWHSE-ST-IoT method attains 8.888%, 13.953%, 19.512% higher accuracy, 2.105%, 6.593%, 8.988% higher cumulative accuracy, 54.285%, 54.285%, 52.941% lower encryption time, 8.2%, 3.3%, 6.9% lower decryption time, 11.627%, 10.344%, 6.666% higher security level and 60.869%, 70% and 64% lower computational time than the existing approaches such as SBAS-ST-IoT, BDN-GWMNN-ST-IoT and DNN-LSTM-ST-IoT respectively.
  • Securing the Cloud-Native 5G Control Plane

    The shift to cloud-native architectures in the 5G control plane introduces significant challenges in securing complex network functions deployed as microservices. Traditional security mechanisms, such as service mesh architectures and kernel-level solutions, often suffer from protocol limitations, high overhead, or incomplete inter-service encryption. Therefore, we present Zero Trust X Security Enforcement Microservice (ZTX-SEM), a protocol-agnostic zero-trust security solution designed specifically for cloud-native deployments. We propose a lightweight packet interception mechanism that operates across all protocols, a proactive authentication strategy that reduces latency and ensures continuous readiness, and an optimized secret key lookup that accelerates encrypted communication processing. Our experiments on a Kubernetes-deployed 5G control plane (core) demonstrate that ZTX-SEM outperforms existing solutions such as Istio, achieving 75% and 28% reductions in resource utilization and session setup times, respectively.

    Emerging multimedia applications often use a wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) infrastructure to stream content. These Wi-Fi deployments vary vastly in terms of their system configurations. In this paper, we take a step toward characterizing the Quality of Experience (QoE) of volumetric video streaming over an enterprise-grade Wi-Fi network to: (i) understand the impact of Wi-Fi control parameters on user QoE, (ii) analyze the relation between Quality of Service (QoS) metrics of Wi-Fi networks and application QoE, and (iii) compare the QoE of volumetric video streaming to traditional 2D video applications. We find that Wi-Fi configuration parameters such as channel width, radio interface, access category, and priority queues are important for optimizing Wi-Fi networks for streaming immersive videos.

    The increasing popularity of video streaming and conferencing services have altered the nature of Internet traffic. In this paper, we take a first step toward quantifying the impact of this changing nature of traffic on the Quality of Experience (QoE) of popular video streaming and conferencing applications. We first analyze the traffic characteristics of these applications and of backbone links, and show how simple multipath routing may adversely impact application QoE. To mitigate this problem, we propose a new routing path selection approach, inspired by the TCP timeout computation algorithm, that uses both the average and variation of path load. Preliminary results show that this approach improves application QoE by on average 14% and packet latency by 11% for video streaming and conferencing applications, respectively.1
