Decentralised architectures in smart cities: A comprehensive survey of technologies, opportunities, and challenges Rafael Z. Frantz, Antonia M. Reina-Quintero, José Bocanegra, Fabricia Roos-Frantz, Sandro Sawicki, Regis Schuch, Rafael Corchuelo, Valdemar Graciano-Neto, Carlos Molina-Jimenez, Jon Crowcroft Pervasive and Mobile Computing, 2026 Centralised architecture models are often adopted in the development of smart cities to take advantage of the technologies provided by dominant companies such as Google, Meta, and Amazon. This approach often comes with significant drawbacks, such as (i) application developers becoming dependent on the policies and rules imposed by large companies, which are subject to change, and (ii) users having their data collected and used haphazardly, and often without authorisation, which can undermine the trust that users place in the solution. Infrastructure for smart cities should, therefore, incorporate decentralised technologies that satisfy or reinforce important quality attributes such as trustworthiness, privacy, and security. The main objective of this article is to survey and discuss how the services of a smart city can be implemented using decentralised architectures; we explain the advantages and disadvantages of decentralised architectures and emerging technologies. We review the specialised literature and compile a set of emerging technologies that are essential to conceive a decentralised architectural solution for smart cities. The current state-of-the-art in decentralisation shows that this model can be implemented with current technologies and help to satisfy the quality attributes mentioned above, and potentially reinforce the degree of trustworthiness of the solution. We also propose a four-dimension guideline that functions as a conceptual driver for structuring actions for researchers, system architects, policymakers, and city authorities in the design, evaluation, and long-term maintenance of decentralised smart cities, thereby enhancing their capacity to address escalating urban challenges. We conclude that the set of technologies discussed in this article has the potential to be reused and replicated across smart cities. • Choice between C-architecture and D-architecture for smart cities. • Concerns about interoperability, privacy, vendor lock-in, and sustainability. • Decentralisation offers improved interoperability, privacy, and sustainability. • Approach to decentralised digital identity, permissions, and integration solutions.
Towards Repositories of Emergent Behaviors: an Initial Repository and a Supporting Tool Kanan Castro Silva, Arlindo Rodrigues Galvão Filho, Aparna Kumari, Flávio Horita, Valdemar Vicente Graciano Neto International Conference on System of Systems Engineering Sose, 2025 Systems-of-Systems (SoS) are composed of independent systems called constituents that, together, achieve a set of goals by means of emergent behaviors. Those behaviors can be deliberately planned as a combination of the individual functionalities (herein named as features) provided by the constituents. Currently, SoS engineers heavily rely on their own creativity and prior experience to combine the features and design the behaviors. In that sense, the main contribution of this paper is introducing a repository of emergent behaviors of SoS for supporting the engineering of behaviors in a SoS. An initial dataset was elaborated from a systematic mapping to feed the mechanism and a web-application was developed. Results revealed that the algorithm developed is capable of predicting feasible emergent behaviors for different sets of constituents, shedding light on the pressing need for more repositories of emerging SoS behaviors across multiple domains to feed the AI mechanisms that have emerged to assist in SoS engineering.
Are SoIS the Majority of SoS? An Exploratory Investigation of Subtypes of Systems-of-Systems in the Literature Gilmar Teixeira Junior, Ana Clara Araujo Gomes Da Silva, Rodrigo Pereira Dos Santos, Mohamad Kassab, Valdemar Vicente Graciano Neto Proceedings 2025 IEEE ACM 13th International Workshop on Software Engineering for Systems of Systems and Software Ecosystems Sesos 2025, 2025 The growing complexity and interconnectivity of modern systems have led to the evolution of Systems-of-Systems (SoS), which integrate independent systems to achieve shared goals. Among SoS subtypes, Systems-of-Information Systems (SoIS) and Cyber-Physical Systems-of-Systems (CPSoS) are gaining attention, although SoIS remains underexplored in literature. This study examines SoS types in current research, identifying key characteristics that differentiate SoIS from general SoS, particularly their reliance on information systems to enable data-driven interoperability and dynamic coordination. From a rapid review, we highlight SoIS’s critical role in domains such as smart cities and smart grids, in which real-time data exchange and system interoperability are essential. Our findings underscore the need for targeted methodologies to advance SoIS-specific research and provide a foundation for future exploration of this SoS class.
Systems-of-Systems for Environmental Sustainability: A Systematic Mapping Study Ana Clara Araújo Gomes da Silva, Gilmar Teixeira, Lívia Mancine C. de Campos, Renato F. Bulcão-Neto, Valdemar Vicente Graciano Neto International Conference on System of Systems Engineering Sose, 2025 Environmental sustainability in Systems-of-Systems (SoS) is an emerging field that seeks to integrate software-intensive systems to promote the efficient management of natural resources. While systematic reviews address sustainability in the context of Smart Cities (a category of SoS), a systematic study synthesizing the existing knowledge on environmental sustainability applied to SoS in general did not exist. Although literature includes other types of sustainability, such as financial and social, this study focuses on environmental sustainability, analyzing how SoS contribute to sustainable practices such as carbon emission reduction, energy efficiency, and biodiversity conservation. We conducted a Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) to identify the application domains of SoS in sustainability, the challenges faced, and research opportunities. We planned and executed a research protocol including an automated search over four scientific databases. From a set of 926 studies retrieved, we selected, analyzed, and reported the results of 39 relevant studies. Our findings reveal that most studies focus on Smart Cities and Smart Grids, while applications such as sustainable agriculture and wildfire prevention are less explored. We identified challenges such as system interoperability, scalability, and data governance. Finally, we propose future research directions for SoS and environmental sustainability.
'Is It Responsible?'Emerging Results on Comparing Guardrails for Harm Mitigation in LLM-Enhanced Software Applications Manoel Veríssimo Dos Santos Neto, Valdemar Vicente Graciano Neto, Arlindo Rodrigues Galvão Filho, Mohamad Kassab, Edson OliveiraJr International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering and Measurement, 2025 Background: The rapid adoption of Large Language Models (LLMs) in software engineering, such as in customer service chatbots, has brought substantial benefits but also significant risks. Biased, inappropriate, or harmful responses may occur when integrating LLMs as commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components into user-facing applications. Aims: This paper aims to present emerging results from an exploratory study that compares commercial guardrail frameworks, assessing their effectiveness in filtering inappropriate content during chat interactions. Method: We empirically evaluated three guardrail frameworks LLM Guard, Llama Guard, and OpenAI Moderation - using two datasets containing toxic and offensive content. Results: The frameworks achieved high accuracy for one dataset (over 90%) but underperformed in other metrics, indicating that toxic or dangerous content could still reach users in certain scenarios, such as deployment in chatbots. Conclusions: These findings <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$h$</tex> ighlight <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$t$</tex> he <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$n$</tex> eed <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$f$</tex> or further improvements in guardrail frameworks and provide insights for researchers and practitioners to support the selection of appropriate solutions for enhancing harm mitigation in LLMbased applications.
Large Language Model for Qualitative Research: A Systematic Mapping Study Cauã Ferreira Barros, Bruna Borges Azevedo, Valdemar Vicente Graciano Neto, Mohamad Kassab, Marcos Kalinowski, Hugo Alexandre D. Do Nascimento, Michelle C.G.S.P. Bandeira Proceedings 2025 IEEE ACM International Workshop on Methodological Issues with Empirical Studies in Software Engineering Wsese 2025, 2025 The exponential growth of text-based data in domains such as healthcare, education, and social sciences has outpaced the capacity of traditional qualitative analysis methods, which are time-intensive and prone to subjectivity. Large Language Models (LLMs), powered by advanced generative AI, have emerged as transformative tools capable of automating and enhancing qualitative analysis. This study systematically maps the literature on the use of LLMs for qualitative research, exploring their application contexts, configurations, methodologies, and evaluation metrics. Findings reveal that LLMs are utilized across diverse fields, demonstrating the potential to automate processes traditionally requiring extensive human input. However, challenges such as reliance on prompt engineering, occasional inaccuracies, and contextual limitations remain significant barriers. This research highlights opportunities for integrating LLMs with human expertise, improving model robustness, and refining evaluation methodologies. By synthesizing trends and identifying research gaps, this study aims to guide future innovations in the application of LLMs for qualitative analysis.
