  • Brands as eigenforms: how recursive knowledge sharing creates value
Gandolfo Dominici, Constantin Bratianu, Valerio Lacagnina
    Journal of Knowledge Management, 2025
Purpose The purpose of this study is to clarify how brands accumulate value through recursive knowledge loops linking firms, customers and wider stakeholders, by framing brand value as an eigenform: a pattern that is dynamically stable yet continuously reproduced across rational, emotional and spiritual knowledge fields. Design/methodology/approach This study offers a conceptual integration of second-order cybernetics with tri-field knowledge theory. A maximum–minimum fuzzy model is introduced to formalise how dispersed interpretations converge, stabilise or fragment. Findings Brand meaning consolidates when signals from the rational, emotional and spiritual fields are coherent and repeatedly reproduced; misalignment propagates fragmentation. The fuzzy formulation yields a practical diagnostic of cross-field coherence and highlights which field is most vulnerable at a given time. Research limitations/implications This conceptual study paves the way towards empirical operationalisation; avenues include longitudinal community data, agent-based simulations and cross-cultural comparisons of field weightings. Practical implications Managers can tune process/channel design, community/interface architecture and purpose/governance mechanisms to sustain a coherent eigenform creation; tracking a fuzzy-based coherence index can surface tipping points and guide timely interventions. Originality/value This study specifies the cybernetic engine that translates distributed dialogue into value-in-use and contributes a mathematically tractable tool for monitoring convergence under uncertainty.

  • An integrated fuzzy-stochastic model for revenue management: The hospitality industry case

    Tourism Economics, 2016
Revenue management aims at improving the performance of an organization by selling the right product/service to the right customer at the right time. This task is very dependent on uncontrollable external factors. In the hospitality industry, rooms of the hotel represent perishable assets and fixed capacities at the same time. Therefore, in the case of a stochastic process for customers calling in reservations prior to a particular booking date, a common problem for hotels is to devise a policy for maximizing the total expected profit conditional on the set of bookings. We propose a fuzzy model for the hotel revenue management under an uncertain and vague environment. Fuzziness of objective and constraint functions have been incorporated into a stochastic booking model considering multiple-day stays to show the effect of uncertainty on the optimal demand. By changing the relaxation parameters of the objective function, we have found a set of optimal solutions with, in most of the cases, a value of the objective function equal to the optimal solution of the stochastic model, providing several alternative optimal room allocations.
  • Analysis of a database to predict the result of allergy testing in vivo in patients with chronic nasal symptoms

American Journal of Rhinology and Allergy, 2014
Background This article uses the logistic regression model for diagnostic decision making in patients with chronic nasal symptoms. We studied the ability of the logistic regression model, obtained by the evaluation of a database, to detect patients with positive allergy skin-prick test (SPT) and patients with negative SPT. The model developed was validated using the data set obtained from another medical institution. Methods The analysis was performed using a database obtained from a questionnaire administered to the patients with nasal symptoms containing personal data, clinical data, and results of allergy testing (SPT). All variables found to be significantly different between patients with positive and negative SPT (p < 0.05) were selected for the logistic regression models and were analyzed with backward stepwise logistic regression, evaluated with area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic curve. A second set of patients from another institution was used to prove the model. Results The accuracy of the model in identifying, over the second set, both patients whose SPT will be positive and negative was high. The model detected 96% of patients with nasal symptoms and positive SPT and classified 94% of those with negative SPT. Conclusion This study is preliminary to the creation of a software that could help the primary care doctors in a diagnostic decision making process (need of allergy testing) in patients complaining of chronic nasal symptoms.
