• Enhancing concrete durability: Sustainable ternary blends incorporating agricultural and industrial wastes
    Global Nest Journal, 2024

The demand for sustainable concrete in civil infrastructure operations grows by the day, resulting in the use of agricultural and industrial byproducts and controlling high-cost nanomaterials. Ternary blended concrete is an excellent alternative to conventional concrete for long-term development by lowering carbon footprint. Ternary blended concrete is a green and sustainable concrete made from three separate source components to make a binder. The fundamental benefit of ternary mixed concrete is its densely packed particles of various shapes and sizes, resulting in superior characteristics. This study discusses experimental studies that were conducted to assess the durability properties of regular ordinary Portland cement (OPC) concrete and ternary blended concrete containing 1% nano-SiO2 and industrial or agricultural byproducts. Concrete durability is defined as its capacity to sustain a safe degree of serviceability and various environmental exposure circumstances without requiring considerable repair or rehabilitation during its service life. Conventional concrete is prone to cracking because of its low tensile and durability properties. Six potential mixes were investigated in this work: three blends based on industrial byproducts (fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, and metakaolin) and three mixes based on agricultural byproducts (rice husk ash, corncob ash, and sugarcane bagasse ash). This study investigated the durability characteristics such as water permeability, sorptivity, resistance to sulphate, acid attack, and alkaline attack. The experimental test findings were determined to be well within limitations when compared to the requirements specified in the standard/literature. The study also shows that ternary blended concrete with regulated nano-SiO2 enhances durability metrics significantly. Furthermore, energy dispersive spectrophotometry (EDS) measurements show dense phases with high proportions of Si atoms in the substrate's penetration layer. As a result, ternary mixed concrete is strongly advised in structural repair works.

    Cleaner Materials, 2023
High-performance ternary mixed nano-concrete has been extensively utilized in high-rise structures due to its desirable strength, durability, and thermal insulation ability. Additionally, nano-concrete usage is the most current area of research in concrete components. This research investigates the compressive strength, flexural behavior, and micro-structure behavior of nano-SiO2 concrete specimens. This study also evaluates the strength development of mixes combining binary and ternary combinations of agricultural by-products (rice husk ash, corncob ash, and bagasse ash) and industrial by-products (fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, and metakaolin). The cost-efficiency, energy-efficiency, and eco-efficiency of ternary blended nano-concrete with various additives were considered when evaluating their sustainability capabilities. This study aims to improve sustainable high-performance concrete without overutilizing or underutilizing additives. Based on the findings, nano-SiO2 concrete can achieve greater compressive strength ranges of 51 to 70 MPa with binary and ternary admixtures. Furthermore, ternary nano-SiO2 concrete performs more sustainably than other mixes regarding cost-effectiveness, energy use, and CO2 emissions, as do mixes made of sugarcane bagasse ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag.

AA 8079 with variable percentages of peanut shell ash (PSA) was created by stir casting (2.5 percent, 5 percent, 7.5 percent, 10 percent, 12.5 percent, and 15 percent). Compared some of the physical and mechanical properties of the composite material were to the alloy matrix alloy (density; porosity percentage; hardness; wear index; tensile strength; and impact strength). Peanut shell ash reinforcements were found to be distributed uniformly throughout the Aluminum Matrix, with pockets of agglomerated reinforcement particles. The hardness, wear index, and density of the composite were enhanced by adding PSA particles. Compared to the matrix alloy without reinforcement, the composites had lower tensile and impact strengths. Mixture design with Design-Expert (Stat EASY) software package indicated the appropriate matrix and reinforcing combination proportions and how they influenced composites’ studied properties. Composites’ physical and mechanical properties were predicted and optimized using regression models created and the ideal mixture of matrix and reinforcement wt. According to optimization findings, the components for optimal composite characteristics’ responses are 93.48 and 6.52 percent of matrix and reinforcement wt% particles. They can utilize PSA-reinforced AA8079 core materials to make automotive components that need lighter, stackable, and wear-resistant.
