ANALYSING THE ROUTE CHOICES TO ACCESS PUBLIC OPEN SPACES IN HILL CITIES USING SPACE SYNTAX APPROACH Vicky Lalramsangi, Yogesh Kumar Garg, Shashikant Nishant Sharma Journal of Environmental Engineering and Landscape Management, 2026 Public open spaces serve as vital components of urban well-being, offering spaces for recreation, social interaction, and environmental balance. In hill cities, however, the steep terrain and irregular street networks create distinctive challenges for pedestrian accessibility and route selection. This study investigates how users navigate and choose routes to access public open spaces (POS) in the hill city of Aizawl, Mizoram, employing the space syntax approach to analyze spatial configuration and pedestrian movement patterns. By examining route connectivity, visual integration, and topographic influence, the study identifies how spatial hierarchy and elevation differences affect pedestrian safety, comfort, and decision-making. The analysis inte-grates spatial metrics with field observations to reveal critical barriers and preferred pathways that influence accessibility and user experience. The findings highlight the need for designing safe, inclusive, and topographically sensitive pedestrian networks that enhance access to public open spaces. Ultimately, this research advances the discourse on three-dimensional urban morphology in hill cities and provides actionable insights for planners to improve pedestrian mobility and spatial equity in complex urban terrains.
Studying Utility of Public Open Spaces: A Synthesis of Variables Influencing Public Open Spaces Usage Through Systematic Literature Review Vicky Lalramsangi, Yogesh Kumar Garg, Bulbul Shukla Journal of Planning Literature, 2026 Public Open Spaces (POS) have been a subject of interest over the years. However, systematic investigations of their utility are limited. Evaluation of the utility of POS can help inform interventions for urban planning and design, as well as address the issues of underutilization of POS in urban areas. Utility in this context denotes the usability of POS by individuals. A systematic literature review following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines was conducted which identified 68 papers on POS research, focusing on utility, use, usability, and their corresponding factors, indicators, influence, and impact, to extract significant information. The study extracted key themes in POS literature and derived a categorized list of variables that influence POS usage. The results and findings can serve as a database for various methodological approaches, and factors and variables useful for mapping and evaluating the utility of POS, which would inform future empirical work and assist in planning and policymaking.
Route Choices to Access Public Open Spaces in Hill Cities Vicky Lalramsangi, Yogesh Kumar Garg, Shashikant Nishant Sharma Environment and Urbanization Asia, 2025 Public open spaces (POSs) play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of urban life, particularly in hill cities where challenging topography influences accessibility and movement patterns. Space syntax can aid in understanding the route choices of users, evaluating certain routes for improved walkability, and understanding pedestrian behaviour in urban environments, among others. Previous space syntax studies primarily focused on a two-dimensional spatial understanding of cities, but there is a scarcity of studies that explore a three-dimensional perspective. It is observed that the route choices and options in hill cities vary from those of cities in the plains. Therefore, this article intends to study the routes and pedestrian choices to access POS, taking the case of Aizawl, Mizoram (India). Space syntax is used as a methodology for the analysis of the accessibility of open spaces. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of mobility behaviour in complex urban environments and offers practical insights for planners and policymakers in developing sustainable and inclusive urban networks and accessible public spaces in hill cities.
Road Aesthetics and Its Effect on Road Users Anuj Jaiswal, Arshi Parashar, Vicky Lalramsangi Interdisciplinary Approaches to Transportation and Urban Planning, 2024 Aesthetics is synonymous to beauty. Anything which adds beauty to the road is a component of road aesthetics. Like safety, utility and comfort; road aesthetics is of equal importance for our road system. Road aesthetics is having a great value to the public and to the visitors who use it every day and in-turn becomes a field of great interest to planners, engineers, architects and designers. It influences road user's perception and behavior and becomes important as effective time spent on roads has increased manifold with increasing globalization and better transport and communication facilities. This paper investigates into the need and the technicalities of an aesthetically positive road environment taking into consideration human characteristics. A possible relationship between aesthetics and behavior is described through interdisciplinary research within arts & aesthetics, environmental psychology and traffic safety.
