  • Application of the Concepts of Reliability, Resilience and Vulnerability to Bean Production in the Municipality of Garanhuns-PE
Maurício Costa Goldfarb, Dâmolces Aurélio Nascimento da Silva Alves, Irami Buarque do Amazonas, Willames De Albuquerque Soares
Revista Brasileira De Geografia Fisica, 2025
In semi-arid regions, fluctuations in agricultural production, especially by small farmers who use little technology in non-irrigated areas, cause enormous social and economic losses. This is the reality experienced by the vast majority of bean producers in the municipality of Garanhuns (PE). In this case, for the correct direction of policies that aim to reduce these effects, it is essential to use efficient indicators that reflect this reality in the best possible way. In this work, an analysis of bean production in the municipality of Garanhuns is presented, in the period between 1992 and 2021, using the concepts of reliability, resilience and vulnerability, initially proposed by Hashimoto et al.. (1982), for evaluating water supply systems. The similarities observed between these systems, mainly in relation to the dependence on precipitation and the severity related to the lack of production, make this use possible. The indicators were calculated for three different scenarios, characterized by decreasing critical limits of 590, 447 and 300 tons. Reliability in the three scenarios was 70, 80 and 93%. Resilience was 56, 67 and 100%. The vulnerability of approximately 574, 640 and 807 tons. Among other factors, there is a need for measures to increase resilience, extremely low in the first scenario, and especially to reduce vulnerability since in the third scenario the value represents 87% loss of expected production.

Around 30 to 90% of administered antibiotics are not fully metabolized and, therefore, pose risks to the quality of groundwater. In this way, the objective was to understand the sorption behavior of SDZ and SMX, in sandy soil from the Agreste of Pernambuco, to reduce the contamination of groundwater. For this, batch tests were carried out on soils collected in Agreste Pernambuco in two extracts, one at 0 - 20 cm and the other at 20 - 40 cm deep, with and without the addition of biochar. The results showed that the addition of biochar to the soil led to an increase in sorption of both SDZ and SMX, reaching approximately 73 and 123 mg kg-1, in the case of soil from the 0 - 20 cm layer, respectively. In the case of the 20 - 40 cm layer, SDZ sorption exceeded 102 mg kg-1, while for SMX it exceeded 95 mg kg-1. Furthermore, the reaction equilibrium times for SDZ and SMX were the same in the case of soils from the same layer, with or without the addition of biochar, however in the case of SMX these times were shorter (12h). It was also noted that at low pH values (pH < 4) the sorption of the two antibiotics is greater, showing a dependence of sorption on the pH of the solution. As a result, it became clear that these antibiotics have high mobility, indicating an imminent risk of contamination of soil and surface and groundwater.

    Urban Water Journal, 2025
This research aimed to analyse the effect of biochar as a filtering layer in the transfer mechanisms of Sulfadiazine (SDZ), an antibiotic found in urban surface waters of the Recife Metropolitan Region (RMR). Laboratory tests of kinetics and sorption isotherms of SDZ with biochar were conducted in batch conditions. Additionally dynamic adsorption analyse was performed on sand column experiments and breakthrough curves were established. The results suggest that the biochar significantly improves the SDZ sorption rates. The experimental data were best fitted through a pseudo-second-order model, and a markable dependency was observed for the loading capacity of the biochar with the experimental condition of the sorption test, as the loading value without batch (41%) was below the obtained in the batch trials (53%). The simulations also showed that the Convection Dispersion Equation (CDE) and the two site sorption models best fit the observed data, indicating no chemical equilibrium.
  • Evolution of Water Quality in the Una-PE River Basin
Willames Albuquerque Soares, Maurício Goldfarb, Marco Aurelio Holanda
Revista Brasileira De Geografia Fisica, 2023
The quality of aquatic ecosystems is a concern for society, since the interference of water bodies has been notorious, especially those that border large urban centers. Therefore, several parameters have been used to monitor water quality. In this way, the objective was to evaluate the quality of the waters of the Una River basin, Pernambuco, between the years 2001 and 2019. To this end, the values of water temperature (T), hydrogen potential (pH), dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), electrical conductivity (EC), total amount of phosphorus, turbidity and total rainfall volume, available in water quality monitoring reports from river basins from the state of Pernambuco. It can be seen that none of the verified variables showed normal behavior for the trained period. In this way, the tests proposed by Kruskal-Wallis and Nemenyi were used to evaluate the behavior of each parameter. The high values of T, EC, BOD, phosphorus concentrations and turbidity, together with the low DO values found at various times during the years analyzed, indicate an intrusion of sewage (domestic and/or industrial) into the aquatic ecosystem. After a statistical analysis of the indicators, it was concluded that it was not possible to identify improvements in the quality of water in the Una-PE River basin over the last 15 years.
  • Determination of Soil Respiration in a Brazilian Semiarid Region
Willames Albuquerque Soares, Willams Apolo Santos Albuquerque, Marco Aurelio Calixto Ribeiro Holanda
Revista Brasileira De Geografia Fisica, 2023
Palavras-chave: Atividade agrícola, Caatinga, Gases de efeito estufa, Palma forrageira Determination of Soil Respiration in a Brazilian Semiarid Region ABSTRACT The importance of examining gas emissions from various agricultural activities is growing due to recent research relating climate change to an increase in greenhouse gas concentration. However, as is the case with forage cactus (O. ficus-indica), the values for crops found in the caatinga biome resulting from the usage and occupation of the land are not clearly identified, primarily in semi-arid climate zones, such as those in the mesoregion of the Pernambuco agreste. Thus, this article aimed to estimate and compare soil respiration under natural vegetation (Caatinga) and a forage cactus (O. ficus-indica) crop. A carbon dioxide meter and an acrylic cover were used as part of this experimental setup. In both cases, the measurements were carried out within the limits of the Santos e Silva farm, located in the municipality of São Bento do Una, in the Agreste Meridional mesoregion of the state of Pernambuco. The tests produced satisfactory results, being possible to classify the behavior of CO2 concentration inside the cap into six distinct groups. In both cases, soil respiration was satisfactorily estimated. For soil under native vegetation, the values were between 3.7 and 14.3 , with an average value of 7.2. For cultivated soil, soil respiration values were estimated between 2.5 and 11.1 . This difference proved to be statistically significant. Keywords Agricultural activities, Caatinga, Greenhouse das, Forage cactus
  • Fatal fall-from-height accidents: Statistical treatment using the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System – HFACS
Sabrina Santiago Oliveira, Willames de Albuquerque Soares, Bianca M. Vasconcelos
    Journal of Safety Research, 2023
INTRODUCTION: The civil construction industry (CCI) is one of the most dangerous sectors for occupational accidents. Studies conducted in several countries show that occupational accidents involving falls from height are the main cause of deaths in recent years. METHOD: This article analyzed the combinations of causal factors with the highest likelihood of accidents involving falls from height in construction to assist in decision-making. The methodology was divided into four stages: accident collection and sample definition; accident analysis; probability determination; and obtaining the theoretical curve of an accident probability distribution. The methodology was applied to reports of fatal fall-from-height accidents that occurred in the United States between 1997 and 2020. RESULTS: The results show that among the accidents analyzed, the highest probability of fatality is when a roofer aged between 31 and 44 years performs their activity on a roof between 10:00 and 11:59 am. It is also noted that the three causal factors most present in the accidents were: organizational process (97.7%); poor management of worker resources (96.6%); and organizational climate (95.4%). From the probability distribution curve, 68% of the fatal accidents occurred after reaching between 18 and 34 causal factors present in the HFACS method categories.
  • Damage mapping as a tool in the maintenance of architectural heritage: the case of Eufrásio Barbosa Market
Emanoel Silva de Amorim, Girlândia de Morais Sampaio, Lorena Vila Bela Costa, Alberto Casado Lordsleem Júnior, Eliana Cristina Barreto Monteiro, Willames de Albuquerque Soares
    Conservar Patrimonio, 2023
This article aims to propose a method for recording and monitoring pathological manifestations in historic buildings, based on periodic building inspections, mapping and filing of damages. Through the case study carried out at the Eufrásio Barbosa Market, historical centre of the city of Olinda (Brazil) - Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, where the applicability of the proposed method was validated, using three guidelines to support the methodological steps: identification and knowledge of the building, diagnosis and prioritization of interventions. The results showed the evolution process of the pathological manifestations on the facades of historic buildings, indicating a priority matrix to guide the asset manager in the planning of maintenance, matching the needs of the building and available financial resources. As a contribution, there is the use of the methodological triad, being a version adapted from other authors, assisting in the management of the conservation of the built property, besides the awareness of the need to preserve the architectural heritage.
  • Differences between sewage effluent parameters for dry and rainy periods in tropical climate area
Diogo Botelho Correa de Oliveira, Marco Aurélio Calixto Ribeiro de Holanda, Willames de Albuquerque Soares
    Desalination and Water Treatment, 2021
Communication between urban drainage and sewage collection systems can cause various damages to the effluent treatment, such as changing its initial characteristics, overloading the sewage system and its treatment performance. During the 3 y period, for a large sewage treatment plant (345,600 m3 d–1), of the type of activated sludge, the work proposed to identify and evaluate changes in the parameters of inlet flow, pH, temperature, total chlorine, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), sedimentable solids, total suspended solids, oil and greases, nitrate, nitrite ammoniacal nitrogen and efficiency of treatment in two distinct periods: those with the interference of rainwater (rainy season from April to August) and without its influence. From the confidence interval test, in general, the sewage treatment plant showed on rainy days an increase in flow rate (16.5%), dilution in chlorine, BOD, COD, ammoniacal nitrogen and oils and greases, higher acidity on dry days and increased concentration in total suspended solids and nitrite. Therefore, despite the increase in the sewage flow, there was no change in the treatment efficiency in the activated sludge system. Despite the changes, according to European Union, World Health Organization and national legislation (Brazil) recommendations, there were disapprovals in the indicators of oils and greases and ammoniacal nitrogen on days without rain (European Union and Brazil).
  • Evaluations of pedotransfer functions for brazilian soils
Lorena Vila Bela Costa, Willames de Albuquerque Soares
Revista Brasileira De Geografia Fisica, 2021
Evaluations of Pedotransfer Functions for Brazilian SoilsA B S T R A C TPedotransfer Functions (FPT) are mathematical models that estimate difficult-to-measure soil properties through more accessible variables, generating optimization of time and financial resources. In this study, six Pedotransfer Functions, based on the equation of Van Genuchten, analyzed for the prediction of volumetric moisture of Brazilian soils, with data from the global database Soil Data Task. Applied for pressures of 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.10, 0.20, 0.50, 2.50 and 15.0 bar, the resulting values of the equations were compared with the measured volumetric moistures through five statistical parameters: confidence index, mean square error, deviation ratio, modeling efficiency and residual mass coefficient. Of the functions studied it was possible to verify that the FPT proposed by Barros, with 4 parameters, was the one that presented the best results, while that of Rawls and Brakensied obtained the lowest performance. It has been observed that the efficiency of a FPT is related to two factors: a) similarity between the pedological data of the soil studied and those used in the development of the FPT, and b) the amount of variables analyzed. Keywords: Estimation; Soil Physical Properties; Soil Moisture Volumetric
  • Use of field and laboratory methods to estimate soil hydrodynamic properties
    Gercica Macêdo, Willames Soares
    Aguas Subterraneas, 2020
