Financial well-being in Klang Valley: the influence of income, savings and expenses moderated by marital status amid rising living costs Siti Nurul Munawwarah Roslan, Kelvin Yong Ming Lee, Yamunah Vaicondam, Shaliza Alwi, Paul Anthony Mariadas International Journal of Social Economics, 2026 Purpose The focus of this research is to understand the financial situation of people in Malaysia, hence analyzing the impact of financial income level, savings and expenditures in financial well-being. The study also examines moderating effects of marital status on these relationships, particularly when it comes to increasing cost of living. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected through a structured online questionnaire distributed via convenience sampling, targeting B40 and M40 income groups. From the 407 households contacted, 327 provided complete and useable responses. To analyze the data, we used partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Findings The findings show that while income alone did not show a significant relationship with financial well-being in this study, expenses, savings and the interaction between marital status and income were significant factors. These findings underscore the multidimensional nature of financial well-being and highlight the importance of considering interactions and broader financial behaviors in understanding individuals' financial health. Research limitations/implications The subject selection in this research is only the Klang Valley households, and therefore the findings of this study may not be applicable in other areas of Malaysia or any other different economic and culture background countries. This study employed convenience sampling technique to gather information and this may limit generality of the results by developing biases toward the sample. In convenience sampling, the participants are chosen based on their accessibility or willingness to be sampled, thus a possibility of extreme selective sampling. This can potentially lead to selection bias and other deficits rendering the findings as a whole restricted in terms of generalizability to larger population frames who may not be like this latter kind of individual. Originality/value The study seeks to find out the effects of marriage status to the income, saving and spending the theories and models on the financial position of individuals. It demonstrates how the role of family can change influence of money factors on well-being which is a lacking research area. The implications of the findings are expected to be of importance to practitioners such as policymakers, financial advisors and would be investors who are in search for suitable financial management strategies. The study contributes to the theoretical framework of financial behavior and welfare and provide policy implications at local and beyond levels. GHG and Carbon Emission Intensity: Examining Their Impact on Financial Performance Yamunah Vaicondam, Amira Mas Ayu Amir Mustafa, Siti Nurul Munawwarah Roslan, Kelvin Lee Yong Ming, Malarvilly Ramayah International Journal of Energy Economics and Policy, 2025 Governments worldwide have implemented various strategies to reduce carbon emissions, with policies targeting high-emission industries such as energy, transportation, and manufacturing. However, developing Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, face challenges in balancing economic growth with emission reduction efforts due to financial constraints. Despite these challenges, Malaysia has made notable progress through its National Policy on Climate Change, pledging to reduce carbon intensity by 45% by 2030. In response to growing stakeholder demands for sustainability, companies are increasingly adopting sustainable practices to improve their environmental performance, often measured by Carbon Emission Intensity (CEI). CEI is a crucial indicator that offers a relative measure of environmental impact, considering a company’s economic output. The focus on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria has heightened the importance of CEI, particularly as companies with lower CEIs are viewed more favourably by investors. However, the relationship between carbon reduction efforts and financial performance remains inconclusive. This study examines the impact of carbon reduction efforts on the financial performance of Malaysian companies from 2019 to 2023. Using two widely recognized financial performance measures, Return on Assets (ROA) and Tobin’s Q, the study investigates the influence of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) participation on these metrics. The study utilizes panel data analysis on 1087 listed companies and applies multiple regression analysis using the STATA software package. The findings reveal a positive correlation between GHG emissions and ROA and Tobin’s Q, suggesting that companies not actively reducing emissions may still experience short-term financial gains. Conversely, CDP participation negatively impacts both financial indicators, likely due to the increased compliance costs associated with sustainability initiatives. The results underscore the need for a balanced approach that aligns environmental responsibilities with financial performance as Malaysia transitions to a low-carbon economy.
ESG Integration and Financial Performance: Evidence from Malaysia’s Leading Companies Kelvin Lee Yong Ming, Yamunah Vaicondam, Amira Mas Ayu Amir Mustafa, Siti Nurul Munawwarah Roslan, Shen Yi, Komal Chopra, Pooja Khanna International Journal of Energy Economics and Policy, 2024 This study examines the impact of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) scores on the financial performance of the leading publicly listed companies in Malaysia. Using balanced panel data from Bloomberg spanning 2015-2022, the study employs multiple regression analysis (MRA) and the generalized method of moments (GMM) to explore these relationships. The findings reveal a significant positive effect of the overall ESG score on ROA, suggesting that comprehensive ESG practices can enhance financial performance. However, individual environmental (E) and social (S) scores negatively impact ROA at a 10% significance level, indicating potential short-term costs associated with these initiatives. Corporate governance (G) scores, total assets (TA), and total debt to total assets (TDTA) ratios demonstrate a significant adverse effect on ROA. The inclusion of the global reporting initiative (GRI) standard as a control variable also adds robustness to the analysis, highlighting the role of standardized sustainability reporting in evaluating corporate performance. These insights underscore the complex interplay between ESG and companies’ financial performance in Malaysia, emphasizing the importance of considering both the benefits and potential short-term costs associated with ESG initiatives. The findings of this study are crucial for policymakers, corporate managers, and investors, offering guidance on aligning sustainability goals with financial objectives to ensure long-term value creation and risk mitigation. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on ESG practices in emerging markets, highlighting the critical role of sustainability in today’s global business environment.

Towards the development of digital manufacturing ecosystems for sustainable performance: learning from the past two decades of research Abdulrazak F. Shahatha Al-Mashhadani, Muhammad Imran Qureshi, Sanil S. Hishan, Mohd Shamsuri Md Saad, Yamunah Vaicondam, Nohman Khan Energies, 2021 Although the Internet of Things (IoT), advanced manufacturing technologies, and cloud manufacturing contribute to developing a digital manufacturing ecosystem that enhances energy efficiency and resource utilization, manufacturing processes are vulnerable to timely production and delivery. The digital manufacturing systems in Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) minimized the human-technology interactions to foster productivity and material flow. However, there is scarce research to gauge the efficiency of these digital technologies in the entire manufacturing process; also, little is known about the collaborative efforts among countries to achieve sustainable manufacturing performance through the digitalization of the production process. Thus, this systematic review aimed to highlight the effectiveness of the digital manufacturing systems for sustainable product development and the collaborative research on the subject. We selected 52 research articles for this review by following the 2015 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA) statement. The literature classifications were developed using text frequency algorithms in VOSviewer (Centre for Science and Technology Studies, Leiden University, The Netherlands) Results exposed literature from 2005 to 2020 can be categorized into four major research streams: digital transformation, digital manufacturing ecosystem, performance management, and sustainability. The study’s findings revealed that the manufacturing processes are moving towards the IoT, digital devices, and smart factories that are entirely dependent on digital technologies. The digital manufacturing ecosystem is dependent on the availability of digital technologies to all stakeholders. The study concluded that digital technologies are improving manufacturing efficiency and process effectiveness. However, this requires infrastructure that primarily available in developed countries; thus, the digital transformation in underdeveloped regions is deliberate and requires more collaborative research.
Information and Communication Technology-Based Education Planning and Attitude of College Students Yamunah Vaicondam, Sanil S Hishan, Samina Begum, Muhammad Hassan International Journal of Interactive Mobile Technologies, 2021 The ubiquity of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in every school framework in the world has become a trend. With ASEAN integration problems in 2015, can fresh and younger HEI's and their students cope with this trend? The goal of this analysis is to decide the preparedness and role of new HEI students in the field of ICT education. In this study a concise template utilizing a researcher-made questionnaire (α=.971) was used. The research findings show that students at college have a optimistic declaration ('agreement') on ICT use in education (x=3.71; S=.75). This was also shown that sex greatly affects the mindset of students (z=3.91, p=.00), where male attitudes are higher (x=3.91) than female attitudes (x=3.61). Moreover, it demonstrates that preparedness for ICT in general has little to do with the mindset of students towards the usage of ICT in school. Nonetheless, there is a important marginal positive association between ICT access and an attitude of significance to 0.05 (r=.15; p=.002; single-tailed), which suggests that the more a student gets introduced to ICT, the more he develops his attitude to ICT education. It was believed that ICT-based curriculum can be readily adopted and modified for the next several years by complete ICT adoption as the current educational framework. Current and younger HEIs will also spend more in ICT Accessibility and Connectivity to further boost ICT-based awareness and preparedness.
