  • Chemical and mineralogical characterization of historic mortar from the 17th century Franciscan Convent of Ipojuca: contributions toward the reconstruction of the binder:aggregate ratio
Micael Justino, Yeda Viera Póvoas, Valdecir Quarcioni, Raphael Britto
    Revista Materia, 2026

Case Studies in Construction Materials, 2024
High crack occurrences at the masonry-infilled wall partition-reinforced concrete structure interface is a problem that challenges the Brazilian construction process. Improving the mortar’s flexibility is suggested as a potential solution, but it's still not widely known. This paper evaluates industrialized mortar properties modified with four polymers and one plasticizer additive. The research methodology consisted of an experimental investigation related to the mortar properties using styrene-acrylic copolymer (SAE), polyvinyl acetate copolymer (PVAc), styrene-butadiene copolymer (SBR), white glue PVA (polyvinyl acetate), and a sulfated ethoxylated fatty alcohol salt plasticizer additive. The polymers were used in addition to (4%, 5% and 8%) and instead of (4% and 5%) the amount of water established by the manufacturer of the reference mortar, while the amount of additive used was 0.08%. The investigation characterization considered the fresh and hardened conditions, especially, the flexibility evaluation, and tests of elasticity modulus and transverse deformation were carried out, in addition to scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that there was an elasticity modulus reduction of all mixtures compared with the reference mortar without modification. The transverse deformation results range from a minimum of 0.23 mm (SBR) to a maximum of 0.94 mm (SAE). Regarding SEM, the tests with polymers have smoother and less porous surfaces. The mortar flexibility performance with different additive contents is the main contribution of this research.
  • Flaw recognition in reinforced concrete bridges using infrared thermography: A case study
Joaquin Humberto Aquino-Rocha, Yêda Vieira Póvoas, Pedro Igor Bezerra-Batista
    Revista Facultad De Ingenieria, 2024
Infrared thermography is a non-destructive test that is increasingly used in the inspection of existing buildings, bridges, and civil works. However, its practice is limited due to the influence of environmental conditions on the results of the test. The present study aims to evaluate the methodology of the test through the inspection of existing reinforced concrete bridges in Recife, Brazil. This city presents different environmental conditions from those reported in the literature, a high ambient temperature and relative humidity. The study comprises the inspection of five bridges in two days, analyzing their superstructure and infrastructure separately. The results show that flaw recognition is possible through the temperature gradient between imperfect and intact regions. Thus, variation in temperature greater than 0.3 °C allows awareness of the problem. The results behavior is different based on the bridge section inspected. The defects in the bridge superstructure are presented as positive thermal gradients. On the other hand, bridge infrastructure’s deficiencies are shown as negative thermal gradients. Although the technique presents several advantages for the inspection, the results must be analyzed in detail to avoid false detections, which may compromise the correct diagnosis of the bridge structures.

    Materiales De Construccion, 2023
This work aims to obtain parameters of thermal performance of various types of plaster blocks for vertical sealing. The methodology consisted of making test elements with 8 types of plaster blocks, in addition to plasterboard of different densities. Thermal resistance, transmittance, capacity, and delay were calculated, according to the Brazilian standard NBR 15220. Thermal behavior tests were carried out with controlled heating through a heat source, digital thermometer, infrared thermography, and an instrumented thermal chamber developed for this work. The experimental results corroborated with the trend indicated by the calculated parameters. The massive and hollow blocks of 100 mm had the best results followed by the 76 mm hollow blocks. The 50- and 70-mm massive blocks were among those with the worst thermal behavior. The study through the thermal chamber and real test elements associated with the normative methods allowed the practical verification regarding the thermal behavior of the components.
