Cultivating sustainable architecture and built environments through cross-cultural education Madhavi P. Patil, Yasser Osman Moharam Mahgoub, Ashraf M. Salama, Zeinab Tahoun, Lorraine Johnston, et al. Smart and Sustainable Built Environment, 2025 PurposeThis paper examines the thrust, process and implementation of TNE programmes, using the TRANSABE-EDU collaborative project as a case study in architecture and built environment (ABE) postgraduate education. The project seeks to develop transdisciplinary, transnational education (TNE) programmes in ABE by integrating the educational strengths and cultural insights of British and Egyptian institutions.Design/methodology/approachThis study employs a comprehensive methodology, integrating systematic literature reviews, stakeholder engagement, benchmarking analyses and content analysis to develop a framework for transdisciplinary TNE programmes. Data were gathered using bibliometric tools, qualitative content analysis and stakeholder workshops in Egypt and the UK.FindingsThe study identifies critical gaps, including the lack of interdisciplinary approaches and limited integration of emerging technologies. It highlights key opportunities for enhancing collaboration through TNE programmes, such as developing joint degree offerings, embedding sustainability throughout curricula and harnessing digital platforms for collaborative learning.Research limitations/implicationsAs an insightful case study for the British Council, the TRANSABE-EDU project demonstrates practical methods for conceptualising and administering TNE programmes. The outcomes would set benchmarks for establishing transdisciplinary courses in ABE, elevating future TNE initiatives’ quality and long-term viability. The empirical validation of the curriculum is outside the scope of this paper and will be independently conducted, with results to be presented in a subsequent paper.Practical implicationsThe practical implications of this study address diverse beneficiaries. Academic administrators and policymakers should prioritise investment in state-of-the-art learning management systems that support hybrid, flexible teaching methods tailored to diverse international student bodies. Institutions should implement continuous professional development programmes placing emphasis on enhancing digital literacy, cross-cultural communication and transdisciplinary teaching practices. Coordinated policy efforts, such as establishing global accreditation standards for TNE provisions and streamlining administrative processes, are crucial to sustain and expand high-quality TNE programmes.Originality/valueThis research connects cross-cultural collaboration with transdisciplinary approaches in ABE education. It offers a pioneering framework for TNE programmes that prioritise sustainability, cultural relevance and innovative pedagogical techniques.
Assessing the Efficacy of Spatial Planning and Architecture in New Cities: A Case Study of Galala City and Its Implications for Responsible Urban Development Y Mahgoub Iop Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science, 2024 This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies used in the planning and construction of new responsible cities and to determine whether or not the stated objectives are being met. As a case study, Galala City provided insights into the efficacy of implementing the principles of responsible cities and served as a reference for similar projects. The evaluation encompassed an examination of diverse elements, including social, economic, and environmental considerations, in order to ascertain the degree to which the theory has been effectively implemented and its influence on both the city and its inhabitants. The research findings indicated that a critical first move in the development of new cities should involve the establishment of robust governance structures and institutions. It is essential to provide a variety of housing choices to accommodate different economic groups, promoting inclusiveness. Additionally, addressing the housing, commercial, and recreational requirements of low-skilled workers throughout the construction and post-construction phases is vital. Emphasizing the creation of employment opportunities and business prospects emerges as a fundamental principle for drawing and retaining permanent residents. Examining how well the Responsible Cities theory works in practice, using Galala City as a case study, has the potential to enhance the field of urban planning and architecture. This, in turn, can promote the creation of cities worldwide that are not only more sustainable but also more inclusive.

Project based learning for urban design education: Resilient cities under rapid urban change, the case of Doha, Qatar Yasser Mahgoub Proceedings of 2015 International Conference on Interactive Collaborative Learning Icl 2015, 2015 This paper presents the educational outcomes of a Project-Based-Learning (PBL) approach as applied in urban design education by graduate students at the Master of Urban Planning and Design program, Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, College of Engineering, Qatar University. PBL approach has always proved effective in teaching and learning in engineering, architecture and urban design programs. It engages learners, teachers and community in investigating and designing real life, community based projects. Doha, the capital of Qatar, is experiencing rapid urban change since the second half of the 20th century. This rapid urbanization has resulted in the remarkable transformation of its urban environment and the disappearance of traditional neighborhoods, that were replaced by modern mega real-estate developments, public buildings and infrastructure projects. Currently mega development projects are introducing new infrastructure projects; roads and metro, that are expected to impact the city in an unprecedented way. Mega infrastructure projects provide ample opportunity to reduce car dependency and provide pedestrian walkways and cycling lanes. Underground metro stations provide public transportation access to the city downtown that require urban transformation and changes. The students of Urban Planning Legislations course at the Master of Urban Planning and Design program were introduced to the following questions: What is the expected impact of these mega infrastructure projects on the city, especially the city center? What urban design strategies and legislations are needed to achieve maximum benefit from this vast investment? And finally, what types of urban design projects are needed to achieve these goals? The students were required to propose urban design projects that address these concerns. The projects proposed revitalization of a traditional neighborhood and three urban corridors to be developed in the city downtown benefiting from the construction of mega underground metro stations.
