Yosbanys Roque Herrera, Santiago Alonso García, Anabela del Rosario Criollo Criollo, Juan Antonio López Núñez
    Behavioral Sciences, 2026
The overuse of social media is a multidimensional phenomenon with the capacity to influence the academic environment. Thus, this study aimed to establish the relationship between social media addiction and academic engagement in university students. The research employed a quantitative approach, a non-experimental design, a correlational scope, and a cross-sectional analysis. The population comprised 1200 students (65.3% female) with an average age of 21.4 years from the Faculty of Health Sciences at the National University of Chimborazo, in Riobamba, Ecuador, during the first academic term of 2023. Data were collected using the Utrecht Academic Engagement Scale and the Social Media Addiction Questionnaire. A total of 95.8% of participants had sufficient academic engagement, and 93.7% had a medium level of social media addiction. There was a statistically significant (p < 0.01) negative correlation between the variables of academic engagement and social media addiction (including their respective dimensions), with a mild-to-moderate intensity, as indicated by Pearson r values ranging from −0.101 to −0.297. Significant associations were found between the social media used by participants and their connection frequency, and significant associations were also found between their primary use of social media and the main reason perceived by participants for controlling their use.

    Social Sciences, 2026
Social media is a valuable resource in many spheres of life in the 21st century; however, excessive, uncontrolled use is associated with various adverse health conditions. In this study, we used a quantitative approach, an observational design, and a comparative scope to compare levels of academic commitment and social media addiction, and their respective dimensions, grouping participants according to various sociodemographic and educational criteria. A total of participants was 1200 students (65.3% female) with an average age of 21.4 years, from the Faculty of Health Sciences at the National University of Chimborazo, Ecuador, and data were collected using the Ultrecht Academic Commitment Scale and Social Media Addiction Questionnaire. When grouped by major, statistically significant differences were found only for dedication (p = 0.038), lack of control over social media use (p = 0.016), and excessive social media use (p = 0.002). When grouped by social media use, there were statistically significant differences in all the dependent variables, with p-values ranging from 0.000 to 0.011. Regarding the frequency of social media use, no significant differences were found in academic engagement (p ≥ 0.05), while the opposite was observed for social media use. A comparative analysis identified categories with significant differences. The results enabling an accurate diagnosis and the adoption of the most appropriate educational strategies; also serves as a theoretical and methodological basis for further research on the subject.
  • Predictive Capacity of Social Media Addiction on Academic Engagement in University Students
Yosbanys Roque Herrera, Santiago Alonso-García, Dennys Vladimir Tenelanda López, Juan Antonio López Núñez
    Education Sciences, 2025
Social media is an essential part of people’s lives worldwide. This study aimed to analyze the predictive capacity of social media addiction on academic engagement among students enrolled in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the National University of Chimborazo during the first academic period of 2023. The Social Media Addiction Questionnaire (ARS) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-S-17) were applied to 1200 participants during an analytical study. According to the simple linear regression model, 11.2% of the variance in academic engagement levels was explained by social media addiction, with statistical significance (p < 0.05). The multiple linear regression model was significant, although it showed a low capacity to explain and predict the level of academic engagement, considering the dimensions of the level of addiction to social media (obsession, lack of control, and excessive use). The ROC curve parameters showed statistical significance, showing a moderate ability to discriminate insufficient academic commitment. The results serve as a basis for future studies and as a diagnostic basis for establishing policies and strategies in the institution where the research was conducted to increase academic engagement and reduce social media addiction.

Revista Interuniversitaria De Formacion Del Profesorado, 2025

The aim of the present study was to analyze the reasons for practicing PA among university students in the Ecuadorian context, determine the differences according to sex and work-study compatibility, establish the association between the reasons for practicing PA, and estimate the predictive value of sex, age, and work-study compatibility on the reasons for practicing PA. The sample consisted of 1412 university students (21.2 ± 3.5 years), 513 men (36.3%) and 899 women (63.7%). The instrument used for data collection was the Goals in Exercise Content Questionnaire. The Mann-Whitney U test, Spearman's correlation coefficient and a linear regression analysis were used to analyze the results. The main findings show that there are statistically significant differences between men and women in the reasons of social affiliation, health direction, social recognition and skill development. Also, statistical differences are observed between women who do or do not combine study and work in the reasons of social affiliation, social recognition and skill development. On the other hand, the main motivation for PA is health, while the motive that least encourages the practice of PA is social recognition. Finally, in the regression analysis, sex presented a significant predictive value in the motives analyzed. Therefore, the interests of Ecuadorian students are revealed, and key information is obtained to improve and increase the levels and adherence to PA in order to contribute to a more physically active life in the university population. • Comparison of digital research skills between Spain and Ecuador
Victoria-Maldonado, Juan José, Roque-Herrera, Yosbanys, Berral-Ortiz, Blanca, Sarmiento-Benavides, Alejandra Salomé
Journal of E Learning and Knowledge Society, 2024
The idea of the university as a mere transmitter of knowledge has long been obsolete. In the context of educational research and innovation, it is university teachers who fulfill these roles. This shift, along with the technological advancements of the 21st century, highlights the need for a thorough investigation into how well university teachers are equipped to face these new challenges. Consequently, various tools have been developed to provide a research framework that allows for comparisons between countries. Tools such as DigCompEdu have been used to assess teachers' digital competencies and to facilitate cross-country comparisons. However, this study does not focus on teaching competencies but rather on exploring research competencies related to ICTs. In this context, a comparison is made between Spain and Ecuador to examine how two institutions from different countries operate, as well as how they function in relation to gender and the stage of academic career development. This aims to identify aspects that can serve as distinguishing factors. The results show that there are no significant differences in the comparison of researchers from the two universities, finding significant changes only for specific aspects, establishing as differentiating factors the idea of a greater intention to use ICT for research by researchers at the University of Granada and showing how during the training of university teachers, confidence is acquired to train new researchers, establishing the ideal time for training once they have more than 10 years of research and with a permanent university link.
