Shrinkage behaviour of self-compacting concrete with higher binder content: experimental results and predictive equation Yuvaraj Bhirud, Om Vaidya, Satish More, Ayub Shaikh, Amol Pawar, et al. Discover Materials, 2025 The present study explores the potential benefits of increasing binder content in self-compacting concrete (SCC). Three concrete mixtures with varying binder content (550, 600, and 650 kg/m3) were investigated to evaluate their workability, compressive strength, and shrinkage. Findings indicate a significant enhancement in strength over the concrete's lifespan with higher binder content, accompanied by improved stability and cohesion. Additionally, the study examines the economic advantages of utilizing fly ash as a partial binder replacement, thereby reducing reliance on costly superplasticizers. However, existing prediction models for concrete shrinkage (IS 1343-2012, BS EN 1992-1-1-2004, and ACI 209 R-92) proved inadequate for high-binder SCC. To bridge this knowledge gap, a novel equation for predicting shrinkage in SCC with increased binder content was developed based on experimental data. This research contributes to the optimized design and cost-effective application of high-strength SCC in the construction industry.
Need and Awareness of Leakages and waterproofing in High rise Building Bhagyashree Khartode, Shariq Sulaiman, Manisha Shewale, Yuvaraj L. Bhirud E3s Web of Conferences, 2024 Identification of leakage sources is itself a perplexing process and needs expert views from experienced work and trade specific professionals. Comprehensive strategies relevant to work methodologies are to be implemented that prioritises durability and efficacy of waterproofing system. Leakages when identified at final stages of building handovers induces a high cost in repair and maintenance of defects pertaining to waterproofing failures or due to non-consideration of leakage prevention measures at the design and specification establishment stages. Despite of a thorough technical knowledge even seasoned civil engineering professionals and even waterproofing specialists are not aware of the probable root causes of observed leakages. Various factors contributing to leakages through different areas of buildings are mentioned along with preventive measures in relation to process enhancement, workmanship, materials, etc. in relation to prevention of leakages. Photographic examples of different types of leakages are provided for an easy understanding of non-technical users regarding the kind of defect being discussed. This study represents a comprehensive review of different types of leakages observed in buildings and their root causes. Solutions based on type of leakage along with the specific materials and method orientation for the relevant leakages is also covered in the study. Waterproofing is an essential aspect and integral part of building construction which ensures the durability, longevity, and structural integrity of buildings. Proper waterproofing safeguards the structure from observable and non-observable damages such as internal or external structural disintegration, Waterproofing although being a complicated activity, is highly generalized in terms of materials to be used. This research explores the different types of materials and their required specifications to be used or not to be used at a particular location in buildings along with listed reasons.
Effects of cementitious ingredients on long term properties of self compacting concrete Yuvaraj L. BHIRUD Sigma Journal of Engineering and Natural Sciences, 2024 The paper “Properties of Self-Compacting Concrete with High Volume of Cementitious Material” investigates the impact of higher binder content on the properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC). The study was conducted using three SCC mixes with binding materials of 550 kg/m 3 , 600 kg/m 3 , and 650 kg/m 3 with a constant water-to-binder ratio and 40% of the binder being fly ash. The properties of the concrete were evaluated in the fresh stage using tests like the slump flow test and V-funnel test and in the hardened stage using tests like the compressive strength test and shrinkage test. The results showed that while there was a correlation between higher binder content and higher compressive strength, there were also differences in shrinkage and creep values that were estimated using ACI 209 R-92 and BS EN 1992-1-1-2004. The study highlights the need to investigate the effects of high binder content on SCC properties.
